A systematic revision of Paryphthimoides, a satyrine genus widely distributed in Central and South America, is presented based on an integrative approach. Molecular phylogeny inferred using multiple methods with nuclear (GAPDH, RpS5) and mitochondrial (COI) genes indicates that Paryphthimoides, as currently circumscribed, is polyphyletic. A new taxonomic arrangement is proposed reflecting the monophyly based on molecular and morphological evidence. Paryphthimoides now comprises 14 taxa, namely: P. poltys poltys (), P. poltys numilia (C. Felder & R. Felder, 1867) stat. nov., P. vestigiata (Butler, 1867), P. fridae Zacca, Casagrande, Huertas & Nakahara sp. nov., P. jorupe Zacca, Casagrande, Checa & Willmott sp. nov., P. terrestris terrestris (Butler, 1867) comb. nov., P. terrestris muyrakytan Zacca, Casagrande & Mielke ssp. nov., P. terrestris araguaianus Zacca, Casagrande & Mielke ssp. nov., P. terrestris grevei Zacca, Casagrande & Mielke ssp. nov., P. touloulou () comb. nov., P. brixius brixius () comb. nov., P. brixius madre Zacca, Mielke, Casagrande & Lamas ssp. nov., P. brixius rouranensis Brévignon ssp. nov. and P. flavofascia (Zacca & Siewert, 2014) comb. nov. Euptychia zeredatha and P. bahneri are new synonyms of P. p. poltys, and Euptychia binalinea Butler, 1867 and E. poltys bahiana are new synonyms of P. poltys numilia. Lectotypes are designated for Euptychia zeredatha, Neonympha numilia, Euptychia vestigiata, Euptychia terrestris and Euptychia brixiola, Butler, 1867 and a neotype is designated for Satyrus brixius. In addition, female morphology is described for the first time for all available species, and biological data and distributional maps are provided for all species. Last instar and pupae of Paryphthimoides p. poltys are also described

Search for four-top-quark production in the single-lepton and opposite-sign dilepton final states in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

No full text
Recent published results on a search for four-top-quark production, tttt, are presented, based on a dataset collected at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1. The single-lepton and opposite-sign dilepton final states are analysed. The search exploits the high multiplicity of jets/b-tagged jets and the large total sum of jet transverse momenta, which characterise signal events and provide a good discrimination against the tt+jets dominant background, which is estimated through a data-driven method. No significant excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed

Has something changed in the smoking attitudes of parents in the household in the last 15 years? Epidemiological survey among the students of the city of Agrigento [È cambiato qualcosa nelle abitudini dei genitori fumatori in ambito domestico negli ultimi 15 anni? Indagine epidemiologica tra gli alunni della città di Agrigento]

BACKGROUND: Exposure of children to passive tobacco smoking in the household setting has been demonstrated to cause respiratory diseases. Early atherosclerosis has also been demonstrated in young people previously exposed to passive tobacco smoking. Functional damage can initiate at the fetal age due to maternal smoking, with a tendency towards over-time progress. To date only scant data are available about indoor parental smoking attitudes and their changes after campaigns against smoke and risk factors in exposed youths. Questionnaires are useful tools in order to search for information on cigarette smoking and parental household lifestyle. In this study, we asked pupils of primary schools for providing information on their relatives' every 5 years throughout the period 1994-2009. METHODS: A multiple-choice answer questionnaire about sharing household parental smoking was administered to all primary school children (mean age 10.5 ± 0.5 years) of the city of Agrigento (Sicily, Italy). RESULTS: A total of 2221 questionnaires were collected from 637 children in 1994, 687 in 1999, 516 in 2004, and 381 in 2009. Important findings show a significant reduction in both smoking parents and exposure to passive tobacco smoking (from 64% in 1994 to 45% in 2009, p<0.00001). In 2009, 22% of mothers and 39% of fathers resulted to be smokers in the household setting yet. CONCLUSIONS: In agreement with the 2011 Italian DOXA survey on the general population, the present study demonstrates a negative trend in the prevalence of household smoker parents (predominantly mothers) and exposure of children to passive tobacco smoking. These results likely reflect such a greater awareness about smoke-related risks in children, and the effectiveness of medical campaigns against cardiovascular risk factors as well

José Luis Rosales-Alexander,1 Jerónimo Balsalobre Aznar,1 César Magro-Checa2 1Rheumatology Department, Hospiten Ramblas, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 2Rheumatology Department, San Cecilio University Hospital, Granada, Spain Abstract: Calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition disease (CPPD) is an inflammatory arthritis produced by the deposition of calcium pyrophosphate (CPP) crystals in the synovium and periarticular soft tissues. It is the third most common inflammatory arthritis. Diagnosis is suspected on the basis of the clinical picture and radiographic/laboratory findings. The reference standard for the diagnosis of CPPD is based on the identification of CPP crystals in synovial fluid by light microscopy, compensated polarized light microscopy, or phase contrast microscopy. Most treatment approaches for CPPD are based upon clinical experience and not upon controlled trials. They range – depending on the subtype and the characteristics of symptoms – from no treatment to interleukin-1 blockade antibodies or specific therapy for an underlying disease. This review summarizes all we know so far about the diagnosis and management of CPPD. Keywords: calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate deposition disease, CPPD, chondrocalcinosis, crystal-induced arthritide

Targeting and understanding hiv latency: The crispr system against the provirus

No full text
The presence of latently infected cells and reservoirs in HIV-1 infected patients constitutes a significant obstacle to achieve a definitive cure. Despite the efforts dedicated to solve these issues, the mechanisms underlying viral latency are still under study. Thus, on the one hand, new strategies are needed to elucidate which factors are involved in latency establishment and maintenance. On the other hand, innovative therapeutic approaches aimed at eradicating HIV infection are explored. In this context, advances of the versatile CRISPR-Cas gene editing technology are extremely promising, by providing, among other advantages, the possibility to target the HIV-1 genome once integrated into cellular DNA (provirus) and/or host-specific genes involved in virus infection/latency. This system, up to now, has been employed with success in numerous in vitro and in vivo studies, highlighting its increasing significance in the field. In this review, we focus on the progresses made in the use of different CRISPR-Cas strategies to target the HIV-1 provirus, and we then discuss recent advancements in the use of CRISPR screens to elucidate the role of host-specific factors in viral latency

Second and third line treatment in non-small cell lung cancer

No full text
Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, and the advances in second and third line treatment have led to prognostic improvements in the latest years. Besides the two cytotoxic agents, docetaxel and pemetrexed, approved in NSCLC second line treatment, a new class of drugs against specific molecular targets seems to be an alternative to conventional treatment. Many trials are ongoing to assess the activity of new drugs, alone or in association, and new combinations of third-generation chemotherapeutic agents. © 2009 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.
