    The Gertrud Mainzer Family Collection documents the personal and professional life of Holocaust survivor, attorney, and New York Family Court judge Gertrud Mainzer. It also includes materials about her family and her ancestors, including her husband, attorney Richard Mainzer, and her father, noted legal scholar Hugo Sinzheimer.The Hermann E. Simon Collection, AR 6372; Box 3; Folder 25, contains a memoir by Gertrud Mainzer, describing her life in hiding in Holland and subsequent time in the concentration camp at Bergen-Belsen. Also included (Box 3; Folder 26) are legal documents and correspondence by Gertrud Mainzer.See also the Hugo Sinzheimer Collection, AR 25413Gertrud (Traute) Mainzer née Sinzheimer (1914-2010) was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany to noted legal scholar Hugo Daniel Sinzheimer and Paula née Seelig. Her family moved to Holland after Hitler came to power in 1933. In Holland, she married Richard Mainzer (1907-1966), an attorney and a student of her father. After the Nazi invasion her husband managed to flee to Cuba, but Gertrud and her two small children went into hiding. In 1944 she and her children were found and interned in the Westerbork camp and later the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp (where she met Anne Frank and her sister Margot). After the war she joined her husband in Cuba, and in 1948 the family moved to New York, where they had a third child.Mainzer worked as a librarian for Finch College in the 1950s, but once her children were grown she returned to school to study law (NYU, 1966) and then entered private practice. From 1979 to 1984, she was a Family Court Judge in New York City.     The Otto Mainzer collection documents the life and professional activities of Otto Mainzer, lawyer, writer, and financial consultant; the collection also sheds light on the life of Otto Mainzer’s wife, Ilse Wunsch, a musician and a teacher. The collection includes correspondence, financial, vital, immigration, and legal documents, notes, photographs, printed materials, and writings, by Otto Mainzer and Ilse Wunsch as well as a small number of manuscripts by other authors. The collection is divided into two distinct sections, one pertaining to Otto Mainzer and the other to Ilse Wunsch.Otto Mainzer, lawyer, writer, and a financial consultant was born in 1903 in Frankfurt am Main. He received his basic schooling in Frankfurt am Main and continued his education at Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin universities, studying jurisprudence. After receiving his degree Otto Mainzer worked as a lawyer at the Berlin Court of Appeals. He immigrated to Paris in 1933 where he devoted his time to writing. It was in Paris that he began working on his monumental work of non-fiction, Die sexuelle Zwangswirtschaft: ein erotisches Manifest, which he eventually managed to publish in 1981. In the mid-thirties Otto Mainzer published one volume of poems entitled, Der zaertliche Vorstoss: in sechsundsechzig Gedichten. During the same period he wrote his first novel, Prometheus. He had to wait for forty years before it was published by Stroemfeld/Roter Stern in 1989. After the outbreak of World War II in 1939 Otto Mainzer was interned at a French concentration camp for over a year before being allowed to leave. He arrived in New York in late 1941. Shortly after his arrival, Otto Mainzer moved to Chicago to work as a graphologist for the Spiegel of Chicago. It was in Chicago that he met his future wife, Ilse Wunsch. Soon after Otto Mainzer and Ilse Wunsch moved back to New York. Otto Mainzer devoted the rest of his life to writing and propagating his ideas of human love and sexuality as an underlying stratum for all of the human interactions. The bulk of Otto Mainzer’s written legacy was never published. He died in New York in 1995.Ilse Wunsch was born in 1911 in Berlin, Germany. She started studying piano at a very early age. After graduating from high school, Ilse Wunsch continued her studies at the Teachers Training College. In 1936 she left for Japan, for concertizing and teaching. She eventually moved to Chicago where she continued her studies at the Chicago Musical College, in due course earning a Master of Music degree. After meeting Otto Mainzer, the couple moved to New York, where Ilse resumed her post graduate studies. In New York, Ilse Wunsch was a member of the faculty of the New York College of Music, Stern College for Women, teaching piano and theory. Later she became an Assistant Professor at New York University, School of Education, Music Education Division.     Die biostratigraphische Aussagekraft organischwandiger Dinoflagella- tenzysten in Rupel-Sedimenten (Unter-Oligozän) des Mainzer Beckens wird anhand von Material aus fünf Kernbohrungen aus verschiedenen Ablagerungsräumen untersucht. Die Abfolge vom oberen Foraminiferenmergel bis in den unteren Schleichsand lässt sich durch das Aussetzen von Wetzeliella gochtii, Rhombodinium draco, Phtanoperidinium amomum, P. comatum, W. symmetrica und Enneadocysta pectiniformis in vier Abschnitte gliedern. Ein Vergleich mit Dinoflagellatenzysten-Zonierungen für den nordwesteuropäischen Raum ergibt die größten Übereinstimmungen mit der Zonierung von Köthe (1990). Dies weist auf eine enge paläozeanographische Verbindung zwischen dem Mainzer Becken und dem nordwestdeutschen Tertiärbecken zur Zeit des Rupels hin.Abstract: The biostratigraphic significance of organic-walled dinoflagellate cysts from Rupelian (Lower Oligocene) sediments of the Mainz Basin (Southwest Germany) is investigated. The study material is derived from five boreholes drilled in different depo- sitional environments. The investigated succession can be subdivided into four intervals based on the last appearance data of Wetzeliella gochtii, Rhombodinium draco, Phtanope- ridinium amomum, P. comatum, W. symmetrica, and Enneadocysta pectiniformis. A comparison of dinoflagellate cyst ranges in the Mainz Basin with zonations from the Northwest European Tertiary Basin yields highest agreement with the zonation of Köthe (1990) which has been established for northern Germany. This indicates a close palae- oceanographic connection between the Mainz Basin and the Northwest European Tertiary Basin during Rupelian times.researc

    Biostratigraphie, Paläogeographie und Paläoökologie des Fischschiefers (Mittlerer Rupelton/Mitteloligozän) im Mainzer Becken

    Anhand von ausgesuchten Bohrungen zweier repräsentativer Gebiete im Mainzer Becken wurde der Fischschiefer biostratigraphisch untersucht. Die Gesamtfauna und die Artenzahl der Foraminiferenfauna läßt eine Zweiteilung in einen unteren faunenreichen und einen oberen faunenarmen Bereich zu. Durch eine detaillierte Untersuchung der Foraminiferenfauna können beide Bereiche nochmals dreigeteilt werden. Der untere faunenreiche Bereich läßt sich in einen unteren Horizont mit Spiroplectinella deperdita (D’OrsıcnYy 1846) und Palmula? obliqgua (Rormer 1838), einen mittleren Horizont mit Bolivina beyrichi Reuss 1851 und Nodosaria ewaldi Reuss 1851 sowie in einen oberen Horizont mit Durchläuferforaminiferen gliedern. Der obere faunenarme Bereich wird etwa in der Mitte durch einen geringmächtigen Zwischenhorizont mit typischen Durchläuferforaminiferen dreigeteilt. Der gesamte obere Bereich ist durch das Auftreten von Bathysiphon taurinensis Sacco 1893 gekennzeichnet. Aussagen zum Milieu des Fischschiefermeeres im Mainzer Becken schließen sich diesen Untersuchungen an. Der Sauerstoffgehalt war zumindest zeitweise in den unteren Wasserschichten gering. Die Salinitätwar normal marin. Vergleiche mit der Randfazies, dem Unteren Meeressand, lassen im Bereich Eckelsheim auf eine Wassertiefe von etwa IIO m bzw. auf eine Zonierung vergleichbar dem äußeren Schelf schließen. Für diese tertiäre Buchtbei Eckelsheim werden die paläogeographischen Zusammenhänge kurz dargestellt.Abstract: Based on six specially chosen drillings in two different areas in the Mainz Basin the Fischschiefer has been biostratigraphically explored. The whole fauna and the richness of the species regarding foraminifers show a bisection in a lower part with many species and a higher part with only a few of them. After detailed examination of the foraminfers fauna, the existence of three horizons of each part can be assumed. The lower part is subdivided in a lower horizon with Spiroplectinella deperdita (D’ORBIGNY 1846) and Palmula? obliqua (ROEMER 1838), a middle horizon with Bolivina beyrichi REUSS 1851 and Nodosaria ewaldi REUSS 1851 and in an upper horizon with longrange foraminifers. The whole upper part is subdivided in the middle by a minor horizon with longrange foraminifers. The whole upper part is marked by the appearance of Bathysiphon taurinensis SACCO 1893. These examinations are completed by reports in the fields of palaeoecology and palaeogeography concerning the Fischschiefer-sea in this area. In different times the concentration of oxygen in the lower water layers was very restricted. The salinity was normal. The comparison with the beach facies of the Lower Meeressand in the area of Eckelsheim shows seadepth of about 110 m, which is also comparable to the outer shelf.     Saldino-Mainzer syndrome is part of a group disorders, the conorenal syndromes, that are characterized by cone-shaped epiphyses with chronic renal disease in childhood and are variously associated with retinitis pigmentosa, cerebral ataxia, and/or abnormalities of the proximal epiphyses and femur metaphyses. Saldino-Mainzer syndrome usually has sporadic presentation. The present report shows the unusual findings of a 23-year-old woman, affected by the Saldino-Mainzer syndrome and has undergone kidney transplantation, highlights the possible association with maxillofacial and cephalometric abnormalities
