Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
The archaeal RecJ-like proteins : nucleases and ex-nucleases with diverse roles in replication and repair
RecJ proteins belong to the DHH superfamily of phosphoesterases that has members in all three domains of life. In bacteria, the archetypal RecJ is a 5’→3’ ssDNA exonuclease that functions in homologous recombination, base excision repair and mismatch repair, while in eukaryotes, the RecJ-like protein Cdc45 (which has lost its nuclease activity) is a key component of the CMG (Cdc45-MCM-GINS) complex, the replicative DNA helicase that unwinds double-stranded DNA at the replication fork. In archaea, database searching identifies genes encoding one or more RecJ family proteins in almost all sequenced genomes. Biochemical analysis has confirmed that some but not all of these proteins are components of archaeal CMG complexes and has revealed a surprising diversity in mode of action and substrate preference. In addition to this, some archaea encode catalytically inactive RecJ-like proteins, and others a mix of active and inactive proteins, with the inactive proteins being confined to structural roles only. Here, I summarise current knowledge of the structure and function of the archaeal RecJ-like proteins, focusing on similarities and differences between proteins from different archaeal species, between proteins within species, and between the archaeal proteins and their bacterial and eukaryotic relatives. Models for RecJ-like function are described and key areas for further study highlighted.Peer reviewe
Structure and function of the GINS complex, a key component of the eukaryotic replisome.
High-fidelity chromosomal DNA replication is fundamental to all forms of cellular life and requires the complex interplay of a wide variety of essential and non-essential protein factors in a spatially and temporally co-ordinated manner. In eukaryotes, the GINS complex (from the Japanese go-ichi-ni-san meaning 5-1-2-3, after the four related subunits of the complex Sld5, Psf1, Psf2 and Psf3) was recently identified as a novel factor essential for both the initiation and elongation stages of the replication process. Biochemical analysis has placed GINS at the heart of the eukaryotic replication apparatus as a component of the CMG [Cdc45-MCM (minichromosome maintenance) helicase-GINS] complex that most likely serves as the replicative helicase, unwinding duplex DNA ahead of the moving replication fork. GINS homologues are found in the archaea and have been shown to interact directly with the MCM helicase and with primase, suggesting a central role for the complex in archaeal chromosome replication also. The present review summarizes current knowledge of the structure, function and evolution of the GINS complex in eukaryotes and archaea, discusses possible functions of the GINS complex and highlights recent results that point to possible regulation of GINS function in response to DNA damage
Understanding the enzymology of archaeal DNA replication: progress in form and function
The analysis of completed archaeal genome sequences led to the identification of a set of approximately 10-20 genes whose protein products were inferred to be involved in chromosomal DNA replication. Until recently, however, little was known of the biochemical properties of these proteins. Here, I review recent progress in this area brought about by biochemical and structural analysis. Aside from shedding considerable new light on the molecular machinery of DNA replication in the archaea, the results of these studies also present new opportunities for understanding the molecular events of chromosomal DNA replication in eukaryotic cells.</p
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
