Data for: Diffusion of Knots along DNA Confined in Nanochannels
MATLAB codes, figure data, DNA imagesWe study the diffusion of knots along relaxed DNA in nanochanels using a nanofluidic "knot factory" device for knot generation. The knot diffusion data for the article is published as "Diffusion of knots along DNA Confined in Nanochannels" in Macromolecules. The data includes DNA images before and after knot generation and all the data used to generate the figures in the article.Sponsorship: NIH (R01-HG006851) and NSF (CBET-2016879)Ma, Zixue; Dorfman, Kevin D. Data for: Diffusion of knotted DNA molecules in nanochannels in the extended de Gennes regime
MATLAB codes, figure data, DNA imagesWe study the effect of knots on DNA diffusion in nanochannels using a nanofluidic "knot factory" device for knot generation. The unknotted and knotted DNA diffusion data for the article is published as "Diffusion of knotted DNA molecules in nanochannels in the extended de Gennes regime" in Macromolecules. The data includes DNA images before and after knot generation and all the data used to generate the figures in the article.Sponsorship: NSF (CBET-2016879)Ma, Zixue; Dorfman, Kevin D. (2021). Extracting Boer-Mulders functions from p+D Drell-Yan processes
We extract the Boer- Mulders functions of valence and sea quarks in the proton from unpolarized p + D Drell- Yan data measured by the FNAL E866 Collaboration. Using these Boer- Mulders functions, we calculate the cos2 phi asymmetries in unpolarized pp Drell- Yan processes, both for the FNAL E866/ NuSea and the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider experiments. We also estimate the cos2 phi asymmetries in the unpolarized p (P) over bar Drell- Yan processes at GSI.Astronomy & AstrophysicsPhysics, Particles & FieldsSCI(E)37ARTICLE5null7
"Closing the R&D Gap, Evaluating the Sources of R&D Spending"
Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.

V2 Data for: Interactions between two knots in nanochannel-confined DNA molecules
MATLAB codes, figure data, DNA imagesWe study the interaction between knots in nanochannel-confined DNA molecules using a nanofluidic "knot factory" device for knot generation. The two-knot interaction data for the article is published as "Interactions between two knots in nanochannel-confined DNA molecules" in Journal of Chemical Physics. The data includes DNA images after two-knot generation and all the data used to generate the figures in the article.Ma, Zixue; Dorfman, Kevin D. (2021). MeSH term explosion and author rank improve expert recommendations
Information overload is an often-cited phenomenon that reduces the productivity, efficiency and efficacy of scientists. One challenge for scientists is to find appropriate collaborators in their research. The literature describes various solutions to the problem of expertise location, but most current approaches do not appear to be very suitable for expert recommendations in biomedical research. In this study, we present the development and initial evaluation of a vector space model-based algorithm to calculate researcher similarity using four inputs: 1) MeSH terms of publications; 2) MeSH terms and author rank; 3) exploded MeSH terms; and 4) exploded MeSH terms and author rank. We developed and evaluated the algorithm using a data set of 17,525 authors and their 22,542 papers. On average, our algorithms correctly predicted 2.5 of the top 5/10 coauthors of individual scientists. Exploded MeSH and author rank outperformed all other algorithms in accuracy, followed closely by MeSH and author rank. Our results show that the accuracy of MeSH term-based matching can be enhanced with other metadata such as author rank
Virulence of MERS-CoV-MA-Δ4b and MERS-CoV-MA-mNLS in mice.
30-week-old hDPP4-KI mice were intranasally inoculated with 5x104 pfu of MERS-CoV-MA-WT (WT), MERS-CoV-MA-Δ4b (Δ4b) or MERS-CoV-MA-mNLS (mNLS) viruses. Weight loss (A) and survival (B) were monitored for 12 days. Error bars represent standard deviations of the mean (n = 5 mice per group). (C) Representative images of pulmonary histopathological lesions (H&E staining; magnification 10x) observed in mice euthanized at 4 and 6 dpi. Alveolar septal thickening, perivascular and peribronchiolar cuffs populated by lymphocytes (black arrows) and alveolar edema (red arrowheads) were among the most characteristic inflammatory lesions observed. (D) Scores associated with edema and cell infiltrates at 4 and 6 dpi. (E) Viral titers in the lungs were determined by plaque assay at 4 and 6 dpi (n = 3).</p
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
