    Pace, SJ ORCiD: 0000-0001-5171-8109In the mid-1990s, when public commercial use of the Internet was in its infancy, Pace (1997) wrote a book chapter that explored the implications of this emerging technology for the regional community of Mackay in Central Queensland. The chapter entitled "Mackay Online" discussed the Internet's potential impact on regional business, education, health and entertainment. It speculated about the future rollout of a high-bandwidth data network, and it identified a special challenge for the Mackay region which had traditionally prospered from industries that control physical resources such as coal, sugar, and tourism.     International audienceWendy Mackay is a Research Director at INRIA Saclay-Île-de-France where she founded and directs the ExSitu research group in Human-Computer Interaction. She is a former chair of CHI. Her research interests include multidisciplinary , participatory design methods, tangible computing, interactive paper, and situated interaction. In this interview, Mackay discusses working with artists, designers and scientists to build tools for highly creative people to support exploration, execution and sparking ideas without the tools getting in their way. Mackay discusses the principles of discoverability, appropriability and how they relate to co-adaptation for interaction designers. The importance is emphasised of evaluating what people actually do with technology, as opposed to what they were supposed to do with it
