Phonemic Interference of Local Language in Spoken English by Students of English Department of Lambung Mangkurat University
No full textAbstract—In the process of learning foreign language, learners often face a number of difficulties. The difficulties are related to learning new phonemics, new vocabulary, and various ways of arranging words into sentences in a new language. Learning English for students of Lambung Mangkurat University is a difficult matter. This is because their habit in using local language (Banjarese) is said to be strong, so it is difficult for them to change it. As a result, they simply apply the pattern and the phonemic rules of Banjarese language into English. This causes interference.In detail, the interference is caused by many differences between the two languages, namely Banjarese language and English. Banjarese language has 3 vowels, while English has 12 vowels. Banjarese language only has 3 diphthongs, whereas English has 9 diphthongs. Banjarese language only has 18 consonants, while English has 24 consonants. Given that the students’ habit in speaking Banjarese language has been strong and there are many differences of phonemic elements, interference phenomenon cannot be avoided, which is, in this case, phonemic interference.

No full textLiterature is a kind of the artwork which uses a language as a medium. If it said that literature is a language in one side, learning literature is, at the same time, learning a language in the other side. English literature is literature written in English language. In this relation, learning English literature is, at the same time, learning English language. If literature talks about human life, by using literary works we can learn and build our social awareness, and at almost the same time we can contribute to nation character building. Ecocriticism is the study of the relationship between literature and the physical environment. Greg Garrard traces the development of the movement and explores the concepts that have most occupied ecocritics, including: pollution, wilderness, apocalypse, dwelling, animals, and earth. This paper will answer some questions : (1) how nature is represented in literature? (2) what roles are presented by physical environment in literature, (3) how local wisdom is represented in literature, (4) how metaphors are explored in literature, and (5) what moral teaching is given by literature representing ecological enviroments.

No full textAbstract : -This research is aimed at describing representation of IndonesianChinese‟scultural behavior in the Indonesian novels of post tragegy in 1998. This discussion is conducted using (1) research procedure of sociology of literature, and (2) analysis model of Paul Recoeur‟s hermeneutics that works in three steps of semantic, reflective and existential levels. Data are derived from five Indonesian novelsThe selection of which are based on the purposive sampling technique. The representativeness of the novels and their authors is seen from the viewpoint and context of research object.This research is a descriptive-qualitative one for describing sociocultural phenomena. Data are analyzed based on the characteristics of cultural studies, through the process of identifying, classifying and analyzing data, interpreting and making a conclusion. The research results shows that personally Chinese faced a hard life; and socially they were dominated. Therefore, it can be concluded that: (1) the personal behaviour of Indonesian Chinese is represented through the hard life, (2) social behaviour of Indonesian Chinese is represented through the dominated social life, and (3) cultural behavior is represented through the religious life with many problems.This is say that the cultural behaviour of Indonesian Chinese in Indonesia novels belonging to post tragedy of 1998 is represented through cultural violence.
