No full textInterview with Dr. Charles Mahan, former dean of the University of South Florida College of Public Health. Trained as an Ob/Gyn at Northwestern University in Chicago, Dr. Mahan spent his residency in Minneapolis, Minnesota under Navy funding, deferring three years of his residency to serve on active duty on a Marine base at Quantico, Virginia during the Vietnam era. After serving, Dr. Mahan returned to Minnesota for five years as head obstetrician for a federal community health center. Dr. Mahan was then recruited into the faculty of the OB department at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. In 1982, after ten years in Gainesville, Dr. Mahan was invited to spend a year in Tallahassee, where he would go on to write a five-year policy plan related to childbirth education. In 1988, Governor Martinez asked Dr. Mahan if he would become the state health department director, which he accepted. In 1995, Dr. Mahan became dean of the University of South Florida College of Public Health, where he would remain until his retirement. Dr. Mahan still serves on some boards related to maternal and child health, notably the Ounce of Prevention Fund in Florida and the Frontier Nursing Service in Kentucky

No full textDr. Charles Mahan received his MD from Northwestern University Medical School in 1964 and completed his residency at the University of Minnesota in 1965. In this oral history interview, Dr. Mahan describes the experiences that spurred his interest in public health, especially in the areas of family planning, prenatal and postpartum care. He also recounts his recruitment by the state of Florida to become a state health officer and director of the state public health program. Dr. Mahan provides details on several state initiatives, including Healthy Start and the North Central Florida Maternity and Infant Care Project. He also describes the successful implementation of a five-year state plan to reduce infant mortality. Throughout the interview, Dr. Mahan stresses the importance community engagement, coalitions, and the promotion of public health to both the general public and legislature. Dr. Mahan concludes his interview by discussing his time as dean in the College of Public Health and the University of South Florida and his role as director of the Lawton and Rhea Childes Center for Healthy Mothers and Babies
