    Barbie, the doll-symbol, the pop culture icon and significant prop on the artistic, political, social and business scenes, has been arousing emotions in subsequent generations for several decades. It is worth noting, however, that today Barbie is no longer just a passive instrument illustrating desired ideas, but has become a factor creating reality independent of her creators. In the present discussion, the author focuses on the interpretation of the phenomenon of Barbie perceived as an object and a thing in the sense of the Italian philosopher Remo Bodei. The article attempts to trace the transformation of the image of the Barbie doll from its creation to modern times, when its popularity peaked thanks to the excellent marketing strategy accompanying the distribution of Greta Gerwing’s 2023 film Barbie

    Analysis of Barbie Dolls’ Low Sales Volume in China

    Barbie dolls are popular in many countries, and this toy brand has made a lot of profits for Mattel, the world’s largest toy company that owns a large number of well-known toy brands including Barbie. The USA is the largest market for Barbie dolls, and the sales of Barbie dolls in the USA market account for 56.52% of the total. However, in China, Barbie dolls’ sales volume does not live up to expectations. In this paper, by using Hofstede’s five dimensions, the author analyzed the cultural differences between China and the USA, which indicates that the cultural diversity between China and the USA, such as power distance and individualism/collectivism, can influence Barbie dolls’ sales volume. Based on this analysis, the author suggested that Mattel should change its strategies in localization and advertising, so as to improve the sales volume of Barbie dolls in China’s market

    Masculinity is the characteristics that are traditionally thought to be typical of or suitable for men. This research attempts to discuss a character\u27s masculinity in The Barbie 2023 Film. To specify the research, the researcher divided this analysis into two research questions, they are: 1) What are the elements of masculinity depicted in The 2023 Barbie Film? 2) How is the depiction of stereotypical masculinity in The 2023 Barbie Film? Masculinity in Barbie 2023 is very interesting to discuss because it can be identified from various elements contained in the film, in this case the identification of masculinity can be seen from how the characters in this film behave, the instrinsic elements implied in the film, the setting, and also other things that illustrate how the elements of masculinity are contained in the film. The results of this study found two findings, namely the first is what elements of masculinity are found in this film in the form of how the character Ken has an athletic posture that strongly shows elements of masculinity and in several scenes in the film shows masculinity, then the findings of other stereotypes of masculinity that the author managed to identify from the dialog, character acting, setting, or atmosphere that is contained in this film

    W artykule autorka analizuje język filmowych postaci – Barbie i Kena – w filmie Barbie w reż. Grety Gerwig. Analizie poddaje polską wersję językową (dubbing). Autorka przyjmuje, że język wypowiedzi filmowych postaci jest jednym z elementów tworzących ich stereotyp. W przypadku Barbie i Kena jest to istotne, ponieważ obie postaci są ikonami kultury i mają swój stereotypowy wizerunek znany w wielu kulturach. Jednocześnie są przedstawicielami określonej grupy kobiet i mężczyzn, dlatego też można analizowane wypowiedzi rozpatrywać jako biolekt (wariant języka uzależniony od płci) oraz socjolekt (wariant języka charakterystyczny dla określonej grupy społecznej). Ponieważ wypowiedzi Barbie i Kena są przerysowane, należy patrzeć na nie jak na stylizację. Zostawiają one też szerokie pole do interpretacji. Film może być bowiem uważany za ośmieszenie ruchu feministycznego, jak i ośmieszenie porządku opartego na dominacji mężczyzn. Może też być traktowany jako głos kobiet, a także mężczyzn w walce o równe prawa.The article investigates the language used by the movie characters Barbie and Ken in the film Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig. The Polish dubbing version is the subject of analysis. The author posits that the language of film characters is a contributing factor in the formation of their respective stereotypes. In the case of Barbie and Ken, this is significant, since both characters are cultural icons, and their stereotypical image is well-known in many cultures. Consequently, they can be regarded as exemplifying a specific gender and social group, and the utterances in question can be viewed as a gender-dependent variant of language and a variant of language characteristic of one particular social group. Given the exaggerated nature of Barbie and Ken’s utterances, it is necessary to consider them as stylised. Furthermore, they leave considerable scope for interpretation. It could be argued that the film is a satire of the feminist movement and an indictment of an order based on male domination. Alternatively, it could be seen as a representation of the voices of women and men in the struggle for equal rights

    Queer Coding of Barbie Movies: Mattel's Attempt at Saving Barbie's Image.

    This thesis is a combination of queer analysis of selected Barbie movies done by the author, with the support of the relevant academic literature, and queer readings of those same movies done by people online. The text starts with an introduction, which gives the reader an overview of the subject and introduces the main research question: "Why does Barbie seem queer in the movies?" Then the thesis discusses the relevant theoretical literature and methods used in the study in the literature review and methodology sections respectively, which includes theories such as feminist and queer theory, but also touching on postfeminism and girl power. Further, the main portion of the study is the analysis, preceded by a preface, which consists of seven chapters, each one focusing on a separate movie. Lastly, all of the results of this study are explained in conclusion
