Intra-household bargaining in a democratic South Africa

    No full text
Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 33-35).Adding to the literature on intra-household bargaining in South Africa, this paper builds on the results obtained by Maitra and Ray (2003). They find that it matters who receives the income within the household as to how it is spent. This conclusion leads to a rejection of the unitary household model punted by case and Deaton (1998). This paper is in essence a replication study of Maitra and Ray's (2003) model and seeks to examine whether post-democracy 2006 data holds the same model of the household found in 1993. Thereafter, some sensible extensions are made to further analyse if differences can be found in spending behaviour of members of the same household

Measuring Social Preferences in Developing Economies

    No full text
Social preferences have played an increasingly important role in understanding economic development over the past two decades. Building on these developments, this chapter offers a guide to researchers measuring social preferences especially but not exclusively in developing economies. It discusses common measures of social preferences, ranging from incentivized behavioral games, to unincentivized survey methods, and a range of innovative methods. We discuss practical measurement issues, document links between different measures and real life behavior. We conclude by discussing applications ranging from group identity, conflict, stability of preferences, the role of social pressure, and networks. Finally, we outline the path forward in deepening our understanding of complexities of social preferences and their relevance for economic development

SynMRI: An R Package for Synthetic Magnetic Resonance Imaging

    No full text
Synthetic magnetic resonance (MR) imaging refers to the procedure used to predict magnetic resonance images for any given design parameter settings using at least three observed MRI scans. SynMRI is an R packaged we developed for this purpose. We implemented the method proposed in Maitra and Riddles (2010), which used a model based on the Bloch equation, an empirical expression describing the nuclear magnetic resonance phenomena, to get voxel-wise estimates that are used to predict the intensity values for a given design parameters settings. The noise on the MR signal is modeled using the Rice distribution. All the parameters involved are estimated using the EM algorithm. SynMRI includes functions the compute the estimates, and visualize and evaluate the results. The EM algorithm estimation stage is performed in C since it is the part most compute intensive.</p

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Parental education and child health: Evidence from China

    No full text
This paper examines the effect of parental, household and community character-istics on the health of children in China. We find that birth order, death of elder siblings, use of prenatal care and alcohol consumption by the mother when pregnant have statistically significant effects on the health of children. Although parental education does not have a significant direct effect on child health, it does affect mothers’ behavior during pregnancy and inflfluences the use of health inputs, indirectly impacting the health of children. The research findings have important implications for both family planning programs and broader social policies in China.Pushkar Maitra, Xiujian Peng, Yaer Zhuan

CatSIM: A Categorical Image Similarity Metric

    No full text
We introduce CatSIM, a new similarity metric for binary and multinary two- and three-dimensional images and volumes. CatSIM uses a structural similarity image quality paradigm and is robust to small perturbations in location so that structures in similar, but not entirely overlapping, regions of two images are rated higher than using simple matching. The metric can also compare arbitrary regions inside images. CatSIM is evaluated on artificial data sets, image quality assessment surveys and two imaging applicationsThis is a pre-print of the article Thompson, Geoffrey Z., and Ranjan Maitra. Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
