Gustav Mahler\'s Fourth Symphony and its reduction in Klaus Simon\'s chamber version: a comparative analysis

    No full text
The present work consists of a comparative analysis between Gustav Mahler\'s Fourth Symphony (1899-1900) and the reduced version for chamber group made by the German pianist and conductor Klaus Simon in 2007. Aiming to identify the technical resources employed in the transposition of the original work, this dissertation maps and discusses Simon\'s choices to maintain the sonority of Mahler\'s composition. Starting from a contextualization and analysis of Mahler\'s 4th Symphony, excerpts and elements for comparison were highlighted and, in the light of the debate on the processes of musical reworking, tools were raised to assist this analysis. Thus, the comparison between the versions observed parameters such as instrumental medium, pitch, timbre, texture, sonority, articulation, accent, dynamics for certain excerpts, seeking to contemplate an overview of the work and its sound objects, as well as to bring its main moments to the analysis. Finally, a set of strategies employed by Simon is illuminated, bringing more or less frequent processes, which, in addition to helping to understand the reduction in question, can guide and inspire future similar musical reworkings

    Bounding the Elliptic Mahler Measure

    No full text
We give a simple inequality relating the elliptic Mahler measure of a polynomial to the traditional Mahler measure (via the length of the polynomial). These bounds are essentially sharp. We also give the corresponding result for polynomials in several variables. Keywords: Mahler measure, elliptic Mahler measure.
