Observable and Renegotiable Contracts as Commitments to Cooperate

    No full text
We study an example of strategic delegation in Cournot duopoly and show that if contracts are both observable and renegotiable before becoming common knowledge at the outset of the delegated game, the strategic value of contracts is preserved, but the set of equilibria is greatly enlarged. Managerial contracts can be used by owners to co-ordinate on any product market equilibrium allowing them to get a level of profit at least as large as the profit obtainable in the strategic delegation equilibrium without renegotiation, which is used as a threat point. The equilibrium set includes joint profit maximisation

Governance comunitaria prima di Stato e mercato: una prospettiva sussidiaria

Community governance stands beside the Market and the State not as a residual choice of governance, but with equal dignity. Being a spontaneous and “natural” way to solve coordination problems, it has, first, a logic and, then, a historic primacy on the others. In this paper we analyze areas of application, features and limits of systems of governance based on the recognition of identity. We highlight that elements of Community governance are common to settings as diverse as firms and systems of regulation on the use of common pool resources. In a perspective based on subsidiarity, we then propose a taxonomy of governance systems based on the level of centralization of decisions and on the extent of recognition of identities. Finally, we suggest that the acknowledgement of the role played by Community governance provides us with a different reading key of what is meant by Social market economy and of the European economic model as a whole

A theory of trust failure and vertical integration in industrial districts

    No full text
We model the interaction of independent firms within an industrial district as a repeated game of trust, where cooperative outcomes are not due to the cultural attitudes of the players, but the result of non-cooperative behaviour taking place in a stable organizational setting. When the outside option of changing partners is not too attractive, cooperation may arise also without ties between firms; when such attractiveness increases, cooperation may only be guaranteed by making the relationship more stable through a formal commitment, which may lead to a fully-fledged vertical integration. As the efficiency gains of changing partners becomes even larger, stable relationships are no longer optimal and the traditional model of industrial districts breaks down

Towards a Positive Vision of Global Governance

We propose a tentative classification of the possible solutions to coordination problems based on two dimensions: level of aggregation and recognition of identity, which allow us to sort coordination mechanisms such as markets, states, one-to-one long-term relationships and community governance. Governance of economic, social and political interaction at all levels uses all these coordination devices in different circumstances. To fix even top level international disputes community governance is not infrequently used. Hence, while not being an all purpose solution to global problems, community governance cannot be dismissed as irrelevant at the global level

In praise of rigidity: the bright side of long-term contracts in repeated trust games

    No full text
We study a (possibly repeated) trust game between a principal and an agent, whose skills are private information at the beginning of the relationship and later revealed to the principal. The principal can commit to a long--term relationship through a contract. We show that such a commitment may be needed for trust. Furthermore, the optimal length of the contract between the principal and the agent and the principal's payoff are not monotonic in both the probability that the agent is high--skilled and the value of replacing a low--skilled agent with a high--skilled one

Federale, indipendente e democratica?

The fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime in 2003 has represented an exceptional turning point in the history of the modern Iraqi State. The creation of a federal, united and democratic Iraq should have marked the beginning of a new era for the Iraqi people as well as for the whole region. A few years later, widespread violence and continuous political instability seemed to have swept away the above-mentioned scenario, sparking serious doubts about the very survivability of the Iraqi state, as well as its coherence. This thesis aims to contribute to the ongoing debate adopting an historical-political approach in order to delineate the continuities and discontinuities emerged during the modern history of Iraq and to match them with the current situation on the ground
