Humanism, nationalism and violence in Mahmoud Darwish’s poetry
This chapter aims to present a theoretical and empirical reading of the great Palestinian Poet Mahmoud Darwish’s (1941-2008) poetry as pertains to the themes of humanism, nationalism and violence within the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In particular, the article reads his poetry and prose in conjunction with the views of the German thinker Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) and the Martinique psychiatrist Frantz Fanon (1925-1961). These three figurehead thinkers have enhanced our understanding of the human condition within conflict-ridden contexts. Freud engaged critically with Jewish nationalism in its formative years in the 1920s and 30s, whereas Fanon was directly involved with the Algerian struggle against French colonialism in the 1950s. Darwish was a poetic chronicler of the Palestinian question in all its dimensions, particularly since the 1960s. All of them articulated aspirations for universal justice and freedom while taking part in their peoples’ struggles and dilemmas. As will be argued, by emphasising the complementary roles of all members of society in the struggle against the colonizers in his portrayal of the Palestinian struggle, Darwish appears closer to Fanon’s anti-colonial nationalism. Nevertheless, while emphasising the historical conditions that gave rise to Palestinian nationalism, Darwish grew to be critical of it in a tone that is reminiscent of Freud’s criticism of nationalism and collective identities in general. This chapter will examine Darwish’s poetry in relation to the relevance of Freud’s and Fanon’s philosophy

A theory of ISIS : political violence and the global order / Mohammad-Mahmoud Ould Mohamedou
The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria has been the subject of intense scrutiny in the West. Considered by many to be the most dangerous terrorist organisation in the world, it has become shrouded in numerous myths and narratives, many emanating from the US, which often fail to grasp its true nature. Against these narratives, Mohammad-Mahmoud Ould Mohamedou presents a bold new theory of ISIS. By tracing its genealogy and documenting its evolution in Iraq and Syria, he argues that ISIS has transcended Osama Bin Laden?s original project of Al Qaeda, mutating into an unprecedented hybrid form that distils postcolonial violence, postmodernity and the emerging post-globalisation international order. This book analyses ISIS from a social sciences perspective and unpacks its dynamics by looking beyond superficial questions such as its terrorist nature and religious rhetoric. It transforms our understanding of ISIS and its profound impact on the very nature of contemporary political violenc

Nour al-din Mahmoud Zangi`s political relations with Roman and Byzantine Saljuks, a fluctuation from convergence to divergence
Formation of Raha`s and Antioch`s Cruciate governments in the north of Sham and their military threats against Islamic states in that reign caused political convergence and alliance between Nour al-din Mahmoud Zangi`s government and Roman Seljuks, during Masoud ibn Ghalich Arsalan era. The union had mutual advantages for the two sides. After Raha`s government demolished, Antioch weakened and Nour al-Din`s government established, the union ended. Nour al-din`s power threatened Roman Saljuks. So, the conflict between the two governments caused divergence between them. Then, Nour al-Din got closer to Byzantium because of common interests they had. This Article, using an analytical-explanatory method and printed sources, has tried to explain the reasons for the convergence and divergence between Nour al-din Mahmoud Zangi and Roman and Byzantine Saljuks
Diffusive author(s), cohesive author: Analysis of S/N (1994)
This study indicates the ways in which various aspects of the author(s) are brought forth in Dumb type’s performance art, the S/N production. Previous research has suggested a non-hierarchical organization of Dumb type and the absence of a “privileged author” in Dumb type’s collaborative work, S/N. However, the results that I have investigated from member’s interviews on the creative process of S/N along with my analysis of the recorded images of S/N, indicate a different aspect of the author(s). First, S/N was created through, so to speak, the collective ideas of the members of Dumb type. Further, S/N has at least nine quotations from previous performances, installations, and printed writings, besides the work-in-progress technique. Explicating one of the “author functions” as given by Michel Foucault, each text has plural subjects of the author. However, it has been revealed from members’ interviews that Teiji Furuhashi had a decision-making role in selecting the members’ ideas within the performance. Since then, S/N has had plural subjects of creation; however, Furuhashi is one of the subjects of creation along with the “privileged author.” S/N has plural authors (diffusive authors) yet at the same time, it has a “privileged author,” Teiji Furuhashi (cohesive author)
Ruang Ketiga dan Konstruksi Identitas: Hibriditas dalam Karya Mahmoud Darwish
This paper discusses how identity was constructed in Mahmoud Darwish's literary works. Mahmoud Darwish is a symbol of Palestine both poetically and politically. Darwish's life as a refugee and exile greatly influenced his works and attitude towards Israeli-Palestinian peace. This research is qualitative research using literary methods. The data in this study were taken from Mahmoud Darwish’s literary works such as Awraq al-Zaytun (Leaves of Olives), Yawmiyyat Jurh Filastini (Diary of a Palestinian Wound), Muhawalah Raqm 7 (Attempt Number 7), Kazahri al-Lawz aw Ab’ad (Like Almond Flower and Further), Shai’on ‘an al-Wathan (Something about the Homeland) and Dhakirah li-al-Nisyan (Memory for Forgetfulness). In this study, Mahmoud Darwish's works were analyzed using Homi K. Bhabha's post-colonialism theory. Bhabha's idea of hybridity and the third space was used to explain how the homeland was conceived, and identity was constructed in Darwish’s works. The results of this study indicate that the homeland for Darwish is a symbolic and effective one. It can be imagined, but cannot be possessed. Darwish identity was constructed in the third space; a hybrid place where the colonizer and the colonized coexist in the same space
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
