Facing problems in the determination of stellar temperatures and gravities: Galactic globular clusters

    Get PDF
We analysed red giant branch stars in 16 Galactic globular clusters, computing their atmospheric parameters both from the photometry and from excitation and ionisation balances. The spectroscopic parameters are lower than the photometric ones and this discrepancy increases with decreasing metallicity, reaching differences of ~350 K in effective temperature and ~1 dex in surface gravity at [Fe/H] ~ -2.5 dex. We demonstrate that the spectroscopic parameters are inconsistent with the position of the stars in the colour-magnitude diagram, providing overly low temperatures and gravities, and predicting that the stars are up to about 2.5 magnitudes brighter than the observed magnitudes. The parameter discrepancy is likely due to inadequacies in the adopted physics; in particular the assumption of a one-dimensional geometry could be the origin of the observed slope between iron abundances and excitation potential that leads to low temperatures. However, the current modelling of 3D/NLTE radiative transfer for giant stars seems to be unable to totally erase this slope. We conclude that the spectroscopic parameters are incorrect for metallicity lower than -1.5 dex and that photometric temperatures and gravities should be adopted for these red giant stars. We provide a simple relation to correct the spectroscopic temperatures in order to put them onto a photometric scale

Constant light element abundances suggest that the extended P1 in NGC 2808 is not a consequence of CNO-cycle nucleosynthesis

Recent photometric results have identified a new population among globular cluster stars. This population, referred to as the 'extended P1', has been suggested to be the manifestation of a new abundance pattern where the initial mass fraction of He changes among cluster stars that share the same CNO values. The current paradigm for the formation of the multiple stellar populations in globular clusters assumes that variations in He are the product of chemical 'enrichment' by the ashes of the CNO-cycle (which changes He and other elements like C, N and O simultaneously). We obtained MIKE@Magellan spectra of six giant stars in NGC 2808, a cluster with one of the strongest examples of the extended P1 population. We provide the first complete characterization of the light elements abundances for the stars along a significant range of the extended P1 photometric group. The stars from our sample appear to be homogeneous in C, N, O, Na, Mg and Al. The lack of a significant change in these products of the CNO-cycle suggests that unlike the rest of the populations identified to date, the photometric changes responsible for the extended P1 feature are a consequence of an alternative mechanism. Our measurements are consistent with the interpretations where the changes of the He mass fraction among these stars could be a consequence of p-p chain nucleosynthesis (which could increase the He in stars without affecting heavier elements). Having said that, direct measurements of He are necessary to conclude if variations of this element are present among extended P1 stars

The iron dispersion of the globular cluster M2, revised

M2 has been claimed to possess three distinct stellar components that are enhanced in iron relative to each other. We use equivalent width measurements from 14 red giant branch stars from which Yong et al. detect a ~0.8 dex wide, trimodal iron distribution to redetermine the metallicity of the cluster. In contrast to Yong et al., which derive atmospheric parameters following only the classical spectroscopic approach, we perform the chemical analysis using three different methods to constrain effective temperatures and surface gravities. When atmospheric parameters are derived spectroscopically, we measure a trimodal metallicity distribution, that well resembles that by Yong et al. We find that the metallicity distribution from Fe II lines strongly differs from the distribution obtained from Fe I features when photometric gravities are adopted. The Fe I distribution mimics the metallicity distribution obtained using spectroscopic parameters, while the Fe II shows the presence of only two stellar groups with metallicity [Fe/H] ≃ -1.5 and -1.1 dex, which are internally homogeneous in iron. This finding, when coupled with the high-resolution photometric evidence, demonstrates that M2 is composed by a dominant population (~99 per cent) homogeneous in iron and a minority component (~1 per cent) enriched in iron with respect to the main cluster population

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

The discovery of an anomalous RGB in M 2

Using UV images taken with the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, we discovered an anomalous sequence in the color-magnitude diagram of M 2. This feature appears as a narrow poor-populated red giant branch, which extends down to the sub giant branch region. We speculate that this new feature could be the extension of the faint component of the split sub giant branch recently discovered by Piotto et al. We identified in our U, V images two CH stars detected in previous studies. These stars, which are both cluster members, fall on this redder sequence, suggesting indeed that the anomalous RGB should have a peculiar chemical pattern. Unfortunately, no additional spectra were obtained for stars in this previously unknown substructure

A comparative high-resolution spectroscopic analysis of in situ and accreted globular clusters

Globular clusters (GCs) are extremely intriguing systems that help in reconstructing the assembly of the Milky Way via the characterisation of their chemo-chrono-dynamical properties. In this study, we use high-resolution spectroscopic archival data from UVES and UVES-FLAMES at the VLT to compare the chemistry of GCs dynamically tagged as either Galactic (NGC 6218, NGC 6522, and NGC 6626) or accreted from distinct merger events (NGC 362 and NGC 1261 from Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus, and Ruprecht 106 from the Helmi Streams) in the metallicity regime where abundance patterns of field stars with different origin effectively separate (-1.3 ≤ [Fe/H] ≤ -1.0 dex). We find remarkable similarities in the abundances of the two Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus GCs across all chemical elements. They both display depletion in the α-elements (Mg, Si and Ca) and statistically significant differences in Zn and Eu compared to in situ GCs. Additionally, we confirm that Ruprecht 106 exhibits a completely different chemical makeup from the other target clusters, being underabundant in all chemical elements. This demonstrates that when high precision is achieved, the abundances of certain chemical elements can not only efficiently separate in situ from accreted GCs, but can also distinguish among GCs born in different progenitor galaxies. In the end, we investigate the possible origin of the chemical peculiarity of Ruprecht 106. Given that its abundances do not match the chemical patterns of the field stars associated with its most likely parent galaxy (i.e. the Helmi Streams), being depleted in the abundances of α-elements in particular, we believe Ruprecht 106 to originate from a less massive galaxy compared to the progenitor of the Helmi Streams

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

The true nature of HE 0057-5959, the most metal-poor, Li-rich star

The Li-rich stars are a class of rare objects with a surface lithium abundance, A(Li), that exceeds that of other stars in the same evolutionary stage. The origin of these stars is still debated, and valuable routes to look at include the Cameron-Fowler mechanism, a mass-Transfer process in a binary system, or the engulfment of rocky planets or brown dwarfs.
