Refinement of macaque synteny arrangement with respect to the official rheMac2 macaque sequence assembly
We have compared the synteny block organization of the official macaque genome sequence assembly (Jan. 2006; rheMac2) with an independent assembly that used a molecular cytogenetic approach. The mapping of four synteny segments, ranging in size from 4 Mb to 24 Mb, was found to be inconsistent between the two datasets. We specifically investigated these discrepancies by appropriate co-hybridization FISH experiments with validated reference probes located outside the area under study. We found that in the macaque rheMac2 release three synteny segments were wrongly mapped and one segment was incorrectly oriented
Human chromosome 16 conservation in primates
A study was made of the organization of the chromosome orthologous to HSA16 in primates using a panel of 8 BAC probes spanning human chromosome 16. The probes were used in FISH experiments on great apes and on representatives of the Old World monkeys, New World monkeys, and lemurs. The domestic cat was used as an outgroup. The results indicate that 16p and 16q were separate chromosomes in a primate ancestor. They fused in a Catarrhini ancestor giving rise to the present day form found in HSA, great apes, and Old World monkeys. Several rearrangements were found in New World monkeys
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Refinement of a Chimpanzee Pericentric Inversion Breakpoint to a Site of Segmental Duplication
BACKGROUND: Pericentric inversions are the most common euchromatic chromosomal differences among humans and the great apes. The human and chimpanzee karyotype differs by nine such events, in addition to several constitutive heterochromatic increases and one chromosomal fusion event. Reproductive isolation and subsequent speciation are thought to be the potential result of pericentric inversions, as reproductive boundaries form as a result of hybrid sterility. RESULTS: Here we employed a comparative fluorescence in situ hybridization approach, using probes selected from a combination of physical mapping, genomic sequence, and segmental duplication analyses to narrow the breakpoint interval of a pericentric inversion in chimpanzee involving the orthologous human 15q11-q13 region. We have refined the inversion breakpoint of this chimpanzee-specific rearrangement to a 600 kilobase (kb) interval of the human genome consisting of entirely duplicated material. Detailed analysis of the underlying sequence indicated that this region comprises multiple segmental duplications, including a previously characterized duplication of the alpha7 neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunit gene (CHRNA7) in 15q13.3 and several Golgin-linked-to-PML, or LCR15, duplications. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that, on the basis of experimental data excluding the CHRNA7 duplicon as the site of inversion, and sequence analysis of regional duplications, the most likely rearrangement site is within a GLP/LCR15 duplicon. This study further exemplifies the genomic plasticity due to the presence of segmental duplications and highlights their importance for a complete understanding of genome evolution
A satellite-like sequence, representing a “clone gap” in the human genome, was likely involved in the seeding of a novel centromere in macaque
Although the human genome sequence is generally considered "finished", the latest assembly (NCBI Build 36.1) still presents a number of gaps. Some of them are defined as "clone gaps" because they separate neighboring contigs. Evolutionary new centromeres are centromeres that repositioned along the chromosome, without marker order variation, during evolution. We have found that one human "clone gap" at 18q21.2 corresponds to an evolutionary new centromere in Old World Monkeys (OWM). The partially sequenced gap revealed a satellite-like structure. DNA stretches of the same satellite were found in the macaque (flanking the chromosome 18 centromere) and in the marmoset (New World Monkey), which was used as an outgroup. These findings strongly suggested that the repeat was present at the time of novel centromere seeding in OWM ancestor. We have provided, therefore, the first instance of a specific sequence hypothesized to have played a role in triggering the emergence of an evolutionary new centromere
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
