How to become a Hanseatic? What made someone a (Hamburg) Patriot? Why was it not possible for a high-shool graduate to study in Hamburg before 1918? How was it possible that catastrophes in the 19th century led to modernisation in Hamburg? This publications will answer to questions like these.Around 1850 Hamburg underwent radical changes. Werner von Melle, born in 1853, played an active and forming part in the history of the city as a solicitor, senator, and mayor. Being the first president of the Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung, he devoted himself to the foundation of the University of Hamburg. This first part of his biography deals with the complex relations between the man and the city

Calcifying odontogenic cyst in a 91-year-old man

BackgroundCalcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) is a developmental odontogenic cystic lesion that is Lined by ameloblastoma Like epithelium, that includes focal ghost cells. COC is rare, representing less than 1% of odontogenic lesions. COCs are diagnosed at all ages and they have a mean age of about 30 years with a similar male and female genders distribution. The purpose of the present article is to present and discuss the diagnosis and management of a 91-year-old man affected by COCs.Case presentationA 91-year-old male subject was referred for a swelling in the left body of the mandible. Intraoral examination revealed a hard blueish swelling in correspondence of the lingual side of the left mandibular body, extended to the oral floor. It was decided to perform a CT scan, that revealed a well-defined, unilocular, radiolucent lesion extending from the lingual corticle of the left mandibular body to the oral floor. Under local anesthesia, the cyst underwent en bloc enucleation and curettage and was sent for pathological examination, that confirmed the diagnosis of calcifying odontogenic cyst.ConclusionsEnucleation with curettage still represents the treatment of choice for COCs. Resection may be considered in selected cases when an aggressive clinical behavior is observed or a high recurrence rate is suspected. A strict follow-up is advised to monitor eventual recurrences. In large lesions, or when the patient is affected by severe comorbidities, conservative treatments such as decompression and marsupialization may still be proposed

Melle but not Melle? A mine’s mint as a hub for Carolingian silver coinage recycling

International audienceAbstract The mines at Melle in Deux‐Sèvres, France, are known as the only significant source of silver for the early Middle Ages until the 10th century. Though it was not a major locality, the settlement possessed a mint in the Merovingian period that became one of the major centres of coin production under the Carolingians in the ninth century. Following the decrease in Carolingian power and increase in the autonomy of local authorities from c .900, the counts of Poitou started minting a coinage in the name of Melle that remained with the same typology for the next two hundred years. This paper presents an examination of the trace elements (Au and Bi) determined by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA‐ICP‐MS) in nearly 2000 silver coins covering four centuries over the Merovingian, Carolingian and Feudal periods. It has two main objectives: first, identifying the patterns of trace elements for the coinages attributed to Melle by comparing them with those of the same periods from other mints; and second, establishing the general evolution of the trace elements in coins from Poitou and other areas are scrutinized to evaluate the contribution of fresh silver from Melle, in order to identify the silver stocks available. One main result is that part of the silver minted at Melle in the ninth century does not present the trace element patterns that characterize Melle silver, suggesting the use of the Melle mint as a hub for coining not only local silver from the mines but also for recycling and refining silver previously coined elsewhere
