Overview of the CATHARE Use at ENEA for Innovative Safety Systems

    No full text
Within the framework of the CATHARE-NEPTUNE 2004 International Seminar, held inGrenoble on May 10,11,12 2004, the foreign partners of CUC (CATHARE Users Club) hadan unique opportunity to present their activities with the most recent versions of CATHARE.ENEA has been partner of CUC since 1992 through a collaboration agreement at first with IPSN then with IRSN (Accord Logiciel CATHARE). The activities on the CATHARE code have essentially concerned the safety of Advanced Light Water Reactor and they have been in charge of the FIS-NUC (previously ERG-SIEC) section in Bologna. Such activities have been mostly carryed out in the frame of international projects partially financed by the N and V European Framework Programs (BWRCA , IWCRS , DEEPSSI).In view of a new agreement for the utilization of the most recent CATHARE version (2v2.5) for the study of N Generation Reactors, FIS-NUC took the opportunity to present the activities performed during the two last years on advanced safety systems for ALWR

Cystic pancreatic lesions: MR imaging findings and management

    Get PDF
Cystic pancreatic lesions (CPLs) are frequently casual findings in radiological examinations performed for other reasons in patients with unrelated symptoms. As they require different management according to their histological nature, differential diagnosis is essential. Radiologist plays a key role in the diagnosis and management of these lesions as imaging is able to correctly characterize most of them and thus address to a correct management. The first step for a correct characterization is to look for a communication between the CPLs and the main pancreatic duct, and then, it is essential to evaluate the morphology of the lesions. Age, sex and a history of previous pancreatic pathologies are important information to be used in the differential diagnosis. As some CPLs with different pathologic backgrounds can show the same morphological findings, differential diagnosis can be difficult, and thus, the final diagnosis can require other techniques, such as endoscopic ultrasound, endoscopic ultrasound-fine needle aspiration and endoscopic ultrasound-through the needle biopsy, and multidisciplinary management is important for a correct management

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Fibrocystic liver disease: Novel concepts and translational perspectives

Fibrocystic liver diseases (FLDs) comprise a heterogeneous group of rare diseases of the biliary tree, having in common an abnormal development of the embryonic ductal plate caused by geneticallydetermined dysfunctions of proteins expressed in the primary cilia of cholangiocytes (and therefore grouped among the "ciliopathies"). The ductal dysgenesis may affect the biliary system at multiple levels, from the small intrahepatic bile ducts [congenital hepatic fibrosis (CHF)], to the larger intrahepatic bile ducts [Caroli disease (CD), or Caroli syndrome (CS), when CD coexists with CHF], leading to biliary microhamartomas and segmental bile duct dilations. Biliary changes are accompanied by progressive deposition of abundant peribiliary fibrosis. Peribiliary fibrosis and biliary cysts are the fundamental lesions of FLDs and are responsible for the main clinical manifestations, such as portal hypertension, recurrent cholangitis, cholestasis, sepsis and eventually cholangiocarcinoma. Furthermore, FLDs often associate with a spectrum of disorders affecting primarily the kidney. Among them, the autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) is the most frequent, and the renal function impairment is central in disease progression. CHF, CD/CS, and ARPKD are caused by a number of mutations in polycystic kidney hepatic disease 1 (PKHD1), a gene that encodes for fibrocystin/polyductin, a protein of unclear function, but supposedly involved in planar cell polarity and other fundamental cell functions. Targeted medical therapy is not available yet and thus the current treatment aims at controlling the complications. Interventional radiology or surgical treatments, including liver transplantation, are used in selected cases

Tumors of the Spine in Children

    No full text
In children, tumors of the spine are much rarer than intracranial tumors. They are classified into intramedullary, intradural-extramedullary, and extradural tumors. Magnetic resonance imaging provides crucial information regarding the extent, location, and internal structure of the mass, thus critically narrowing the differential diagnosis and guiding surgery. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. Radiology-based diagnosis of fungal pulmonary infections in high-risk hematology patients: are we making progress?

Purpose of reviewIn patients with hematological malignancies, high-resolution computed tomography (CT) is the recommended imaging approach for diagnosis, staging and monitoring of invasive fungal disease (IFD) but lacks specificity. We examined the status of current imaging modalities for IFD and possibilities for more effective applications of current technology for improving the specificity of IFD diagnosis.Recent findingsAlthough CT imaging recommendations for IFD are largely unchanged in the last 20 years, improvements in CT scanner technology and image processing algorithms now allow for technically adequate examinations at much lower radiation doses. CT pulmonary angiography can improve both the sensitivity and specificity of CT imaging for angioinvasive molds in both neutropenic and nonneutropenic patients, through detection of the vessel occlusion sign (VOS). MRI-based approaches also show promise not only for early detection of small nodules and alveolar hemorrhage but can also be used to detect pulmonary vascular occlusion without radiation and iodinated contrast media. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET/computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) is increasingly used to monitor long-term treatment response for IFD, but could become a more powerful diagnostic tool with the development of fungal-specific antibody imaging tracers.High-risk hematology patients have a considerable medical need for more sensitive and specific imaging approaches for IFD. This need may be addressable, in part, by better exploiting recent progress in CT/MRI imaging technology and algorithms to improve the specificity of radiological diagnosis for IFD

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
