This dissertation is about experience of being ill and cure. It is based on analytic concepts proposed by the Anthropology of Health. It aims to understand how individuals of Mura's society of Autazes (Amazonas-Brazil) experiences "hanseníase" (leprosy) and the contexts that the experience happens. It is an ethnography that seeks to situate the individual and collective experiences of the illness in a descriptive frame of the Mura's society, whose population is about 7.629 inhabitants, distributed in 27 villages. For the World Health Organization, leprosy is a problem of public health in Brazil. The State of Amazonas is classified like hiperendemic by the Ministério da Saúde (Brazilian National Department of the Health). From the native point of view and for his leaders, "hanseníase" inserts itself as problem and worry inside a set of diseases, whose diagnoses and treatment are related directly with the Public Services of Health. Between the Mura, the absolute number of leprosy cases is small (only 3 individuals were under treatment in 2006). The data presented and analyzed here were obtained through a fieldwork carried out at six Mura villages through participant observation and interviews. These were carried out not only with persons that were patients, but also with their relatives, neighbors, friends, traditional leaders and Mura specialists (medicine men, midwives and people who knows medicine plants) and also professionals of health. The results point to the articulation of native conceptions with biomedical practices, which are evoked in natives causalities for "hanseníase", although is the biomedic diagnosis that focuses the symptoms of the "hanseníase". There is a perception that distinguishes the recent cases of the old cases, based on changes occurred in the offer and in the form of biomedic treatment. The social construction of the illness in a especific social context, inside the Mura´s social relations, is penetrated by the micro-political relations that are structured around relationship (thought reciprocity and co-substanciality) establishing and re-structuring these same relations

Roberto Gerhard was a pioneer of electronic music in England creating a number of substantial concert, theatre and radio works from as early as 1954. Gerhard’s electronic music is one of the richest repositories for understanding the development of the composer’s late compositional technique. Apart from the Symphony no.3, ‘Collages’, none of Gerhard’s electronic music is published. This paper will discuss aspects of Gerhard’s electronic music, focusing on Audiomobiles (1958-59) and Sculptures (1963)

Roberto Gerhard’s Sound Compositions: A Historical-Philological Perspective. Archive, Process, Intent and reenactment

    No full text
This research advances the current state of knowledge in the field of early tape music both empirically and methodologically. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact that the electronic medium exerted in the musical thinking of Roberto Gerhard, one of the most outspoken, prolific and influential composers in the Spanish diaspora whose musical legacy, for the most part unknown, is a major landmark in the early history of electroacoustic music. Gerhard’s personal tape collection, one of the largest historical archives of its kind reported in the literature, is exceptional for both its antiquity (50+-year-old tapes) and its abundance of production materials. Through the digitisation and analysis of the composer’s tape collection this research argues that the empirical study of audio documents sets out a basis for a broader understanding of textual processes. More specifically, the research demonstrates that the reconstruction of works based on magnetic tape sketches is a powerful method to advance the understanding of early tape music. This research also examines Gerhard’s sound compositions in relation to the post-war context in which they were composed. Finally, this research presents performance documentation that proposes an approach to the electroacoustic music repertoire in which creativity is not at odds with rigor and critical discernment demonstrating that archival study can be closely aligned to the concept of re-enactment

An LPV/H-infinity framework for the active control of vibrations in helicopters

    No full text
In this paper a novel approach to the design of active controllers aimed at reducing vibrations in helicopter applications is proposed. In particular the role of variability in the vibratory response of the helicopter (such as due to, e.g., varying flight condition and actuator nonlinearities) is taken into account in the synthesis of a robust parameter-varying controller, based on a discrete-time LPV model of the system. Numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, in comparison to other classical strategies

Nature and duration of the accounting differences between Italian and US GAAP: A case study on conservatism

    No full text
Purpose: This paper focuses on alternative accounting treatments over time to assess their impact on the level of conservatism in a comparison between Italian local accounting standards and United States generally accepted accounting principles (US GAAP). Design/methodology/approach: A case study approach is adopted to investigate the accounting ad-justments applied to net income and shareholders’ equity as included in the Form 20-F reconciliations reported by all Italian firms that were listed on a US market over the period 1999-2008. The methodology first introduced by Gray (1980) and frequently applied over 30 years to several international accounting comparisons is adapted to recognise a multi-period dimension of the accounting choice. In particular, we focus on the temporal dimension of such adjustments in order to capture their attitude to reverse or become permanent over time. Findings: The results show that the level of conservatism is visible in the measurement of net assets and is shaped by the prevailing directional effect of accounting adjustments that become permanent as their cumulative reversal is persistently delayed. Such a phenomenon arises and intensifies when the accounting differences relate to recurring operations and/or to long-term assets and liabilities. Amongst them, those violating the clean surplus relation are the most controversial as they not only generate a permanent effect in the measurement of net assets, but also an opposite permanent effect in the measurement of earnings. Originality/value: Our propositions express a sequence of the timing effects of alternative accounting treatments that highlight the primary role of permanent differences in persistently shaping the value of net assets and helping to provide a less erratic interpretation of the level of conservatism. Practical implications: Identifying the duration of alternative accounting treatments is also relevant to assess the potential influence on stakeholders’ decision making process as this may steadily influence the future of a firm

Introduzione al bilancio di esercizio. Normativa civilistica, principi contabili nazionali e profili fiscali

    No full text
