    Bio-bibliometric Study of Dr. Khalid Mahmood’s Contributions to LIS Field in Pakistan

    This paper presents bio-bibliometric analysis of the contributions of Dr. Khalid Mahmood in the field of Library and Information Science through his publications. The analysis includes geographical and year wise distribution of publications; collaboration for publication; publications by type; language and journal preferences for the publication; and coverage of different subject areas. Results of the study indicate that Dr. Khalid Mahmood is a prolific writer in the field of library and information science. He contributed 115 items including 99 articles, six books, eight conference papers and two papers in newsletters till December 31, 2011. Research work by Dr. Khalid Mahmood is well accepted in developed countries like United Kingdom and United States of America. He used English language to disseminate majority of his research work. He believes in teamwork and about two third of his research work was result of collaboration

    Melatonin Induced Cold Tolerance in Plants: Physiological and Molecular Responses

    Cold stress is one of the most limiting factors for plant growth and development. Cold stress adversely affects plant physiology, molecular and biochemical processes by determining oxidative stress, poor nutrient and water uptake, disorganization of cellular membranes and reduced photosynthetic efficiency. Therefore, to recover impaired plant functions under cold stress, the application of bio-stimulants can be considered a suitable approach. Melatonin (MT) is a critical bio-stimulant that has often shown to enhance plant performance under cold stress. Melatonin application improved plant growth and tolerance to cold stress by maintaining membrane integrity, plant water content, stomatal opening, photosynthetic efficiency, nutrient and water uptake, redox homeostasis, accumulation of osmolytes, hormones and secondary metabolites, and the scavenging of reactive oxygen species (ROS) through improved antioxidant activities and increase in expression of stress-responsive genes. Thus, it is essential to understand the mechanisms of MT induced cold tolerance and identify the diverse research gaps necessitating to be addressed in future research programs. This review discusses MT involvement in the control of various physiological and molecular responses for inducing cold tolerance. We also shed light on engineering MT biosynthesis for improving the cold tolerance in plants. Moreover, we highlighted areas where future research is needed to make MT a vital antioxidant conferring cold tolerance to plants

    Neem and Castor Oil–Coated Urea Mitigates Salinity Effects in Wheat by Improving Physiological Responses and Plant Homeostasis

    Soil salinity is abiotic stress of growing concern, whose effects can be potentially mitigated by the use of suitable fertilisers. Based on this, an experiment was conducted to determine the role of vegetable oil–coated urea on the performance of wheat (Triticum aestivum) under salinity. Neem oil–coated urea (NOCU), castor oil–coated urea (COCU), and normal urea (NU) were compared in wheat plants growing in pots at three soil salinity levels (0, 6, and 12 dS m-1). Plant morphology, growth, element contents (Na, Cl, K, and N), and several traits were assessed at the flag leaf stage; biological yield, grain yield, and its components were assessed at maturity. Salinity stunted growth (approximately -50% yield with high salinity vs. control); boosted Na and Cl concentrations while abating K and N concentrations in plant organs; impaired leaf water status; reduced photosynthetic pigments and increased antioxidant activities and osmo-regulating compounds. NOCU and, to a lesser degree, COCU mitigated salinity effects by upgrading antioxidant activities, reducing oxidative stress markers, increasing leaf water status, photosynthetic pigments, and osmo-regulating compounds. However, NOCU under high salinity could only achieve the levels of NU under intermediate salinity. Lastly, NOCU and COCU restricted plant entry of adverse ions (Na and Cl) while increasing K and N accumulation. Vegetable oil–coated urea, namely NOCU, significantly contributed to improving wheat behaviour and final yield under salinity. These outcomes are associated with the two fertilisers’ properties of slow nitrogen release

    This thesis describes both the political and social relations of Judaism, Christianity, the polytheists, and Islam during the time of Muhammad. Specifically, it focuses on how the historical Muhammad interacted with these other religions during both the Meccan and Medinan period of his lifetime. Researching this specific time period allows the author to examine if a foreign policy model can be illustrated by the actions of the historical Muhammad. In the process of researching and writing this thesis, the author conducted a literature review of the earliest possible sources regarding the historical Muhammad and his community at Medina. This thesis is slated to be a reference and a resource for both students and faculty who seek a better understanding of Muhammad's political and social relations with the other religions that he came into contact with during his prophetic career

    This article reports the results of an analysis of literature published in Pakistan Library andInformation Science Journal (PLISJ) during 1998-2007. Various characteristics of literature were analyzed to observe prevailing trends in Library and Information Science (LIS) research in Pakistan. Analysis includes subject covered in articles published in PLISJ; geographic distribution of authors; country of origin of authors; collaboration among authors; contributions to literature on the basis of gender; type of research; language of the article and publication output of PLISJ. Results of the study are compared to previous studies and some recommendations are given for the advancement of LIS research in Pakistan

    al-Misbāh fī al-Nahw By Nāsir al-Dīn al-Mutarrizī al-Nahwī (d. 610/1213) A Critical Edition of the Text with the Life History of the Author

    Nāsir al-Dīn al-Mutarrizī al-Nahwī (d.610/1213) was one of the most renowned figures in the field of Arabic Grammar. He has left an indelible mark on the world of Arabic language and literature. He is also known as the successor of al-Zamakhsharī. He wrote a number of books but his al-Misbāh fī al-Nahw gained prominence at a level that no other book in this field could claim to achieve. For this reason, a great number of commentaries have been written in every age, of which the most famous are al-Daw and Khulāsat al-I‘rāb written by Tāj al-Dīn al-Isfrā’īnī and ‘Abd al- Karīm al-Tūsī (better known as Hājjī Bābā) respectively. Moreover, its translation into other languages also demonstrates its value as a useful book. Although al-Misbāh has been edited on more than one occasion, the published editions do not fulfil the needs and requirements of modern academic research criteria. The basic aim of this thesis is to present this book with a current modern research style so that the students, teachers and ordinary readers of Arabic language and literature may benefit from this work. This thesis is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the life history of the author and his other works. A brief note of the environment under which he grew up (generally referred to as the ‘Seljuk’ period) is also included in this part. The second part consists of a text edition that deals with the derivation (Takhrīj) of syntactical issues together with the differing opinions of grammarians on syntactical/grammatical issues. This part also proffers the idiomatic English translation of al-Misbāh
