Strategic investment and excess capacity: A study of the Taiwanese flour industry.
No full textThe Taiwanese flour industry’s capacity utilization rate has maintained an extremely low level of 40% for more than 20 years. This article sets up a two-stage game model and uses the strategic effect of the firm’s capital investment on its rivals’ outputs to explain the nature of this excess capacity. The model is tested with panel data from the Taiwanese flour industry by using non-linear three-stage least squares. The evidences indicate that a large capacity built in the past could have been used strategically to reduce other firms’ outputs, in the context of a concerted action among the incumbent firms.strategic investment, two-stage game, collusion, conjectural variation

No full textChi d’esso loco fa parole, / non dica Ascesi, ché direbbe corto, / ma Orïente, se proprio dir vuole. I versi del Paradiso dantesco che nominano Assisi, in cui nacque al mondo un sole chiamato Francesco, suonano come un pronostico, se letti nel contesto del libretto amorosissimo di Cheng. Qui Oriente e Occidente, tradizione taoista e cristianità scoprono la loro comunione grazie all’universalità del santo più venerato. A testimoniarla, in una scrittura tersa che ha la chiarità delle estati umbre, è un migrante giunto in Francia dalla Cina. Adesso è una gloria letteraria nella terra che l’ha accolto, ma quando vide per la prima volta Assisi, nel 1961, non era che un giovane esule in preda allo spaesamento. Di quell’incontro inaspettatamente abbagliante con i luoghi francescani volle serbare per sempre memoria iscrivendolo nel suo stesso nome: all’atto della naturalizzazione francese, dieci anni dopo, scelse François al posto del cinese Chi-hsien, celebrante la saggezza. Origini e approdi si pongono così per lui sotto il segno di una segreta alleanza, di cui Francesco diventa l’emblema. Se ne cercherebbe invano, in queste pagine, l’immagine agiografica tutta mansuetudine e candore. «Il Grande Vivente», lo chiama Cheng, e ne avverte la presenza di «eterno contemporaneo» soprattutto tra le rocce incorruttibili che gli fecero da giaciglio. All’intellettuale cinese istruito nella geomantica del Tao, l’antica arte di decifrare l’energia dei paesaggi, la topografia della santità – l’Eremo delle Carceri, la Porziuncola, San Damiano – manifesta subito il proprio corpo vivo e pulsante. No full textThere are four stories here. "When the Tiger was Rescued by the Old Taoist Monk" is an intriguing tale. During a flood, the Taoist master has his monks save villagers and even their property. They see an animal floating and the master wants him saved. The animal turns out to be a tiger. Should they tie him up in the boat? "No." opines the master; "he will not hurt someone who has saved him." As they get to the shore, the tiger jumps on the master and has to be driven away. Fables carry this story in different directions, from Androcles to the frozen snake who bites his "savior" as soon as he warms up. The art for this story is, I believe, the best in this series of three books. "How a Hen was Taken in" tells of a protective hen guarding her chicks against worthy predators like an eagle and a cat. Then a crow shows up, is friendly, hangs around, comes closer -- and soon makes off with a chick. This is a frequent Aesopic motif, found for example in a shepherd who raises or otherwise trusts a wolf. "Wang Hao Looks for his Horse" because his horse has been covered with hoarfrost and has turned white. After some frantic searching, Wang Hao comes back and of course finds his bay-colored horse again. "Zi Han Declines the Precious Jade" and, in rejecting this tribute of respect, Zi Han gains even more respect. Though better in this respect than Volume II, this book is sometimes careless about the placement of text on colors that render the text hard to read. Apparently the artist and design people did not cooperate well.
