Superior memory as a new perspective to tackle memory loss
Memory decline is a hallmark of aging and several neuropsychiatric disorders, yet the mechanisms underlying exceptional memory preservation remain poorly understood. This perspective proposes that studying individuals with Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory (HSAM) and other forms of superior memory can provide novel insights into the biological and cognitive processes supporting memory resilience. By integrating evidence from human studies and animal models, we argue that understanding the neural and molecular bases of extraordinary memory may open new avenues for preventing or counteracting memory loss
A Game of Social Forces: Integrating Non-cooperative Game Theory with Social Force Model for a Socially-acceptable Mobile Robot Navigation
Robot integration in daily life demands research on both safety and social acceptance. Current methods focus on safety, but social factors are understudied. Moreover, existing studies lack deep analysis of human perception towards robot movement. Here, we present a novel navigation approach based on the combination of Game Theory and the Social Force Model (GTSFM) to bridge these gaps. We model navigation as a non-cooperative game to consider both pedestrians and robot as rational agents influencing each other’s choices. We evaluate the social acceptability of the GTSFM algorithm from both quantitative and qualitative perspectives. In both evaluations, the GTSFM is compared against two state-of-the-art algorithms: the social force model (SFM) and the optimal reciprocal collision avoidance (ORCA). According to the quantitative analysis performed in simulation, the GTSFM outperforms the SFM in all considered performance metrics and ensures higher performance than ORCA considering the smoothness of the trajectories and the proximity to pedestrians. The qualitative measurement is performed through a real-world experiment using a questionnaire administered to a pool of 76 participants. Our qualitative analysis revealed no statistically significant differences in performance between the algorithms tested. This lack of distinction may be due to unaccounted factors. The robot’s appearance and the limited velocity of the real robot could have obscured the distinction between the algorithms. These results represent a significant milestone in advancing the integration of robots into social environments also leave important hints for future research
Enhanced cortical specialization to distinguish older and newer memories in highly superior autobiographical memory
There is a growing consensus on the role played by the hippocampus and the medial prefrontal cortex in autobiographical memory. However, it is not clear whether and how these key regions play a central role in enabling forms of enhanced memory, such as highly superior autobiographical memory (HSAM). Here, we investigated the role of the hippocampus, the ventromedial (vmPFc) and dorsomedial (dmPFc) prefrontal cortices in discriminating older vs newer autobiographical events in a group of rare individuals with HSAM through multivoxel pattern analysis of functional neuroimaging data. During fMRI scanning, participants with HSAM and normal memory controls were asked to recollect remote and more recent events. We found a stronger neural signature of older vs newer autobiographical memories within the vmPFc of HSAM subjects as compared to controls. In this brain region, the discriminability between the multivariate neural patterns of the two types of memories increased as a function of the temporal distance that separated older and newer events in HSAM subjects. Comparable neural patterns of older vs newer memories were found instead within the dmPFc and hippocampus of both groups. Overall, these findings highlight for the first time that HSAM relies on enhanced vmPFc specialization to represent past experiences, therefore contributing to uncover the neurobiological mechanisms potentially enabling enhanced forms of memory. Implications of the current findings for the extant models of autobiographical memory are discussed
Enhanced brain activity associated with memory access in highly superior autobiographical memory
Brain systems underlying human memory function have been classically investigated studying patients with selective memory impairments. The discovery of rare individuals who have highly superior autobiographical memory (HSAM) provides, instead, an opportunity to investigate the brain systems underlying enhanced memory. Here, we carried out an fMRI investigation of a group of subjects identified as having HSAM. During fMRI scanning, eight subjects with HSAM and 21 control subjects were asked to retrieve autobiographical memories (AMs) as well as non-AMs (e.g., examples of animals). Subjects were instructed to signal the "access" to an AM by a key press and to continue "reliving" it immediately after. Compared with controls, individuals with HSAM provided a richer AM recollection and were faster in accessing AMs. The access to AMs was associated with enhanced prefrontal/hippocampal functional connectivity. AM access also induced increased activity in the left temporoparietal junction and enhanced functional coupling with sensory cortices in subjects with HSAM compared with controls. In contrast, subjects with HSAM did not differ from controls in functional activity during the reliving phase. These findings, based on fMRI assessment, provide evidence of interaction of brain systems engaged in memory retrieval and suggest that enhanced activity of these systems is selectively involved in enabling more efficient access to past experiences in HSAM
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
