    Entirely automated glucose monitoring system based on a flow injection analysis apparatus

    A process for waste whey treatment, fully based on membrane technologies, has been studied and developed in a pilot plant scale, with the aim to recover chemicals from farm wastes (fats, whey proteins, lactose, salts and water). This process, described in its essential steps, includes a hollow fiber membrane reactor for the hydrolysis of lactose with an immobilized β-galactosidase. The bioreactor performances are studied, in a lab scale, with an entirely automated glucose monitoring system based on a flow injection analysis apparatus. The monitoring system shows interesting performances concerning signal stability, extended linearity (up to 150 mmol l-1) and long term monitoring (up to 3 months without manual operations). La ricostruzione della vicenda, condotta collegialmente tra medici legali ed un ingegnere navale, consentiva di ipotizzare che il pescatore fosse rimasto vittima di un malore poco dopo la partenza e che, successivamente al naufragio, il corpo, oltre che agli effetti del violento impatto contro gli scogli, fosse stato sottoposto all’azione lesiva combinata dell’elica del natante e delle cime rimaste avvolte nelle pale dell’elica stessa

    Folding propensity and biological activity of peptides: the effect of a single stereochemical isomerization in structural and mechanical properties of bombinins in aqueous solution

    Folding propensities of bombinins H2 and H4, two members of amphibian bombinins H, a family of 17-20 residue alpha-helical peptides, have been investigated by means of circular dichroism (CD) measurements and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The two peptides, with primary structure IIGPVLGLVGSALGGLLKKI-NH2 and differing only for the configuration of the second aminoacid (an L-isoleucine in H2 and a D-alloisoleucine in H4) behave rather differently in solution. In particular both CD measurements and MD simulations indicate that bombinin H2 shows a markedly higher tendency to fold. From a careful inspection of AID trajectories it emerges that the stereochemical isomerization mutation of residue 2 to D-alloisoleucine in H4 peptide, drastically decreases its ability to form intrapeptide contacts. MD simulations also indicate that the conformational sampling in both systems derives from a subtle combination of energetic and entropic effects both involving the peptide itself and the solvent. The present results have been finally paralleled with preliminary information on bombinins H2 and H4 biological activity, i.e. interaction with membrane, supporting the hypothesis of an "already folded" conformation in water rather than interfacial folding tenet

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Structure-function relationships of temporins, small anti-microbial peptides from amphibian skin

    Temporins, antimicrobial peptides of 10±13 residues, were isolated from secretions of Rana temporaria [Simmaco, M., Mignogna, G., Canofeni, S., Miele, R., Mangoni, M.L. & Barra, D. (1996) Eur. J. Biochem. 242, 788±792]. These molecules are specific to this amphibian species, which is also able to secrete on its skin other antimicrobial peptides similar to those found in different Rana species. The effect of temporins A, B and D (13 residues, net charge +2), and H (10 residues, net charge +1 and +2, respectively) against both artificial membranes of differing lipid composition and bacteria has been investigated in order to gain insight into their mechanisms of action. The results indicate that: the lytic activity of temporins is not greatly affected by the membrane composition; temporins A and B allow the leakage of large-size molecules from the bacterial cells; temporin H renders both the outer and inner membrane of bacteria permeable to hydrophobic substances of low molecular mass; and temporin D, although devoid of antibacterial activity, has a cytotoxic effect on erythrocytes. The results allow important conclusions to be drawn about the minimal structural requirements for lytic efficiency and specificity of temporins

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
