No full textThe more autofiction is talked about, the more its identity and status are taken as a given. In English-language criticism especially, which has now jumped on the autofictional bandwagon, the need to define homegrown autofiction is conspicuously eluded, with scholars preferring to gesture towards an impenetrable undergrowth of imported theories whose relevance often remains uninterrogated. How can scholars of English-language literature conquer the consequent habit of merely engaging with autofiction as a “liminal position” (Worthington 2018), thus approaching it only in negative or hybrid terms? How does the growing corpus of autofiction in English serve to enhance the notion and foster its development, as well as opportunistically benefit from its heritage? Building on a wide range of autofictional texts by English-speaking authors, the aim of this work is to show how autofiction may be described a spectrum that ranges from works that mostly problematise genre to works that mostly problematise ontology. Cutting across these two polarities, moreover, is a tendency towards greater or lesser self-consciousness, the outcome of a move away from postmodernism that, while not dismissing its metafictional awareness of literary manipulation, repurposes it to reconstructive, sincerity-oriented ends. Finally, a preoccupation with the aesthetics of autofiction also paves the way for an engagement with the ethics of contemporary authorship and the status of truth, allowing for more nuanced debates on the specificity of each individual work of autofiction and its communicative function.Più si scrive di autofiction e più il suo status letterario e le sue peculiarità formali vengono dati per scontato. Nella critica accademica anglofona in particolare, dove il dibattito sull'autofiction ha ora assunto dimensioni considerevoli, la necessità di definire la forma assunta dal fenomeno quando coinvolge autori che scrivono in inglese viene abilmente elusa, dando prova di un atteggiamento di acritica sudditanza a una giungla di teorie di importazione la cui pertinenza è solo raramente messa in dubbio. Come potersi liberare, dunque, dall'abitudine di interpretare la letteratura autofinzionale anglofona come una "posizione liminale" (Worthington 2018), un approccio che porta a leggerla esclusivamente in termini negativi o ibridi? Come possiamo avvalerci del sempre più nutrito corpus di autofinzioni redatte in inglese per raffinare il concetto e favorirne lo sviluppo, oltre che per sfruttare opportunisticamente la tradizione che ha generato? Facendo leva su un'ampia gamma di testi autofinzionali di autori anglofoni, l'obiettivo del presente lavoro è quello di illustrare come l'autofiction possa essere descritta come uno spettro che abbraccia sia opere con un'enfasi sulla problematicità generica sia opere con un'enfasi su quella ontologica. A queste due polarità si aggiunge poi un altro asse che le attraversa trasversalmente e che misura il grado di autoconsapevolezza dell'opera stessa, legato a una presa di distanza dal postmodernismo che, pur senza abbandonarne la consapevolezza metafinzionale sulla manipolazione letteraria, la ricicla per obiettivi diversi, come una ricostruzione post-postmoderna o un'aspirazione di sincerità. Da ultimo, l'attenzione per l'estetica autofinzionale favorisce a sua volta un'analisi più approfondita dell'etica dell'autorialità e dello status della verità nel contesto contemporaneo, fornendo strumenti adatti a un esame dei tratti specifici di ciascuna opera autofinzionale presa individualmente e della sua funzione comunicativa
