DNA extraction from formalin-fixed tissue: new light from the Deep-Sea
DNA samples were extracted from ethanol and formalin-fixed decapod crustacean tissue using a new method based on Tetramethylsilane (TMS)-Chelex. It is shown that neither an indigestible matrix of cross-linked protein nor soluble PCR inhibitors impede PCR success when dealing with formalin-fixed material. Instead, amplification success from formalin-fixed tissue appears to depend on the presence of unmodified DNA in the extracted sample. A staining method that facilitates the targeting of samples with a high content of unmodified DNA is provided.
Three approaches to chronic fatigue syndrome in the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada: Lessons for democratic policy
Decisions about diagnostic categories through clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) represent a central type of informal policy-making which affect the scope of publicly-regulated health services and directions for future research. We examine the development of three diverse sets of CPGs for chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) in the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia in order to examine diverse approaches to the development of such guidelines by medical professionals and other ‘experts’ in concert with inputs from the public, particularly those affected by the disease condition. We argue that the CPGs formulated for CFS in the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada reflect three contrasting modes of policy development, and that the differential levels of acceptance of these guidelines by a range of relevant parties provide guidance as to which mode of policy development is likely to be most effective and acceptable particularly in the domain of controversial or contested domains within medicine.Rachel A. The ℓ s-boundedness of a family of integral operators on UMD banach function spaces
We prove the ℓs-boundedness of a family of integral operators with an operator-valued kernel on UMD Banach function spaces. This generalizes and simplifies earlier work by Gallarati, Veraar and the author, where the ℓs-boundedness of this family of integral operators was shown on Lebesgue spaces. The proof is based on a characterization of ℓs-boundedness as weighted boundedness by Rubio de Francia.Analysi
Perspectives of the River Plate around the time of Rosas : an analysis based upon the personal correspondence, private memoirs and published accounts of British settlers, as well as works by creole authors
This thesis draws inspiration from the emergence of cultural studies as an academic
pursuit, in addition to the current renewal of interest in the relationship between
literary works and their socio-cultural milieux, to bring together an assortment of
textual traces pertaining to the River Plate around the era of Juan Manuel de Rosas,
governor of Buenos Aires and de facto dictator of Argentina for most of the period
1829-1852. The main texts analysed range from private documents relating to two
Scottish settler families, through accounts published by British citizens with first-hand
knowledge of the region (Un inglés, Cinco años en Buenos Aires and
Beaumont, Travels in Buenos Ayres and the Adjacent Provinces), to three influential
pieces of early Argentinian literature (Echeverria's El matadero, Mármol's Amalia
and Sarmiento's Facundo). One justification of this apparently eclectic approach lies
in the prominence accorded to the incomer in the thought of liberal Platine
intellectuals, a concern evinced in their literary production.
The methodology involves examining the representation of certain
fundamental topics across this range of written artefacts, observing frequent points of
thematic convergence amongst the various texts. In this fashion, I construct an image
of the River Plate region around the Rosas period, whilst also appraising the degree
to which early British settlers matched the idealized notion of the immigrant present
in liberal creole writings.
The study is divided into four main chapters, supplemented by an
introduction, conclusion and appendix. The first chapter summarizes the historical
context of the young Platine republics; the second deals with the themes of society,
community and family, the third focuses upon religion; the fourth considers
perspectives of politics, dictatorship and civil war. The appendix consists of an
unpublished settler autobiography, a remarkable account of the tribulations faced on
a daily basis in the developing Argentina

Study on backtesting techniques of Value-at-Risk for China stock markets
1 online resource (38, [48] p.) : col. ill.Includes abstract and appendix.Includes bibliographical references (p. 37-38).VaR is a popular type of technique that focuses on risk measurement, whereas, the precision of VaR model is relied on the backtesting of VaR. Therefore, the approaches of backtesting are initially significant for us to measure the model of VaR. In order to obtain a relatively correct VaR model, the author builds a GARCH model and eliminates the heteroscedasticity effect of this model. Since the importance of risk measurement, the backtesting methods of VaR model should not be ignored. Insofar as we can see, there are two methods of backtesting which are unconditional coverage backtesting and conditional coverage back testing. The results of this study reveal that a back testing VaR model should not just depend on the test of unconditional coverage, but rely on the conditional coverage backtesting. The reason to consider the independence of exception and unconditional coverage backtesting is that the joint test is a more sound and powerful test for us to measure the VaR model. In this study, the author has critically assessed the accuracy of a VaR model to China’s stock market and compared the methods of backtesting. The daily VaRs are calculated by using the Shanghai composite index for the period 2002-2011
The UMD property for musielak–orlicz spaces
In this paper we show that Musielak–Orlicz spaces are UMD spaces under the so-called Δ2 condition on the generalized Young function and its complemented function. We also prove that if the measure space is divisible, then a Musielak–Orlicz space has the UMD property if and only if it is reflexive. As a consequence we show that reflexive variable Lebesgue spaces Lp(·) are UMD spaces.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Analysi
The impact of investor voting right protection on the concentration of corporation ownership of newly listed firms
1 online resource (iv, 54 p.)Includes abstract and appendices.Includes bibliographical references (p. 16-21).Investor voting rights protection is a significant part of corporate governance, and as such it provides issues to the controlling families and their relationship to minority shareholders. This paper studies the relationship of ownership concentration in the companies that have recent IPO's and minority shareholder protection to try to provide an explanation of the relationship between these two factors. The author draws on panel data on corporate ownership for firms that entered the market in the last 5 years in eight developed countries and areas. The data for the firms tend to have concentrated ownership regardless of the level of investor protection
