One-year neurodevelopmental outcome of very and late preterm infants. Risk factors and correlation with maternal stress

    No full text
Although ―late preterm" (LP) newborns (33-36 weeks of gestational age) represent more than 70% of all preterm labors, little is known about the relation between certain risk factors and developmental outcomes in LP compared to ―very preterm‖ (≤ 32 weeks) children (VP). This study investigates: (1) LP and VP infants‘ development at 12 months of corrected age (CA) using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development - 3rd Edition (BSID-III); (2) correlation between BSID-III performances and maternal stress (using Parenting Stress Index-Short Form, PSI-SF) among LP and VP at 12 months CA; and (3) the link between known neonatal and demographic risk factors and developmental outcomes of LP and VP infants. For both LP and VP infants the Mean Cognitive (LP: 102,69±7,68; VP: 103,63±10,68), Language (LP: 96,23±10,08; VP: 99,10±10,37) and Motor (LP: 91,11±10,33; VP: 93,85±10,17) composite scores were in the normal range, without significant differences between the groups. Correlations between PSI-SF

Place-based strategies or territorial cooperation? Regional development in transnational perspective in Italy

    No full text
Italy has been at the forefront in the implementation of place-based regional development strategies during the 2000s, and it constitutes therefore a privileged point of view to investigate the contents of the approach, its potentialities as well as its limitations. In light of those limitations, several scholars have recently directed their attentions toward a typology of policies - territorial cooperation - which may be regarded as a trans-regional and transnational approach to regional development. In the paper, we offer a review of the main criticisms of place-based strategies and of the main distinctive dimensions and the potential value added of territorial cooperation initiatives, in light of recent debates about territorial vis-à-vis relational approaches to regional development. The identification of transnational spatial units, joint management authorities and trans-regional strategies, it is argued, may indeed help to overcome some of the limitations of place-based strategies - namely, the risk of policy capture, territorial introversion and communitarian confinement - while incurring in others - institutional isomorphism, technocratic management and democratic deficit. As the European political and economic space become increasingly trans-scalar and networked, the two policy domains may potentially learn from each other, and a new generation of local policies may emerge which are both territorial and relational, place-based and trans-regional. © The Author(s) 2014 Reprints and permissions: sagepub.co.uk/journalsPermissions.nav.Italy has been at the forefront in the implementation of place-based regional development strategies during the 2000s, and it constitutes therefore a privileged point of view to investigate the contents of the approach, its potentialities as well as its limitations. Static magnetic fields affect calcium fluxes and inhibit stress-induced apoptosis in human glioblastoma cells

Background: Epidemiologic data revealed increased brain tumor incidence in workers exposed to magnetic fields (MFs), raising concerns about the possible link between MF exposure and cancer. However, MFs seem to be neither mutagenic nor tumorigenic. The mechanism of their tumorigenic effect has not been elucidated. Methods: To evaluate the interference of MFs with physical (heat shock, HS) and chemical (etoposide, VP16) induced apoptoses, respectively, we exposed a human glioblastoma primary culture to 6 mT static MF. We investigated cytosolic Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) fluxes and extent of apoptosis as key endpoints. The effect of MFs on HS- and VP16-induced apoptoses in primary glioblastoma cultures from four patients was also tested. Results: Static MFs increased the [Ca2+]i from a basal value of 124 ± 4 nM to 233 ± 43 nM (P < 0.05). MF exposure dramatically reduced the extent of HS- and VP16-induced apoptoses in all four glioblastoma primary cultures analyzed by 56% (range, 28-87%) and 44% (range, 38-48%), respectively. However, MF alone did not exert any apoptogenic activity. Differences were observed across the four cultures with regard to apoptotic induction by HS and VP16 and to MF apoptotic reduction, with an individual variability with regard to apoptotic sensitivity. Conclusion: The ability of static MFs to reduce the extent of damage-induced apoptosis in glioblastoma cells might allow the survival of damaged and possibly mutated cells. © 2002 Wiley-Liss, Inc

Spin networks and sturmian orbitals: Orthogonal complete polynomial sets in molecular quantum mechanics

    No full text
An outline is given of current advances on some basic ingredients of applied quantum mechanics, that were previously developed along different lines and are now being compacted within a unifying framework. Specifically, (i) complete orthogonal expansion basis sets for the atomic and molecular orbitals of quantum chemistry are classified within angular momentum theory, presently incorporated in and generalized as spin network theory; (ii) spin-networks and the underlying theory of hypergeometrical polynomials are presented within a graphical approach; (iii) the combinatorial significance of the graphical approach is given a projective geometry foundation; (iv) emergence and role of hidden (Regge's) symmetries are revealed and discussed in a variety of contexts

We demonstrate a non-return to zero optical modulation at 50Gb/s with a CVD grown Graphene-Insulator-Graphene electro-absorption modulator integrated on a Si photonic waveguide. The device exhibits a 3dB electro-optical bandwidth of 30GHz. (C) 2019 The Author(s

Economic integration of Russian refugees in the Atlanta metropolitan area, 1986

    No full text
The economic integration of almost 500 Russian Jewish refugees who immigrated to the Atlanta metropolitan area in the period 1973-1985 is evaluated as a function of the time of immigration, language, and professional skills. The necessary data have been obtained from the personal files of the refugees of the Atlanta Jewish Federation, the agency responsible for their resettlement. Within the sample, the distinction has been made between the working families and those of the elderly that are receiving Social Security supplemental income, in order to assess possible differences in their acculturation patterns . The data have been analyzed, assuming as an index of economic integration for the working families, the time necessary to buy a first home, and to move out from the apartment complex where they were firstly settled by the Atlanta Jewish Federation. The average time necessary to buy a house was found to be of about three years with a variance of eight months. The data have confirmed the expected positive correlations between the time necessary to buy a house and professional and language skills acquisition. The economic integration variable seems to match the results obtained in other cities in the United States, making the sample reasonably homogeneous with those studied in other cities of the northeast of the country. The attitude of the Soviet refugees in Atlanta toward their Jewish heritage has been found to be marginal after more than three years in this city. It is concluded that major discrepancies existed between the expectations of the American Jewish community and those of the Russian Jew refugee arriving in the United States. This might have been a contributing factor in reducing the mutual acculturation process that was expected to occur within the Jewish Community of Atlanta, to levels below those detectable with our statistical method

Au-delà de la traduction. Chanter Jacques Brel en italien: Giorgio Gaber, I borghesi (1971)

    No full text
This article analyses Jacques Brel’s influence on Giorgio Gaber’s LP I borghesi, published in 1971. After defining Gaber’s role in the early cantautori movement and his stance in the political debate of the late sixties and seventies, this paper mainly focuses on the songs adapted from Brel’s “Ces gens-là”, “Les bourgeois” and “Jef”. The fact that neither Gaber nor his co-author Sandro Luporini spoke French fluently allows us to investigate the fact that (and the ways in which) the adaptation of a song can draw inspiration from music and interpretation rather than the mere translation of the lyrics
