    Neglected cultivars for the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region (East Georgia): ampelography, phenology, and agro-climatology

    Georgia is an important source of grapevine intra-specific variability for viticulture. This biodiversity can be a suitable tool to face the challenge of climate change. Nevertheless, it is important to take into account the interaction between the interest genotype and the local environment, whose climate is changing due to global heating. In this work, we put in relation the phenotypic behavior of some neglected Georgian cultivars (‘Tabidziseuli’, ‘Daisi’, ‘Qvelouri’, ‘Bazaleturi Colikouri’) from the Mtskheta-Mtianeti Georgian region to the agro-climatology of the region itself. The phenological phases and the vegetation length of these four grape varieties were described, as well as their principal ampelographic characters. The impact of global heating on the agro-climatology of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region has also been established, by comparing the sum of active temperatures (>10°C) of multi-years (1948-2017) with those calculated for the future scenario (2020-2050, temperature increase by 2°C). Based on this comparison, three agro-climatic zones have been confirmed within the region: dry subtropical, mountain and high mountain. The scenario of temperature increase by 2°C in the next three decades will cause the sum of active temperatures to reach 3900-4000°C in the dry subtropical zone, 3400-3500°C in the mountain zone and 1900-2000°C in the high mountain zone. Considering the vegetation length of the cultivars analyzed, it can be expected a shift of the most suitable sites for viticulture from the dry subtropical zone to the mountain area. High mountain seems not to be suitable for the cultivation of the studied cultivars. Given this environmental variability within the region, the increase in temperature will not suppress viticulture in Mtskheta-Mtianeti, if the real temperature does not exceed the level predicted by scenario

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Epicuticular waxes: A natural packaging to deal with sunburn browning in white grapes

    Epicuticular waxes on grapevine berry cuticle provide protection of the inner tissues from biotic and abiotic stresses. However, little is known about their role in protecting grape epidermis from sunburn damages. This study investigated the effect of wax disruption in ten sun-exposed white skinned Vitis vinifera L. varieties. Browning symptom appearance was quantified one day and four days after wax disruption. It was also examined the content of the main photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and carotenoids) and total phenolics in the skins four days after the treatment. The disruption of epicuticular waxes promoted grape sunburn: the skin browning intensity increased from 39.8 to 67.1 after one day and four days from the treatment, respectively. The loss of green color after wax disruption resulted from the degradation of chlorophyll a, since its content in the treated berries (9.01 μg g−1 of skin) was lower than that in the control berries (17.16 μg g−1) after four days from the treatment. The co-occurrence of wax disruption in a sunlight excess environment caused also the photo-oxidation of carotenoids, which were higher in control berries (19.86 μg g−1) than in the treated berries (14.51 μg g−1). The browning intensity and the difference in the total phenolics of the skins between treated and control berries were significantly correlated, suggesting that the polymerization of phenolics into brown compounds after wax disruption could further enhance browning symptoms. Therefore, epicuticular waxes could be considered as an important natural coating for grapes, providing defence against water loss and pest or pathogen attacks, but also effectively limiting sunburn browning and maintaining quality for both wine grapes and table grapes

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Grapevine red blotch virus is sporadically present in a germplasm collection in Northern Italy

    Limited information is available on the distribution of grapevine red blotch virus (GRBV) in grape-growing regions outside North America. In this study, the presence of GRBV was investigated in 596 grapevine samples coming from different sources in Northern Italy, including rootstock and table grape accessions from ampelographic collections, and commercial varieties with red blotch-like symptoms. Only ‘Queen’ and ‘Incrocio Dalmasso VIII-5’ accessions, collected from the CREA-Viticulture and Enology repository of table grape varieties, tested positive for GRBV. Sequencing of fragments from replication and coat protein genes revealed that the two accessions were infected with GRBV isolates belonging to two distinct lineages. While the American origin of ‘Queen’ could explain the GRBV presence in this accession, the viral infection of the Italian ‘Incrocio Dalmasso VIII-5’ remains an unsolved mystery

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
