Sperimentazione della sedia da parto nella Clinica Ostetrica di Parma
Abstract: We have carried out the experiment about the use of "obstetric chairs" on 31 women in labour. There were no obstetric complications for any woman. In all cases the delivery was spontaneous and the patients appreciated the new of delivery very much. The fetus did not show any complication either during the labour or during the alter-birth period. All cases showed a high Apgar - score. The fetal heart rate monitoring didn't record any FHR changes. The midwives didn't point out any difficulty about the delivery management. These results encourage, to continue this experience
Non-Myopic Multifidelity Method for Multi-regime Constrained Aerodynamic Optimization
The exploration and trade-off analysis of different aerodynamic design configurations requires solving optimization problems. The major bottleneck to asses the optimal design is the large number of time-consuming evaluations of high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models, necessary to capture the non-linear phenomena and discontinuities that occurs at higher Mach number regimes. To address this limitation, we propose an original non-myopic multifidelity Bayesian framework aimed at including expensive high-fidelity CFD simulations for the optimization of the aerodynamic design. Our scheme comes with a two-step lookahead policy to maximize the improvement of the solution quality considering the rewards of future steps, and an active learning scheme informed by the fluid dynamic regime and the information extracted from data, to wisely select the aerodynamic model to interrogate. We validate the proposed algorithm for the case of a constrained drag coefficient optimization problem of a NACA 0012 airfoil, and compare the results to other popular multifidelity and single-fidelity optimization frameworks. The results suggest that our strategy outperforms the other approaches, allowing to significantly reduce the drag coefficient through a principled selection of limited evaluations of the high-fidelity CFD model
Physics-aware multifidelity Bayesian optimization: A generalized formulation
The adoption of high-fidelity models for many-query optimization problems is majorly limited by the significant computational cost required for their evaluation at every query. Multifidelity Bayesian methods (MFBO) allow to include costly high-fidelity responses for a sub-selection of queries only, and use fast lower-fidelity models to accelerate the optimization process. State-of-the-art methods rely on a purely data-driven search and do not include explicit information about the physical context. This paper acknowledges that prior knowledge about the physical domains of engineering problems can be leveraged to accelerate these data-driven searches, and proposes a generalized formulation for MFBO to embed a form of domain awareness during the optimization procedure. In particular, we formalize a bias as a multifidelity acquisition function that captures the physical structure of the domain. This permits to partially alleviate the data-driven search from learning the domain properties on-the-fly, and sensitively enhances the management of multiple sources of information. The method allows to efficiently include high-fidelity simulations to guide the optimization search while containing the overall computational expense. Our physics-aware multifidelity Bayesian optimization is presented and illustrated for two classes of optimization problems frequently met in science and engineering, namely design optimization and health monitoring problems
Surrogate modeling approach to support real-time structural assessment and decision making
Learning for predictions: Real-time reliability assessment of aerospace systems
Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) aim to predict the Remaining Useful Life (RUL) of a system and to allow a timely planning of replacement of components, limiting the need for corrective maintenance and the down time of equipment. A major challenge in system prognostics is the availability of accurate physics based representations of the grow rate of faults. Additionally, the analysis of data acquired during flight operations is traditionally time consuming and expensive. This work proposes a computational method to overcome these limitations through the dynamic adaptation of the state-space model of fault propagation to on-board observations of system’s health. Our approach aims at enabling real-time assessment of systems health and reliability through fast predictions of the Remaining Useful Life that account for uncertainty. The strategy combines physics-based knowledge of the system damage propagation rate, machine learning and real-time measurements of the health status to obtain an accurate estimate of the RUL of aerospace systems. The RUL prediction algorithm relies on a dynamical estimator filter, which allows to deal with nonlinear systems affected by uncertainties with unknown distribution. The proposed method integrates a dynamical model of the fault propagation, accounting for the current and past measured health conditions, the past time history of the operating conditions (such as input command, load, temperature, etc.), and the expected future operating conditions. The model leverages the knowledge collected through the record of past fault measurements, and dynamically adapts the prediction of the damage propagation by learning from the observed time history. The original method is demonstrated for the RUL prediction of an electromechanical actuator for aircraft flight controls. We observe that the strategy allows to refine rapid predictions of the RUL in fractions of seconds by progressively learning from on-board acquisitions
Resource aware multifidelity active learning for efficient optimization
Traditional methods for black box optimization require a considerable number of evaluations of the objective function. This can be time consuming, impractical, and unfeasible for many applications in aerospace science and engineering, which rely on accurate representations and expensive models to evaluate. Bayesian Optimization (BO) methods search for the global optimum by progressively (actively) learning a surrogate model of the objective function along the search path. Bayesian optimization can be accelerated through multifidelity approaches which leverage multiple black-box approximations of the objective functions that are computationally cheaper to evaluate, but still provide relevant information to the search task. Further computational benefits are offered by the availability of parallel and distributed computing architectures whose optimal usage is an open opportunity within the context of active learning. This paper introduces the Resource Aware Active Learning (RAAL) algorithm, a multifidelity Bayesian scheme to accelerate the optimization of black box functions. At each optimization step, the RAAL procedure computes the set of best sample locations and the associated fidelity sources that maximize the information gain to acquire during the parallel/distributed evaluation of the objective function, while accounting for the limited computational budget. The scheme is demonstrated for a variety of benchmark problems and results are discussed for both single fidelity and multifidelity settings. In particular, we observe that the RAAL strategy optimally seeds multiple points at each iteration, which allows for a major speed up of the optimization task
Projection-based model reduction: Formulations for physics-based machine learning
This paper considers the creation of parametric surrogate models for applications in science and engineering where the goal is to predict high-dimensional output quantities of interest, such as pressure, temperature and strain fields. The proposed methodology develops a low-dimensional parametrization of these quantities of interest using the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), and combines this parametrization with machine learning methods to learn the map between the input parameters and the POD expansion coefficients. The use of particular solutions in the POD expansion provides a way to embed physical constraints, such as boundary conditions and other features of the solution that must be preserved. The relative costs and effectiveness of four different machine learning techniques—neural networks, multivariate polynomial regression, k-nearest-neighbors and decision trees—are explored through two engineering examples. The first example considers prediction of the pressure field around an airfoil, while the second considers prediction of the strain field over a damaged composite panel. The case studies demonstrate the importance of embedding physical constraints within learned models, and also highlight the important point that the amount of model training data available in an engineering setting is often much less than it is in other machine learning applications, making it essential to incorporate knowledge from physical models
