Sub-Saharan Cities under Climate Change. Exploring the adaptive capacity of peri-urban settlements in coastal Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
OBJECTIVES
• Evaluate the results of the audit exercise on the adaptive capacity of peri-urban households and institutions;
• Provide an opportunity for sharing information and exchanging ideas among researchers, and stimulating initiatives for international networking.
DRIVING QUESTIONS
• How to assess people’s capacity to adapt to environmental change in peri-urban areas of Sub-Saharan cities?
• How to assess local institutions’ capacity to support peri-urban people in their effort to respond to environmental change?

Comments on `Hydrogen bonds in crystalline D-alanine: diffraction and spectroscopic evidence for differences between enantiomers'
The recent paper by Belo, Pereira, Freire, Argyriou, Eckert & Bordallo [(2018), IUCrJ, 5, 6–12] reports observations that may lead one to think of very strong and visible consequences of the parity-violation energy difference between enantiomers of a molecule, namely alanine. If proved, this claim would have an enormous impact for research in structural chemistry. However, alternative, more realistic, explanations of their experiments have not been ruled out by the authors. Moreover, the theoretical calculations carried out to support the hypothesis are unable to differentiate between enantiomers (molecules or crystals). Therefore, the conclusions drawn by Belo et al. (2018) are deemed inappropriate as the data presented do not contain sufficient information to reach such a conclusion
I. Carabellese, G.P. Consoli, A. Labalestra, D. Pastore, N. Scardigno.
Double cloprostenol administration during mid luteal phase of oestrous cycle does not modify the interoestrous interval in gilts
The present study was undertaken to test the effect of two vulva injections of D-cloprostenol on day 7, 9 and 10 of oestrous cycle on the duration of the interestrous interval in gilts. Following a pre-treatment oestrous cycle, 87 gilts were assigned to receive vulva injections of 75 μg D-cloprostenol at 08:00 and 14:00 h on day 7 (D7; n=30), day 9 (D9; n=29) or day 10 (D10; n=28) of their second observed oestrous cycle. Across the treatments, the duration of the oestrous cycle with D-cloprostenol treatment (19.1±0.1 d) was not different from that of the previous oestrous cycle (20.1±0.4 days). Plasma progesterone concentrations were evaluated 6 h before and 24 and 72 h after D-cloprostenol treatment in the D9 group. Compared to pretreatment levels (9.6±0.4 ng/mL), plasma progesterone concentrations were reduced (P<0.05) at 24 h (6.3±1.0 ng/mL) and 72 h after treatment but complete luteolysis did not occur. These data indicate that in gilts double vulva administration of D-cloprostenol is not able to induce a complete luteolisys and hence the duration of the oestrous cycle is not modified.Claudio Mazzoni, Roberta Saleri, Roy N. The organization of the ipsi- and contralateral claustrocortical system in rat with notes on the bilateral claustrocortical projections in cat
The organization of the claustrocortical system was investigated in rat by means of cortical injections of either lectin-conjugated horseradish peroxidase or retrograde fluorescent tracers. The latter were also employed in cat. Evans Blue, Fast Blue, True Blue, Nuclear Yellow and Diamidino Yellow were used in different combinations and were injected, uni- or bilaterally, in different cortical fields. Cells retrogradely labeled from each cortical injection were observed in the ipsi- and contralateral claustrum. Anterogradely labeled terminals were also seen in the claustra of both sides in the horseradish peroxidase experiments. The topographic and quantitative study of the distribution of labeled neurons showed a topographic organization of the rat's claustrocortical system, although a certain degree of overlap of the cell populations projecting to frontal and occipital fields was also evident. Four types of branched claustrocortical neurons were observed in the double labeling experiments: neurons branch ing ipsilaterally (A) or contralaterally (B) to anterior and posterior cortical fields; neurons branching bilaterally to homotopic (C) or heterotopic (D) cortical fields. Each population of branched neurons was equivalent to a different percent value of the total labeled cell populations; the percent value decreased from type A to type D. Type C branched neurons were also identified in the claustrofrontal system of the cat. The intricate organization of the claustral-ascending projections suggests that the nucleus is involved in different cortical activities and that its efferents may also provide the substrate of a powerful subcortical mechanism of interhemispheric communication
