Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Um estudo crítico-sociológico sobre os bastidores editoriais de Vida e morte de M. J. Gonzaga de Sá, de Lima Barreto
No full textVida e Morte de M.J. Gonzaga de Sá, Lima Barreto’s novel, in form of memoirs, exposes
the critical and pessimistic reflections of a man in his sixties, Gonzaga de Sá, about social
and political transformations caused by formation of Brazilian Republic and hypocritical
cultural patterns of Rio´s bourgeoisie. This book, written between 1907 and 1908, was
published by Monteiro Lobato’s Revista do Brasil in 1919. Dialogues and editorial
interventions in the book can be traced from 42 letters between author and editor. These
letters, novel’s original writings and other documents were read in order to understand in
which cultural, literary and editorial conditions Vida e Morte de M.J. Gonzaga de Sá was
published. In this perspective, we intended to develop a critical and sociological study,
recording and analyzing: interventions and choices during the editorial mediation process,
participation of different actors involved with editorial scenery, production circumstances,
cultural expectations, publishing and distribution strategies, as well as reception and
critical fortune about the novel. These analysis allowed us to understand that if, on the one
hand, for Monteiro Lobato, Gonzaga de Sá was an editorial and marketing failure, on the
other hand, for Lima Barreto, the novel resulted in critical praises and honorable mention
award at Academia Brasileira de Letras. Therefore, in order to proceed for this research,
the theoretical-methodological references are: philological tradition, that covers the study
of textual process; Jerome McGann and Don Francis Mckenzie’s Sociology of texts, which
emphasizes production, circulation and reception processes; and Roger Chartier’s purposes
about cultural and editorial mediation.Vida e Morte de M.J. Gonzaga de Sá, romance de Lima Barreto, de modo memorialista,
apresenta-nos as reflexões e as considerações do velho sexagenário, crítico e pessimista
Gonzaga de Sá a respeito, mais acentuadamente, das transformações político-sociais
oriundas da República no Brasil e dos padrões culturais hipócritas da burguesia carioca.
Esse livro, escrito entre 1907 e 1908, foi publicado por Monteiro Lobato em 1919 em sua
editora Revista do Brasil. Os diálogos e as intervenções editoriais e publicitárias em torno
do livro podem ser registrados a partir das 42 cartas trocadas entre o escritor e o editor.
Essas cartas, os originais do romance e outros documentos foram, aqui, utilizados para
entender em quais condições culturais, literárias e editoriais se dá a publicação de Vida e
Morte de M.J. Gonzaga de Sá. Nessa perspectiva, buscamos construir um estudo crítico e
sociológico, registrando e analisando: as intervenções e as escolhas no processo de
mediação editorial, a participação dos diferentes atores envolvidos com a cena editorial, as
condições de produção, as expectativas culturais, as estratégias de publicação e de
distribuição, bem como a recepção e a fortuna crítica a respeito do romance. Essas análises
permitiram-nos compreender que se, para Monteiro Lobato, o Gonzaga de Sá foi um
fracasso editorial e mercadológico, para Lima Barreto, não houve fracasso, pelo contrário,
o Gonzaga de Sá conferiu-lhe muitos elogios da crítica, uma menção honrosa da
Academia Brasileira de Letras, além de um excelente lucro com o pagamento pela edição.
Assim, para realizar essa investigação, tivemos como referências teórico-metodológicas: a
tradição filológica, cuja práxis considera o estudo do processo textual; os pressupostos da
Sociologia do Texto, de Jerome McGann e de Don Francis Mckenzie, os quais dão ênfase
aos processos de produção, circulação e recepção do texto na esfera social; bem como as
articulações de Roger Chartier quanto à mediação cultural e editorial
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
Get PDFWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

"WHAT CAN MY POETRY DO AGAINST IT?”: EDITION, MARKET AND RACISM BACKGROUND TO KALUNGA, BY LANDE ONAWALE
No full textIn the first decade of the 21st century, the Brazilian editorial Market has presented positive production and consumption rate of books in Brazil. Nevertheless, in this country, black writers are in an extremely restricted literary scene, specially when their books discuss strategies against racism and black empowerment. It is possible to see that in the 21st century the high costs, their interests and the editorial expectations imposed that black writers could submit their work to editions of their own responsibility or could present their books to smaller publishing houses. The editorial experience of Lande Onawale – a writer from Salvador, an important name for the literature of Bahia, with the publication of his book Kalunga: Poemas de um mar sem fim (2011) – is studied here as a starting point for understanding the production conditions when the author is the editor of his own text. Furthermore, we intend to analyze the connections between racism and publishing Market. Such investigations were based, from a theoretical and methodological point of view, on the work of Jerome McGann and Francis Don Mckenzie with textual criticism in a sociological perspective. In the meantime, the analyses made confirmed that black writers are even more challenged in order to publish and distribute their work, considering the multiple forms of racism that can be seen in the publishing Market from Bahia/Brazil on the various stages of the book production chain: edition, publication, distribution, circulation and critique.Na primeira década do século XXI, o mercado editorial brasileiro apresentou índices, significativamente, positivos quanto à produção e ao consumo de livros no Brasil. No entanto, escritores e escritoras negras, deste país, ainda se veem diante de uma cena literária bastante restrita, sobretudo quando os seus textos se comprometem com um discurso de combate ao racismo e de empoderamento negro. Tal como verificávamos nos séculos anteriores, no século XXI, os altos custos, os interesses e as expectativas editoriais vigentes impõem aos autores negros a alternativa de submeter os seus textos a edições de responsabilidade própria ou ao trabalho das pequenas casas editoriais. A experiência editorial de Lande Onawale – escritor soteropolitano, importante nome para a literatura negra baiana, com a publicação de seu livro Kalunga: poemas de um mar sem fim (2011) – é estudada, aqui, como um ponto de partida para compreendermos exatamente essas condições de produção em que o autor é o editor do próprio texto, bem como para se perceber as relações limites entre o racismo e o mercado editorial. Essas investigações foram orientadas, do ponto de vista teórico e metodológico, pelas articulações de Jerome McGann e de Francis Don Mckenzie, no campo da Crítica Textual em perspectiva sociológica. Nesse ínterim, as análises empreendidas permitiram-nos constatar que escritores negros são ainda mais desafiados a terem os seus textos publicados e difundidos, haja vista a preponderância dos diferentes gestos racistas que permeiam o mercado editorial baiano/brasileiro nas diferentes etapas da cadeia do livro: edição, publicação, distribuição, circulação e crítica

Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
