Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

No full textTese para ediçãoO desenvolvimento de novas Tecnologias da Comunicação e Informação (TIC’s) possibilitou a popularização do uso da Internet a partir da década de 90 e, com isso, trouxe uma série de transformações para vários âmbitos da nossa vida. Entre essas mudanças, estamos experimentando uma atualização das relações entre representados e representantes possibilitada pelo contato direto através das redes sociais da Internet. Os novos paradigmas da comunicação entre os políticos e os cidadãos são efeito da característica dialética dessa nova forma de comunicação. Diferente de outros momentos históricos, vivemos uma revolução tecnológica que está transformando aos poucos o modo como consumimos informação e transformando o cidadão também em produtor de conteúdo.
Assim, a presença dos representantes populares nas redes sociais já não é novidade. Os mais antenados começaram a marcar território ao mesmo tempo em que essas redes começavam a se popularizar, outros só perceberam a potencialidade da Internet após a bem-sucedida campanha de Barack Obama à Casa Branca em 2008. Hoje, estar presente no mundo on-line é quase obrigatório para aqueles que têm um emprego que depende dos votos dos cidadãos.
Com essa situação consolidada e o Twitter mantendo relativa importância no modo de “fazer política”, percebemos que uns que operam as suas próprias redes sociais e promovem um debate direto com seus seguidores, outros que “terceirizaram” essa tarefa aos seus assessores e fazem da ferramenta um meio mais para divulgação de suas ações. Há ainda os que só aparecem às vésperas das campanhas eleitorais com a clara intenção de conquistar votos.
Independentemente do objetivo, o que está claro é que todos buscam ocupar o espaço das redes sociais de alguma forma. A presença constante no Twitter, a divulgação de informações através de fotos e imagens, o processo de interação com os seguidores e a atenção dada às redes sociais pelos políticos são as indicações de que, se ainda não temos um uso pleno da capacidade dialética das redes sociais, estamos experimentando uma gradual transformação na maneira como os políticos entendem essas ferramentas.The development of new Technologies of Communication and Information (TIC's) made possible the popularization of Internet use from the 90's and, with this, brought a series of transformations to many areas of our life. Among these changes, we are experiencing an update of the relationships between represented and representatives made possible by direct contact through the social networks of the Internet. The new paradigms of communication between politicians and citizens are directly affected by the dialectical characteristic of this new way of communication. Different from others historical moments, we are experiencing a technological revolution that is gradually transforming the way we consume information.
Therefore, the presence of popular representatives in social networks isn’t something new. The more attentive began to mark territory as these networks began to popularize, others only realized the potential of social media such as Twitter after the successful campaign of Barack Obama to the White House in 2008. Today, be present in the online world it is almost mandatory for those who have a job that depends on the votes of citizens.
With this situation consolidated and Twitter retaining relative importance in the way of "making politics", we realize that some of those politicians operate their own social media and use to promote a direct debate with their followers, others who "outsourced" this mission to their advisors and use the tool to publicize their actions. There are still those who only appear on the eve of electoral campaigns with the clear intention of winning votes.
Regardless of the purpose, what is clear is that every politician seeks to occupy the space on social media in some way. The constant presence on Twitter, the dissemination of information through photos and images, the process of interaction with followers and the attention given to social media by politicians are the indications that if we do not yet have a full use of the dialectical capacity of Twitter, we are experiencing a gradual transformation in the way politicians understand this social media
