Prenatal restraint stress differentially modifies basal and stimulated dopamine and noradrenaline release in the nucleus accumbens shell: an 'in vivo' microdialysis study in adolescent and young adult rats. Silvagni A, Barros VG, Mura C, Antonelli MC, Carboni E. Department of Toxicology, Via Ospedale 72, 09124 Cagliari, Italy. Gestational stress [prenatal stress (PNS)] has been associated with low birth weight, preterm delivery, and higher vulnerability to psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, depression or attention deficit with hyperactivity disorder. The alteration of catecholamine transmission has been attributed a major role in the etiology of psychiatric disturbances. We investigated the effect of PNS on basal and stimulated dopamine and noradrenaline output in the nucleus accumbens of freely moving adolescent and young adult rats (30-35 and 60-70 postnatal days respectively) because of the importance of this area in drug dependence and possibly in psychiatric disorders that are treated with drugs that act on dopamine and noradrenaline transmission. Stimulation was obtained with intraperitoneal amphetamine (0.25 mg/kg) or subcutaneous nicotine (0.4 mg/kg). The results showed the following: (i) basal and amphetamine-stimulated dopamine output in adolescent and adult PNS rats is higher than in controls; (ii) nicotine-stimulated dopamine output is lower than in controls in adolescent but not in adult PNS rats; (iii) basal noradrenaline output is lower than in controls in adolescent but not in adult PNS rats; (iv) amphetamine-stimulated noradrenaline output is higher than in controls in adult but not in adolescent PNS rats; (v) nicotine-stimulated noradrenaline output in PNS rats is higher than in controls, although only in adults. These results show that PNS may produce a complex change in accumbal dopamine and noradrenaline transmission. We discuss the possibility that these changes might be correlated with the development of psychiatric disorders or with an increased vulnerability to drug addiction.

This paper discusses Late Roman cooking wares from recent excavations in the ‘Zona Mura’ (Marsala). A systematic research to investigate monuments and artifacts in detail, focusing on the role of Lilybaeum in the Mediterranean context from Hellenistic to Late Roman times, was planned by the mission of Hamburg and Palermo Universities; the ‘Lilybaeum Archaeological Project’ started in 2007 in collaboration with the Superintendence of Trapani and the Archaeological Museum of Marsala. Hence, an area into the north-eastern sector of the Archaeological Park of Marsala, the so-called ‘Zona Mura’, was identified; in connection with a preliminary geological survey and geophysical prospecting, in 2008-2009 excavations carried out in the area brought to light some architectural remains of a brick wall, belonging to a Late Roman rebuilding of a part of the city wall; remains of insulae, situated in the southern part of the surveyed area (fragments of wall paintings and a white mosaic floor were found still in loco); part of two limestone-paved roads flanked with pavements and ruins of a Late Roman sewer. The preliminary results of the ongoing pottery study are promising. African tableware and cooking ware, Pantellerian ware, African amphoras are well represented products, but there are samples of regional and unknown provenance as well. One prominent research objective for our team is the analysis of the dynamic pattern of relations between different production-centres of ceramics deriving from the ‘Zona Mura’..

Interactively using Semantic Web knowledge: Creating scalable abstractions with FacetOntology

    No full text
The amount of knowledge accessible on the Semantic Web is growing, and there is a need for a scalable solution to facilitate exploring that data. Currently approaches to exploring Semantic Web data either focus on exploring resources individually, following links during exploration, and making little use of collated data, or take the approach of collating and aligning multiple sources into one store for one purpose, and hand-crafting a specific browsing interface onto it. We present an approach that provides a scalable browsing interface, which can browse knowledge from the Semantic Web at will. Our approach creates abstractions of knowledge, collated into facets, which are described using FacetOntology. FacetOntology facilitates describing facets from RDF data, suitable for use in creating datasets for faceted browsing

Growth Morphologies and Mechanisms of Non-Equilibrium Solidified MC Carbide

    No full text
Growth morphologies and mechanisms of the carbide of group IVB and VB elements (MC carbide), a typical faceted crystal, were studied with an estimated cooling rate from 102 to 105 K/s. Results showed that although the growth morphologies of the MC carbide vary remarkably with solidification cooling rate, the solid/liquid interface is always atomically smooth, and the growth mechanisms are always lateral growth. The growth mechanism transition from lateral to continuous growth mode, which was predicted by the classic crystal growth theory, was not observed for the TiC type MC carbide within the estimated cooling rate range of 102?105 K/s
