    During the meeting in Arlington, USA in 2001, the scientists grouped in PROMUSA agreed with the launching of the Global Musa Genomics Consortium. The Consortium aims to apply genomics technologies to the improvement of this important crop. These genome projects put banana as the third model species after Arabidopsis and rice that will be analyzed and sequenced. Comparing to Arabidopsis and rice, banana genome provides a unique and powerful insight into structural and in functional genomics that could not be found in those two species.     Sansevieria trifasciata is a uniquely houseplant that can provide clean air to occupied room because it can absorb harmful substances from the air. This research aim to compare chlorophyll content, morphological-, and anatomicalcharacters of five cultivars of this plant. Morphological characters of all S. trifasciata observed varied in pattern, colour, and size of the leaf. Stomata of all cultivars can be found on both leaf surfaces, abaksial (lower surface) have higher stomatal density. Distribution of single stomata was presented in all cultivars, while clustered stomata were also found in cv. Moonsine. Among all cultivars, stomatal density and stomatal index were found the highest in cv. Moonsine. The highest chlorophyll content, the largest size of leaf and the thinnest leaf were found in the cv. African Dawn. Potentially, S. trifasciata cv. African Dawn and S. trifasciata cv. Moonsine could absorb air pollution better than other cultivars

    Home garden is a plot of land located immediately around the home, mostly fenced around and have clear boundaries, planted with one or various types of plants, which are used for everyday purposes or trade. The aims of this research were to identify and inventory the plants and to compare the pattern of home garden in type of work (the farmers and the fishermen). This research used random sampling method, by selecting five villages in the subdistrict Paciran (fishermen) and five villages in the sudistrict Laren (farmers). For each village ten households were taken as a sample. The results of the identification and plants inventory in Lamongan were 175 species (67 families) which included in subdistrict Laren (farmer) 155 species (63 families) and 84 species (43 families) in subdistrict Paciran (fishermen). The species found in the fishing area were ornamental plant (66,7%), fruit plant (16,7%), herbs (5,9%), flavor / spices (4,7%), timber plants / other functions (3.6%) and vegetables (2,4%). The species found in the farmers area were ornamental plant (55,5%), fruit plant (17,4%), herbs (6.4%), flavor/spices (5,8%), timber plants/other functions (5,2%), starch plant (5,2%) and vegetables (4,5%). The pattern of home garden differences can be seen from the availability of narrow or limited home garden area, the composition of planted plant (mixed), location of plant to home building, and plant utilizationPekarangan adalah sebidang tanah yang terletak langsung di sekitar rumah tinggal, kebanyakan berpagar keliling dan memiliki batas-batas yang jelas, ditanami dengan satu atau berbagai jenis tanaman, yang digunakan untuk keperluan sehari-hari atau diperdagangkan. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengidentifikasi dan menginventarisasi tanaman pekarangan serta untuk membandingkan pola pekarangan ditinjau dari jenis pekerjaan masyarakat (petani dan nelayan). Penelitian ini menggunakan metode random sampling, dengan memilih 5 desa di kecamatan Paciran (nelayan) dan 5 desa di kecamatan Laren (petani). Setiap desa diambil sepuluh rumah tangga sebagai sampel. Hasil identifikasi dan inventarisasi tanaman pekarangan di Kabupaten Lamongan diperoleh 175 spesies (67 famili) yang meliputi Kecamatan Laren (petani) 155 spesies (63 famili) dan Kecamatan Paciran (nelayan) 84 spesies (43 famili). Jenis tanaman yang ditemukan di wilayah nelayan adalah tanaman hias (66,7%), tanaman buah (16,7%), tanaman obat (5,9%), tanaman bumbu/rempah (4,7%), tanaman kayu/fungsi lain (3,6%) dan tanaman sayur (2,4%). Jenis tanaman yang ditemukan di wilayah petani adalah tanaman hias (55,5%), tanaman buah (17,4%), tanaman obat (6,4%), tanaman bumbu/rempah (5,8%), tanaman kayu/fungsi lain (5,2%), tanaman penghasil pati (5,2%) dan tanaman sayur (4,5%). Vita.Includes bibliographical references (pages 24-29).Dr. Paul Bach-y-Rita was a visionary neuroscientist and an early pioneer of the theory of neuroplasticity. He is the father of sensory substitution, a field which explores how one sensory modality can be transferred to another. This work culminated in the invention of the Brainport, a device that transmits information through electrodes on the tongue. Bach-y- Rita's company, Wicab, developed two versions of the Brainport. One uses visual information to reveal the sighted world to the blind; another uses body alignment information to help "wobblers" (individuals with vestibular conditions) navigate. The author received exclusive access to Bach-y-Rita's unpublished memoirs.
