Synthesis of new 2,3-diaryl-1,3-thiazolidin-4-ones as anti-HIV agents

    No full text
Several 2,3-diaryl-1,3-thiazolidin-4-ones were synthesized and evaluated as anti-HIV agents. The results of the in vitro tests showed that some of them were highly effective inhibitors of HIV-1 replication at 30–50 nM concentrations with minimal cytotoxicity, thereby acting as non-nucleoside HIV-1 reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs)

2-(2,6-dihalophenyl)-3-(pyrimidin-2-yl)-1,3-thiazolidin-4-ones as nonnucleoside HIV-1 reverse trascriptase inhibitors

Several 1,3-thiazolidin-4-ones bearing a 2,6-dihalophenyl group at C-2 and a substituted pyrimidin-2-yl ring at the N-3 were synthesised and evaluated as anti-HIV agents. The results of the in vitro tests showed that some of them were highly effective inhibitors of human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) replication at 10–40 nM concentrations with minimal cytotoxicity. Structure–activity relationship studies revealed that the nature of the substituents at the 2 and 3 positions of the thiazolidinone nucleus had a significant impact on the in vitro anti-HIV activity of this class of potent antiretroviral agents. The compounds had significantly reduced activity against the characteristic NNRTI-resistant virus mutants (bearing the K103N and Y181C RT mutations), thereby acting as non-nucleoside HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) inhibitors (NNRTIs)

Màster Oficial en Construcció i Representació d'Identitats Culturals (CRIC), Facultat de Filologia, Universitat de Barcelona, Any: 2010, Director: Dr. Enric MonforteThis paper analyzes the different female voices in Caryl Churchill’s "Top Girls". Chapter I begins with an overview of the present-day attitude of women toward feminism. Next, it defines some of the various types of feminisms that have appeared in the Anglo-American world. Next, it focuses on the contradiction between the feminist ideal of equality and the reality of the differences between women. Chapter II begins with a brief description of the socio-political and economic context of the play. Next, it examines the female voices as they appear and communicate in the play. Further on, it inquires about the possibility for women to speak with a unified voice. Finally, the conclusions point out Churchill’s pluralist approach to feminism

The Romantic Garden of the 19th Century as Urban Public Space: Monforte Gardens in Valencia

[EN] Romanticism and eclecticism marked the way of the arts for much of the 19th century. Garden architecture, is one of the arts that exemplifies these precepts. On the one hand, the prevailing historicism generalized the interest for the styles of the past. In the case of gardens, Italian Renaissance, French Baroque and English Picturesque, were the references used by architects and gardeners in the 19th century designs. On the other hand, social changes of the 19th century generated new urban needs, such as urban parks of various scales. Some private gardens eventually became part of the city as a public space for citizen enjoyment. The genesis and subsequent evolution of Monforte Gardens in Valencia, exemplify and highlight all these aesthetic, historical and social considerations.[ES] El pensamiento romántico y la estética ecléctica marcaron las directrices de las artes durante buena parte del siglo XIX. En Valencia, la génesis y posterior evolución de los Jardines de Monforte, ejemplifican y ponen en evidencia todas estas consideraciones estéticas, históricas y sociales.Gómez Gil, AM.; García-Domenech, S. Background: Patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and a history of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia are at high risk for relapse if they are not given secondary prophylaxis. Whether secondary prophylaxis against P. carinii pneumonia can be safely discontinued in patients who have a response to highly active antiretroviral therapy is not known. Methods: We analyzed episodes of recurrent P. carinii pneumonia in 325 HIV-infected patients (275 men and 50 women) in eight prospective European cohorts. Between October 1996 and January 2000, these patients discontinued secondary prophylaxis during treatment with at least three anti-HIV drugs after they had at least one peripheral-blood CD4 cell count of more than 200 cells per cubic millimeter. Results: Secondary prophylaxis was discontinued at a median CD4 cell count of 350 per cubic millimeter; the median nadir CD4 cell count had been 50 per cubic millimeter. The median duration of the increase in the CD4 cell count to more than 200 per cubic millimeter after discontinuation of secondary prophylaxis was 11 months. The median follow-up period after discontinuation of secondary prophylaxis was 13 months, yielding a total of 374 person-years of follow-up; for 355 of these person-years, CD4 cell counts remained at or above 200 per cubic millimeter. No cases of recurrent P. carinii pneumonia were diagnosed during this period; the incidence was thus 0 per 100 patient-years (99 percent confidence interval, 0 to 1.2 per 100 patient-years, on the basis of the entire follow-up period, and 0 to 1.3 per 100 patient-years, on the basis of the follow-up period during which CD4 cell counts remained at or above 200 per cubic millimeter). Conclusions: It is safe to discontinue secondary prophylaxis against P. carinii pneumonia in patients with HIV infection who have an immunologic response to highly active antiretroviral therapy

    I Think I Am Philip K. Dick

For years, noted writer Laurence A. Rickels often found himself compared to novelist Philip K. Dickthough in fact Rickels had never read any of the science fiction writers work. When he finally read his first Philip K. Dick novel, while researching for his recent book The Devil Notebooks , it prompted a prolonged immersion in Dicks writing as well as a recognition of Rickelss own long-documented intellectual pursuits. The result of this engagement is I Think I Am: Philip K. Dick , a profound thought experiment that charts the wide relevance of the pulp sci-fi author and paranoid visionary. I Think I Am: Philip K. Dick explores the science fiction authors meditations on psychic reality and psychosis, Christian mysticism, Eastern religion, and modern spiritualism. Covering all of Dicks science fiction, Rickels corrects the lack of scholarly interest in the legendary Californian author and, ultimately, makes a compelling case for the philosophical and psychoanalytic significance of Philip K. Dicks popular and influential science fiction.Intro -- Contents -- Introjection -- Part I -- Endopsychic Allegories -- Schreber Guardian -- Belief System Surveillance -- Part II -- Deeper Problems -- Veil of Tears -- Go West -- Dick Manfred -- Timing -- Glimmung -- Part III -- Spiritualism Analogy -- Imitating the Dead -- Indexical Layer -- Ilse -- Hammers and Things -- Crucifictions -- Over There -- Martyrology -- Can't Live, Can't Live -- Lola -- Umwelt, Mitwelt, and Eigenwelt -- Outer Race -- The German Introject -- Part IV -- Materialism, Idealism, and Cybernetics -- Startling Stories -- A Couple of Years -- Android Empathy -- Homunculus and Robot -- ALL OF YOU ARE DEAD.
