Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Modelación productiva, económica y de gases de efecto invernadero de sistemas de cría bovina de la pampa deprimida
El objetivo del presente trabajo fue evaluar indicadores productivos, económicos y de gases de
efecto invernadero (GEI) en sistemas típicos de cría vacuna de la Pampa Deprimida (integrada por
dos zonas, Cuenca del Salado y Depresión de Laprida) y evaluar diferentes propuestas de mejora
tecnológica recomendadas regionalmente por el INTA. La tesis comprende a) el desarrollo e
incorporación de un submodelo de simulación de gases de efecto invernado (GEI) a un modelo
bioeconómico preexistente a nivel de establecimiento, b) la identificación de tipos de
establecimientos de cría bovina predominantes en la Pampa Deprimida, c) la simulación dinámica
de indicadores productivos, económicos y de intensidad de emisión de GEI (huella de carbono de
la cuna a la tranquera mediante análisis de ciclo de vida, ACV) de dos tipos de establecimientos
contrastantes (Productor tradicional de escala media, Tr y Empresa local tecnificada de escala
grande, Te) de la Pampa Deprimida, d) la evaluación integral de cambios en los indicadores
productivos, económicos y de intensidad de emisión de GEI de los establecimientos contrastantes
descriptos previamente con la incorporación de propuestas tecnológicas (inclusión del 5 y el 10%
de la superficie del establecimiento con festuca BPM (Buenas Prácticas de Manejo) y anticipación
de la época de primer servicio de vaquillonas (pasando de 27 meses a 15 meses) en aquellos
escenarios con 10% de festuca BMP. El submodelo de GEI incluyó ecuaciones aceptadas
internacionalmente con fuentes de emisión basadas en el enfoque de ciclo de vida del producto
(hasta la tranquera). El submodelo permite estimar dos categorías de emisión: primero, las
emisiones directas e indirectas de metano, óxido nitroso y dióxido de carbono de las actividades de
producción ganadera en los establecimientos, y segundo, las emisiones indirectas de GEI asociadas
con insumos usados en los establecimientos. El submodelo fue incorporado a un simulador
bioeconómico dinámico de paso diario (SIMUGAN) a partir del cual fue posible contar con
indicadores productivos, económicos y de emisión de GEI. Para el análisis de tipologías de
sistemas de cría de la Pampa Deprimida se procesó la información regional (indicadores
productivos, recursos forrajeros y prácticas de alimentación animal, reproducción, prácticas
sanitarias e información social) de 115 establecimientos de una encuesta disponible. No se
encontraron diferencias significativas entre zonas (Cuenca del Salado y Depresión de Laprida), y
posterior a una selección de variables, se utilizó un análisis de conglomerados para establecer las
cuatro tipos de establecimientos: sistema tradicional (Grupo 2: Productor tradicional de escala
media) y tres sistemas tecnificados (Grupo 1: Empresa tecnificada de escala media; Grupo 3:
Empresa local tecnificada de escala grande; Grupo 4: Empresa tecnificada de escala grande). La
carga animal media fue de 0,72 vaca equivalente ha-1
, donde los sistemas tecnificados presentaron mejores indicadores productivos que el tradicional. Los tecnificados se diferencian por cercanía del lugar de residencia del productor y familia, el reclutamiento del personal contratado, forma
jurídica, consumo de consultoría profesional y prácticas aplicadas de salud animal. Los sistemas
productivos tradicionales están basados centralmente en pastizales naturales y los productores y sus
familias generalmente viven en el campo o en una ciudad cercana. Los sistemas tecnificados
incluyen además de la base de pastizal natural, pasturas, cultivos de invierno y de verano. La
comparación entre los sistemas Tr y Te y las propuestas de intensificación determinaron
intensidades de emisión de GEI por unidad de producto (IE) que variaron según el nivel de
intensificación de forma similar (entre 16,4 y 19,9 kg CO2eq kg PV-1). El efecto aditivo de la incorporación de festuca a un 10% de la superficie con el adelanto de la edad al primer servicio de las vaquillonas permitió reducir la IE hasta un 17%. Los resultados sugieren que es factible reducir la IE mediante la adopción de tecnologías disponibles. Esta tesis responde a la contribución metodológica de la aplicación potencial a otras bases de datos agropecuarias u otras producciones
y, en particular, la descripción de la tipología regional de establecimientos ganaderos puede
contribuir a planes específicos de transferencia de tecnología por parte de las instituciones
agropecuarias. Aunque se puede requerir información experimental complementaria, este estudio

(GHG) indicators in typical cow-calf systems located in Flooding Pampas (conformed by two
zones, Salado River Basin and Laprida Depression) and to test different technological
improvement regionally advised by INTA. The thesis includes a) the development and
incorporation of a greenhouse gases (GHG) simulation submodel to a pre-existing bioeconomical
whole-farm model, b) identification of main types of cow-calf farms in the Flooding Pampas from
a local database, c) to simulate productive, economic and GHG emission intensity indicators
(cradle-to gate using life cycle assessment, LCA) of two contrasting regional farms (Medium-scale
traditional farmer, Tr, and Large-scale local technified enterprise, Te) d) to evaluate the impact on
productive, economic and GHG emission intensity indicators of the previously described of
contrasting typical farms with the application of technology improvements (5 and 10% of the farm
area allocated to fescue pasture area managed with Good Practice Management (GPM) and first
mating anticipation of heifers (from 27 to 15 months age) in those scenarios with 10% of GPM
fescue pasture. The GHG submodel was based on internationally accepted equations and arranged
as a cradle-to-farm gate LCA. The submodel allows estimating two emission categories: first, the
direct and indirect emissions of methane, nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide from the livestock
production activities in the farms, and second, the indirect emissions from farm inputs. The GHG
submodel was incorporated into a bioeconomic whole-farm simulator of daily time-step
(SIMUGAN) in order to assess productive, economic and GHG emission indicators. Regional
information (productive indicators, forage resources, animal feeding practices, reproduction,
animal health practices, and social information) about 115 farms from an available survey was
processed to obtain cow-calf farm typologies. No significant differences were found between zones
(Salado River Basin and Laprida Depression), therefore after a variable selection, a conglomerate
analysis was used to identify the four farm clusters: traditional system (Group 2: Medium-scale
traditional farmer) and three technified systems (Groups 1 and 4: Medium- and large-scale
technified enterprise, respectively, and Group 3: Large-scale local technified enterprise). Overall
mean stocking rate was 0.72 cow unit ha-1
, but with better productive indicators in technified
groups. Within technified clusters, main differences were associated to the farmer and his/her
family´s residence, farm employees, farm ownership, uptake of agricultural consultancy and
adoption of specific animal management practices. Traditional systems were based on natural
grasslands and farmers and their families usually live in the farm or in a town nearby. Technified
systems include cultivate pastures, winter and summer crops in addition to natural grasslands.
GHG intensities per unit of product (EI) varied accordingly to the intensification level in a similar
trend for Tr and Te scenarios (between 16.4 and 19.9 kg CO2eq kg PV-1
). The combination of
GPM to fescue pastures up to 10% of farm with an early (15 mo) first mating reduced EI up to
17%. Results suggest that it is feasible to reduce EI by the adoption of available technologies. This
whole thesis performs to the methodological contribution of potential application to other farm
databases or other productions, and in particular, the description of regional livestock farm
typology may contribute to specific technology transfer plans by agricultural institutions. Although
complementary experimental information may be required, this study provides useful insights
regarding GHG mitigation opportunities for policy makers and farmers.

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
