Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. How does Wonder Woman Syndrome influence the occurrence and effect of burnout among university students before entering their profession?
No full textThis thesis explores the complex relationship between Wonder Woman Syndrome and the incidence and consequences of burnout among university students, particularly those pursuing a professional career. The primary aim of the study was to investigate the intricacies of work-related stress and its association with burnout in Acadia University’s Faculty of Professional Studies students. “How does Wonder Woman Syndrome influence the occurrence and effect of burnout among university students before entering their profession?”, was the main research topic that drove this study. In my survey, participants aged 17 to 27 represented the age range of students. They spanned from first to fifth year levels, providing comprehensive insights into their various stages of academic progress. Thirty-one participants identified as female, while the remaining nine identified as male or non-binary. The study’s findings on burnout show important trends among its subjects, including a high frequency of exhaustion, depersonalization, and low personal accomplishment. Six individuals exhibited low exhaustion levels, eight displayed moderate levels, and twenty-six presented with high degrees of exhaustion. There were differences in the participants’ levels of depersonalization; nine were classified as low, fifteen as moderate, and sixteen as high. Furthermore, three individuals had high levels of personal achievement, six had moderate levels, and thirty-one had low levels. A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) revealed that burnout levels were not substantially impacted by gender. The widespread problem of academic burnout that many students, including myself experience, greatly frustrates me, and this is the reason I conclude my analysis with an autoethnographic chapter. This research highlights academic burnout’s prevalence and urges structural reforms to support student wellbeing by addressing root causes like demanding course designs and excessive workloads.</p

No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Understanding culturally diverse temporal structures in the workplace
No full textThis dissertation explores the organizational culture of a ski hill nestled in the Kootenay region of British Columbia. Conducted through qualitative methods, the study seeks to understand ski hill employees’ perceptions of their work environment, unveiling the temporal structures associated with the organization. The term temporal structure is defined as a patterned organization of time, used by humans to help them manage, comprehend, or coordinate their use of time. Through the insights of five participants, a vivid portrayal of the Kootenay lifestyle emerges, shedding light on how ‘place’ significantly influences an organization’s temporal structure. Drawing from Edward T. Hall’s work, specifically the concepts of monochronic and polychronic cultures, the study categorizes the temporal dynamics inherent in the Kootenay ski hill. Additionally, John J. Ivers’ work on subcultural disparities was also relied on to better understand where temporal structures may emerge. The participants collectively agreed they had never heard any terms associated with temporal structures, yet they all described polychronicity perfectly when sharing their perspectives on their work environments. This study revealed how management and employees in a Canadian organization, situated in a country historically aligned with a monochronic way of life, comprehend and appreciate this supposedly foreign concept that is a polychronic lifestyle. There are numerous avenues one should consider if one wishes to expand upon the findings presented in this dissertation. The strongest opportunity would be to target a large-scale ski hill outside the Kootenays and conduct the same qualitative method in order to determine if ‘place’ influences the temporal structure at play within that organization.</p

No full textDiving into the growing industry of esports and competitive video gaming, this thesis provides a case study of four of the main professional sports leagues in North America in an effort to understand what has led their esports developments to their current state. Esports refers to competitions and events that involve individuals or teams competing against one another in a video game. This
research came about as a result of personal motivations and an understanding of the connections between professional sports and esports in North America. A limited amount of research in this field, and particularly inthe connections between professional sports and esports spearheaded this analysis. The study examines the four professional sports leagues in North America with developed esports scenes, specifically the MLS, NBA, NFL, and NHL. Using a multi-case study, the research analyzes the histories of the leagues, growth of the leagues, as well as their current state of both sport and esport to uncover trends and themes that seem to have the most impact on esports success. Current and former athletes, as well as owners and front-office management
getting involved in esports appeared to be a constant theme among all leagues, thus it became its own point of examination. After completing the analysis of the leagues and the involvement of athletes and owners, three common factors became the most apparent in understanding what has led each esport to its current state: the focus on geographical expansion, internationalization, and the involvement of influential figures.This thesis provides evidence as to the importance of these things when explaining why some sport-related esports may be more successful than others, as well as starting a conversation for what things impact esport success with ties to professional sports and how to continue to grow the MLS, NBA, NFL, and NHL esports environment
