Does salinity modify anatomy and biochemistry of Olea europaea L. fruit during ripening?

    No full text
The effect of salinity on physiology of olive (Olea europaea L.) fruits was studied using a salt-sensitive genotype (Leccino cv.) able to translocate sodium to the aerial part. Plants were treated with 0 and 60 mM NaCl for 49 days starting from the beginning of pit hardening to veraison. The effects of salt exposure were studied classifying olive in two Maturation Groups: MG1olives from green skin to <50% purple skin; MG2olives with purple skin â¥50%. Plants treated with NaCl present a significant reduction of shoot elongation after 35, 42 and 49 days of salt treatment (15%, 18% and 24%, respectively). Na accumulation occurs in fruit flesh depending on the MG: 559 mg kgâ1in MG1and 397 mg kgâ1in MG2. In general, NaCl does not negatively affect fruit yield parameters while induce an increment of total phenols (58%) and DPPH scavenging activity (15%) in MG1in comparison with control. Cryo-SEM observations of freeze-fractured fruits revealed that salt treatment induce an increment of cells area and a thickening of cuticle, epidermis, hypodermis and outer mesocarp, that could be considered useful to protect fruits against other biotic and abiotic stress

Samuele R. Bacchiocchi was a Seventh-day Adventist author and theologian best known for his work on the Sabbath in Christianity, particularly in the historical work "From Sabbath to Sunday," based on his doctoral thesis from the Pontifical Gregorian University. Bacchiocchi defended the validity of the Feasts of the Lord, situated in Leviticus 23. He wrote two books on the subject. He was also known within the Seventh-day Adventist church for his opposition to rock and contemporary Christian music, jewelry, the celebration of Christmas and Easter, certain dress standards, and alcohol. The objective of this work is to report an assessment of the change in vehicle flows and in air quality of a specific study area in the north of Italy, comparing the periods February–May 2020 and February–May 2019. Circulating vehicles have been measured at nine characteristic points of the local road network of the city of Reggio Emilia (Italy), while atmospheric pollutant concentrations have been analysed using data extracted from the regional air quality monitoring network. The results highlight a rapid decline in the number of vehicles circulating in 2020 (with values of up to −82%). This has contributed to a reduction in air concentrations of pollutants, in particular for NO2 and CO (over 30% and over 22%, respectively). On the other hand, O3 has increased (by about +13%), but this is expected. Finally, the particulate matter grew (about 30%), with a behaviour similar to the whole regional territory. The empirical findings of this study provide some indications and useful information to assist in understanding the effects of traffic blocking in urban areas on air quality

    No full text
The aim of this work is to compare the Greek tragedy Alcesti by Euripides, performed on stage in 438 B.C., with the Alcesti di Samuele by Alberto Savinio, first performed at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan in 1950. The first chapter provides biographical information about the Author. The second chapter collects and describes the works about the character of Alcesti published by Savinio on newspapers and examines the sources of the play. The third chapter is about the description of the two works. The fourth chapter contains their analysis and comparison. In the last chapter some considerations about metatheatre and about the plot, the characters and the main themes of the Alcesti di Samuele are carried out

Spatial modeling of pyroclastic cover deposit thickness (depth to bedrock) in peri-volcanic areas of Campania (southern Italy)

In this study, the main focus is the application and improvement of four empirical models, which account for the pyroclastic cover deposit thickness (PCDT) spatial distribution with respect to the bedrock surrounding the Somma-Vesuvius volcano(Campania, southern Italy). Three models, which are already known in the literature, link the depth to bedrock to the morphologicalfeatures of a slope. An original model called SEPT (slope exponential pyroclastic thickness) is presented in this manuscript and combinesthe initial total thickness of ash-fall pyroclastic cover with the slope gradient. All models were applied and validated using field measurements derived from this and preceding studies in the study area. The main finding is that the spatial distribution of the depth to bedrock in mountainous peri-volcanic areas mainly depends on the initial thickness of air-fallen material at a given position and slope angle. These findings allowed for the recognition of an ash-fall pyroclastic depositional environment that is characterized by different processes from those existing in other geomorphological frameworks and in which the soil thickness along the slopes is controlled by the weathering of bedrock and the formation of soilin situ. Finally, in this research, a reliable approach is proposed that is also applicable to other peri-volcanic areas of the world to assess the spatial distribution of the depth to bedrock, which is a fundamentally important parameter in distributed geomorphologic and hydrologic modeling
