Assessment of nanoparticle emission in additive manufacturing: Comparing wire and powder laser metal deposition processes
: Additive manufacturing (AM), often referred to as 3-D printing, is an emerging technology with a wide range of industrial applications and process typologies. Although the release of metal nanoparticles as by-products could occur, occupational exposure limits and cogent safety standards are not currently available due to the novelty of the technology. To support the definition of benchmarks, this study aims to provide a preliminary comparison between the nanoparticle release patterns of laser metal deposition, adopting different feedstocks, namely, metal wire and metal powder. The monitored device is a university research setup, and the work presents the results of two different processes with AISI 316L as a feedstock in powder and wired form, respectively. The monitoring confirmed the outcomes of previous studies, with a high release of nanoparticles from the powder head on the device (average 138,713 n/cm3 during printing, with maximum values exceeding 106 n/cm3). Moreover, the results show a significant concentration of nanoparticles with a wire head during the printing phase (average release of 628,156 n/cm3 with a maximum of 1,114,987 n/cm3) and during pauses (average of 32,633 n/cm3 and a maximum of 733,779 n/cm3). The monitored values during pauses are particularly relevant since no personal protection equipment was used in the wire processes and the operators could access the printing room during pauses for device interventions, thus being exposed to significant nanoparticle concentrations. This study presents a preliminary evaluation of the potential exposure during laser metal deposition while implementing different technologies and provides evidence for defining effective operational safety procedures for the operators
62 Evaluating the Potential Exposure to Metal Fine and Nano Particles Generated During Wire and Powder Laser Metal Deposition
This study aims to evaluate the release of fine and nano particles during Additive Manufacturing with wire and powder Laser Metal Deposition where the layers of metal feedstock are deposited and contemporaneously melted by a high-energy beam during the building phase. We analysed an experimental set-up in a research laboratory equipped with two different nozzles: one operates by jetting powder while the second by depositing a metal wire. The campaign included environmental and personal monitoring during whole processes adopting AISI-316L as feedstock. Fine particles are assessed by the optical counter Lighthouse3016-IAQ, allowing to detect six size classes (0.3-10 μm). DiSCmini was used for measuring number and average diameter of nanoparticles (10-300 nm). A significant release of nanoparticles occurred with both nozzles during the building phase and, although the peaks were higher when using the powder nozzle (2.9 x 106 n/cm3), the average values were around five times higher with the wire nozzle (6.5 x 105 n/cm3, 75 nm). Adopting the wire nozzle reduced the particle emissions during initialization and cleaning phase, avoiding handling powders. Considering the state of the art and industrial practice, the relevant novelty of the work lays in the detection of nanoparticles even for wire laser metal deposition due to the melting and partial vaporisation phenomena induced by the high-power density of the laser beam. The results highlight the importance of adopting proper working procedures and personal protective equipment for the operators entering the box when interrupting the building phase with both powder and wire nozzles
Selective laser melting of NiTi stents with open-cell and variable diameter
This work investigates the processing of NiTi open-cell peripheral stents with variable diameter by SLM and consecutive heat treatments. The production of open-cell designs via SLM requires dedicated processing strategies to avoid the use of support structures with comparable dimensions to the stent struts. Process parameters were studied using an SLM system operating with pulsed wave emission to assess the geometrical fidelity and the density of thin struts. The novel stent mesh was designed and produced employing gaps with unmelted powder between the consecutive cells along the build direction. Solution annealing and stress relieving treatments were assessed after SLM. The results show that regular struts with high density (>99.5%) with an austenitic transformation finish below the room temperature can be achieved with SLM and dedicated heat treatment
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
