Prefazione a Messina, R., "La strage negata"

    No full text

Winter cold tollerance of kiwifruit. A survey after winter frost injury in Northern Italy

    No full text
Quantitative flowering of kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa (A. Chev.) C. F. Liang et A. R. Ferguson var. deliciosa) was investigated in 25 North Italian kiwifruit orchards to evaluate frost resistance following a severe cold spell in January 1985, when air temperatures dropped as low as - 23 ° C. The percentage of fruitful shoots in female cultivar 'Hayward' began to decrease at -11°C; at about -18°C very few reproductive buds burst the following spring. As temperatures decreased, the proportion of vegetative shoots, arising from meristems in the basal axils of winter buds, increased. The male cultivar, 'Matua' reacted in a similar way to 'Hayward', but 'Matua' was more tolerant to frost injury. The same reduction in flowering shoots, resulting from a fall in temperature, was obtained at about - 1.2 to -1.8 °C lower in male than in female plants in the range from -II to -18°C. In no case was plant death observed. Acutely damaged plants were capable of regrowth from adventitious buds either of the leaders or of the trunk

Turbulence modulation in particle laden pipe flow: Exact regularized point particle method

    No full text
Many technological applications are characterized by turbulent bounded flows with dispersed particles. For high mass load (particle/fluid mass ratio) a significant inter-phase momentum exchange occurs (two-way coupling regime), inducing a significant alteration of the turbulent field which, in turn, modifies the dynamics of the suspended phase. Aim of the present study is exploring the potentially of recently developed momentum coupling method, dubbed the Exact Regularized Point Particle (ERPP) method, in reproducing via Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) the detailed dynamics of a particles laden turbulent pipe flow. The comparison with available experimental and numerical data confirms the ability of the new approach in reproducing the relevant dynamics also in parameter ranges which are unaccessible to standard techniques

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Casimir-Polder force density between an atom and a conducting wall

    No full text
In this paper we calculate the Casimir-Polder force density (force per unit area acting on the elements of the surface) on a metallic plate placed in front of a neutral atom. To obtain the force density we use the quantum operator associated to the electromagnetic stress tensor. We explicitly show that the integral of this force density over the plate reproduces the total force acting on the plate. This shows that, although the total force is obtained as a sum of surface element-atom contributions, many-body components proportional to the atomic polarizability are included in our result. The local force that we obtain can also be useful in evaluating Casimir torques or stresses on the wall

Editorial. Still searching for the origin of migraine. From comorbidities to chronicization

Migraine is amultifactorial disorder with huge ramifications in the central nervous system. Despite the enormous progress made in recent years in understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying this painful condition, little is known about the factors behind the evolution from the episodic to the chronic form of migrain

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
