Abstract Background The ependyma, the lining providing a protective barrier and filtration system separating brain parenchyma from cerebrospinal fluid, is still inadequately understood in humans. In this study we aimed to define, by morphological and immunohistochemical methods, the sequence of developmental steps of the human ependyma in the brainstem (ventricular ependyma) and thoracic spinal cord (central canal ependyma) of a large sample of fetal and infant death victims, aged from 17 gestational weeks to 8 postnatal months. Additionally, we investigated a possible link between alterations of this structure, sudden unexplained fetal and infant death and maternal smoking. Results Our results demonstrate that in early fetal life the human ependyma shows a pseudostratified cytoarchitecture including many tanycytes and ciliated cells together with numerous apoptotic and reactive astrocytes in the subependymal layer. The ependyma is fully differentiated, with a monolayer of uniform cells, after 32 to 34 gestational weeks. We observed a wide spectrum of ependymal pathological changes in sudden death victims, such as desquamation, clusters of ependymal cells in the subventricular zone, radial glial cells, and the unusual presence of neurons within and over the ependymal lining. These alterations were significantly related to maternal smoking in pregnancy. Conclusions We conclude that in smoking mothers, nicotine and its derivatives easily reach the cerebrospinal fluid in the fetus, immediately causing ependymal damage. Consequently, we suggest that the ependyma should be examined in-depth first in victims of sudden fetal or infant death with mothers who smoke.</p

According to OECD reports, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) make up the vast majority of Italian businesses, employing almost 80% of the workforce in industry and services and generating around two-thirds of turnover and value-added. In this scenario, entrepreneurship through acquisition models that target small enterprises like Search Funds becomes of great interest, both from an academic standpoint and from a business one. The first section of this thesis will be dedicated to presenting the Search Fund model in all its nuances, leveraging on insights coming from the most knowledgeable sources in the field. The second section will describe the framework, the methodologies and the results of a real-world search, conducted by the thesis’ author, for a Search Fund based in Veneto. The search started from a broad sample of privately held companies based in the Veneto region in Northern Italy and led to the identification of fifteen potential target companies as well as one hundred and fifty comparable companies, ten for each potential target. The one hundred and sixty-five companies were then analyzed in depth via well-known business measures, KPIs and statistical methodologies with the aim of providing significant results to help the decision-making process of the Search Fund principals

On-chip integration of Si/SiGe-based quantum dots and switched-capacitor circuits

Solid-state qubits integrated on semiconductor substrates currently require at least one wire from every qubit to the control electronics, leading to a so-called wiring bottleneck for scaling. Demultiplexing via on-chip circuitry offers an effective strategy to overcome this bottleneck. In the case of gate-defined quantum dot arrays, specific static voltages need to be applied to many gates simultaneously to realize electron confinement. When a charge-locking structure is placed between the quantum device and the demultiplexer, the voltage can be maintained locally. In this study, we implement a switched-capacitor circuit for charge-locking and use it to float the plunger gate of a single quantum dot. Parallel plate capacitors, transistors, and quantum dot devices are monolithically fabricated on a Si/SiGe-based substrate to avoid complex off-chip routing. We experimentally study the effects of the capacitor and transistor size on the voltage accuracy of the floating node. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the electrochemical potential of the quantum dot can follow a 100 Hz pulse signal while the dot is partially floating, which is essential for applying this strategy in qubit experiments. A Scalable Cryo-CMOS 2-to-20GHz Digitally Intensive Controller for 4×32 Frequency Multiplexed Spin Qubits/Transmons in 22nm FinFET Technology for Quantum Computers

Quantum computers (QC), comprising qubits and a classical controller, can provide exponential speed-up in solving certain problems. Among solid-state qubits, transmons and spin-qubits are the most promising, operating « 1K. A qubit can be implemented in a physical system with two distinct energy levels representing the |0) and |1) states, e.g. the up and down spin states of an electron. The qubit states can be manipulated with microwave pulses, whose frequency f matches the energy level spacing E = hf (Fig. 19.1.1). For transmons, f 6GHz, for spin qubits f20GHz, with the desire to lower it in the future. Qubit operations can be represented as rotations in the Bloch sphere. The rotation axis is set by the phase of the microwave signal relative to the qubit phase, which must be tracked for coherent operations. The pulse amplitude and duration determine the rotation angle. A π-rotation is typically obtained using a 50ns Gaussian pulse for transmons and a 500ns rectangular pulse for spin qubits with powers of -60dBm and -45dBm, respectively.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.OLD QCD/Charbon LabQCD/Vandersypen LabQCD/Scappucci LabQCD/Veldhorst LabQN/Vandersypen LabElectronics(OLD)Applied Quantum Architecture

CMOS-based cryogenic control of silicon quantum circuits

    No full text
The most promising quantum algorithms require quantum processors that host millions of quantum bits when targeting practical applications1. A key challenge towards large-scale quantum computation is the interconnect complexity. In current solid-state qubit implementations, an important interconnect bottleneck appears between the quantum chip in a dilution refrigerator and the room-temperature electronics. Advanced lithography supports the fabrication of both control electronics and qubits in silicon using technology compatible with complementary metal oxide semiconductors (CMOS)2. When the electronics are designed to operate at cryogenic temperatures, they can ultimately be integrated with the qubits on the same die or package, overcoming the ‘wiring bottleneck’3–6. Here we report a cryogenic CMOS control chip operating at 3 kelvin, which outputs tailored microwave bursts to drive silicon quantum bits cooled to 20 millikelvin. We first benchmark the control chip and find an electrical performance consistent with qubit operations of 99.99 per cent fidelity, assuming ideal qubits. Next, we use it to coherently control actual qubits encoded in the spin of single electrons confined in silicon quantum dots7–9 and find that the cryogenic control chip achieves the same fidelity as commercial instruments at room temperature. Furthermore, we demonstrate the capabilities of the control chip by programming a number of benchmarking protocols, as well as the Deutsch–Josza algorithm10, on a two-qubit quantum processor. These results open up the way towards a fully integrated, scalable silicon-based quantum computer.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.QCD/Vandersypen LabQCD/Sebastiano LabQuantum & Computer EngineeringQCD/Scappucci LabBUS/TNO STAFFQCD/Veldhorst LabQuantum Circuit Architectures and TechnologyElectronicsQN/Vandersypen La

    Restiamo umani. Diventare umanità

    No full text
The book illustrates the Public Engagement 2019 project of the University of Bergamo entitled ‘Restiamo umani: riflessioni, pratiche e suggestioni per una comunità che accoglie’.
