    No full text
The present work aims to re-read one of Lorenzo de’ Medici’s first works, "Corinto", through the literary themes which characterize it, keeping in mind the Latin, Greek and Italian models on which the author draws and comparing others, pertinent to the themes analyzed. After a quick introduction to the historical context in which the poem fits, it is presented in terms of content and editorial history, detailed in the Appendix, where the reference texts are also presented. Thus follows the new critical reading. The reflection on the concept of classic and on Lorenzo as author and character of the poem concludes the analysis

An unusual case of colonic mixed adenoendocrine carcinoma: collision versus composite tumor. A case report and review of the literature

    No full text
We report a case of collision tumor of the cecum in a 50-year-old woman and discuss the morphological criteria used for classifying mixed glandular-endocrine neoplasms of tile digestive tract in a large series of reported cases. The cecal tumor showed clear geographic polarization, with no admixture or transition of the 2 neoplastic components. A lymph nodal metastatic deposit contained both tumors. Immunohistochemical stainings were consistent with the carcinomatous and carcinoidal nature of the 2 neoplasms, except for a minute area of carcinoembryonic antigen positivity in the carcinoid. A review of the literature shows that many mixed glandular-endocrine rumors of the digestive tract escape precise classification using established morphological criteria. Collision and composite tumors can share common histological and immunohistochemical features, including polyclonal metastases and carcinoembryonic antigen expression in the carcinoidal area. Mixed rumors of the cecum showing a collision-like morphology appear to behave more aggressively than other colonic adenoendocrine carcinomas. (c) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved

First Person is a series of interviews with the first authors of a selection of papers published in Journal of Cell Science, helping early-career researchers promote themselves alongside their papers. Alba Delrio-Lorenzo is first author on ‘Sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ decreases with age and correlates with the decline in muscle function in Drosophila’, published in JCS. Alba is a PhD student in the lab of Javier García-Sancho and María Teresa Alonso at the Instituto de Biología y Genética Molecular (IBGM), University of Valladolid, Spain, investigating the molecular mechanisms implicated in aging, particularly muscle aging.Peer reviewe

Endoscopic laser en bloc removal of bladder tumor. Surgical radicality and improvement of the pathological diagnostic accuracy

    No full text
Introduction: Bladder cancer is one of the most common tumors among the general population. The first surgical approach to the tumor is often the transurethral resection with monopolar or bipolar loop. Recently, laser energy has become an alternative for resection of small bladder tumor, because it allows to obtain high quality samples with the “en bloc” technique. Our study aims to show the results of endoscopic diode laser treatment of bladder tumor up to three centimeters in maximum diameter. Materials and methods: 189 patients underwent “en bloc” resection with diode dual length laser (980 nm-1470 nm). Follow up was over 12 months. Patients age range was from 45 to 75 years. Maximum diameter of the lesions was 3.0 cm. For each patient, a cold forceps biopsy sample was performed. Results: All samples collected presented detrusorial layer. Pathological exam showed: 28 (14.8%) Ta, G1-G2; 7 (3.7%) T3, G2-G3; 14 (7.4%) T1, G2-G3 and 140 ( 74.1%) Ta, G2-G3. No complications occurred during or after surgery. At a median follow-up period of 6 months, we had no recurrence in the previous site of tumor. In the follow up at 3/6/12 months in 4 cases we had recurrence in different sites of bladder wall. Conclusions: Laser “en bloc” resection is an effective, feasible, and safe treatment for bladder tumor. It could be a valid alternative to monopolar and bipolar resection in small bladder cancer treatment

A Florentine family in crisis: the Strozzi in the fifteenth century.

PhDIn 1434 the Strozzi lineage had held a leading position in Florentine society and government for at least one hundred and fifty years, and was one of the largest and wealthiest of the city's patrician lineages. The records of the catasto of 1427 and of the scrutiny of 1433 are used to give a profile of the dominant social, economic and political position of the Strozzi before the advent of Medicean dominance. Their record of electoral success, and the political and cultural leadership of influential and respected men such as Palla di Nofri and Matteo di Simone, with other factors, put the Strozzi amongst the greatest enemies of the victorious Medicean regime of late 1434. The effects of political opposition and exile on the lineage are examined both directly, through records of office-holding, and indirectly through such indicators as marriage alliances and household wealth. The two most prominent lines of the Strozzi were exiled after 1434. Palla di Nofri's life and preoccupations in his Paduan exile are examined, together with the lives of his sons; none of these Strozzi ever returned to Florence, pursued as they were by the enmity of the Medicean regime. The very different careers of Filippo di Matteo and his brother Lorenzo are also examined: how they succeeded in founding a lucrative bank in Naples, and in returning to Florence to 'rebuild' (rifare) the position of the Strozzi lineage there. The final decades of the century saw the Strozzi in an economically more secure position, due substantially to the efforts of Filippo. Except for a very small number of its members admitted into the regime, most of the lineage is here shown to have remained excluded from significant political office until after the fall of the Medici regime in 1494

The role of microRNAs in thyroid carcinomas

    No full text
Thyroid cancers (TCs) are the most common malignancies of endocrine organs. They originate from cells of different origin within the thyroid gland, which is located at the base of the neck. Several forms of TCs have been classified and great variability is observed in molecular, cellular and clinical features. The most common forms have favorable prognosis but a number of very aggressive TCs, which are characterized by a less differentiated cellular phenotype, have no effective treatment at the moment. While TC causes are not completely understood, many genetic factors involved in their onset have been discovered. In particular, activating mutations of BRAF, RET or RAS genes are known to be specifically associated with TC initiation, progression and outcome. The involvement of microRNAs in thyroid neoplasms has recently changed the paradigm for biomarker discovery in TC, suggesting that these small non-coding RNAs could be used to develop, refine or strengthen strategies for diagnosis and management of TCs. In this review, the importance of microRNA profiling in TC is explored suggesting that these molecules can be included in procedures that can perform better than any known clinical index in the identification of adverse outcomes
