    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Enantioselective total synthesis of (-)-microcarpalide

    The enantioselective total synthesis of the actin-targeting metabolite (-)-microcarpalide is described. Key steps include ring-closing metathesis (RCM) for the final construction of the 10-membered lactone framework and stereoselective homologation of boronic esters for the insertion of all stereocentres with the desired absolute configuration. In particular, the acidic fragment was prepared in seven steps from a suitable chiral bromomethane boronate by means of two sequential stereoselective homologations to install the two stereocentres with the correct final R stereochemistry, employing (-)-pinanediol as the chiral director. Subsequent elaboration to the required C-7 backbone entailed nucleophilic displacement with a vinyl Grignard reagent, oxidative cleavage of the boronic scaffold and protection-deprotection manipulations. Interestingly, when the tribenzyloxy diene ester resulting from DCC-mediated coupling of the two key synthons was subjected to RCM in the presence of Grubbs ́ catalyst, the reaction proceeded stereoselectively to yield the desired trans oxecin-2-one, albeit with poor conversion

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Nanomolar inhibitors of AmpC beta-lactamase

    beta-lactamases are the most widespread resistance mechanism to beta-lactam antibiotics, such as the penicillins and the cephalosporins. In an effort to combat these enzymes, a combination of stereoselective organic synthesis, enzymology, microbiology, and X-ray crystallography was used to design and evaluate new carboxyphenyl-glycylboronic acid transition-state analogue inhibitors of the class C beta-lactamase AmpC. The new compounds improve inhibition by over 2 orders of magnitude compared to analogous glycylboronic acids, with K-1 values as low as 1 nM. On the basis of the differential binding of different analogues, the introduced carboxylate alone contributes about 2.1 kcal/mol in affinity. This carboxylate corresponds to the ubiquitous C3(4)'carboxylate of beta-lactams, and this energy represents the first thermodynamic measurement of the importance of this group in molecular recognition by class C beta-lactamases. The structures of AmpC in complex with two of these inhibitors were determined by X-ray crystallography at 1.72 and 1.83 Angstrom resolution. These structures suggest a structural basis for the high affinity of the new compounds and provide templates for further design. The highest affinity inhibitor was 5 orders of magnitude more selective for AmpC than for characteristic serine proteases, such as chymotrypsin. This inhibitor reversed the resistance of clinical pathogens to the third generation cephalosporin ceftazidime; it may serve as a lead compound for drug discovery to combat bacterial resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics
