No full textSpecial Edition issue - Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism in Sub-Saharan AfricaWhile conducting research on counter-terrorism (CT) systems of the Central and Eastern European Member States of the European Union, a unique perspective on the European involvement in countering terrorism in Sub-Saharan Africa was offered to the author by a Czech defence ministry official. In his view, the fact that his country made a decision to contribute “boots on the ground” to the European Union Training Mission in Mali (EUTM Mali) was astonishing, to say the least: “Things like Mali, you sometimes wonder how these thing happen, even if you are part of them (Havranek 2013).” Thus a decision to participate in this latest CT motivated (building a Malian military capable of taking on the jihadists of Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, AQIM) EU venture in Africa seems not to have been preceded by a careful analysis and weighting of the options on behalf of his country. In fact, it seemed like a knee jerk reaction to a call for troops from France and subsequently from Brussels. In the end, we might even speculate if, in this very case, the Czech Republic duly settled on a number of troops to be sent to Mali (very low – in dozens) and comfortably ticked off the box on its involvement in yet another Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) military mission in Africa, and its contribution to external aspects of combating terrorism on EU level.Publisher PD

The Project Meal Friend : The social significance of the meal for elderly persons living at home
No full textBakgrund: Andelen äldre ökar och allt fler lever till mycket hög ålder. Med stigande ålder ökar risken för problem relaterat till mat och måltider och ensamboende äldre har ökad risk att drabbas av undernäring. Att äta tillsammans med andra kan öka matintaget och bidra till social gemenskap hos äldre. Syfte: Syftet var att beskriva upplägget av Projekt Måltidsvän samt vilken betydelse äldre deltagare i projektet tillskriver social interaktion under måltiden. Metod: I Projekt Måltidsvän kan äldre som är 67 år eller äldre få sällskap under måltiden av en frivillig måltidsvän. Frivilligsamordnaren intervjuades för att belysa perspektivet från en övergripande nivå. Tre äldre mottagare intervjuades om deras upplevelser av social interaktion och måltidens betydelse och analyserades genom kvalitativ innehållsanalys. Resultat: Det framkom i intervjun med frivilligsamordnaren att Projekt Måltidsvän har varit populärt att söka till som frivillig och utmaningen har varit att finna äldre deltagare som vill medverka i projektet. Analysen av intervjuerna med de äldre deltagarna genererade fem kategorier där det framkom att respondenterna till en början kunde känna sig både ambivalenta och nyfikna inför deltagandet i projektet. Social interaktion var viktigt och en lyckad matchning var en förutsättning för att relation skulle utvecklas till en vänskap. En trivsam måltidsmiljö och att äta i gemenskap med andra var en viktig förutsättning för en trivsam måltid. Måltidsvännen kunde också utgöra ett stöd under måltiden. Slutsats: Deltagarna i Projekt Måltidsvän har varit nöjda med projektet och den sociala gemenskap som uppstått under måltiden, vilket innebär att denna typ av insats kan användas i kommuner för att främja ett friskt åldrande.Background: The proportion of elderly is increasing and more people are living to a very high age. With higher age, the risk of problems related to food and meals increases, and elderly people living alone are at risk of suffering from malnutrition. Eating together with others can increase food intake and contribute to the social companionship for the elderly. Objective: The purpose was to describe the structure of Project Meal Friend and what significance older participants in the project give to social interaction during the meal. Method: In Project Meal Friend, a volunteer meal friend can join elderly people who are 67 or older during the meal. The volunteer coordinator was interviewed to highlight the perspective from an organizational level. Three elderly recipients were interviewed about their experiences of social interaction and the importance of the meal, which were analysed with qualitative content analysis. Results: The interview with the volunteer coordinator showed that the Project Meal Friend has been popular to apply for as a volunteer and the challenge has been to find older participants to the project. The analysis of the interviews with the elderly participants generated five categories where it emerged that the respondents could initially feel both ambivalent and curious about the participation in the project. Social interactions were important and a successful match was a prerequisite for the relationship to develop into a friendship. An enjoyable meal environment and eating in companionship with others was an important prerequisite for a pleasant meal. The Meal Friend could also provide support during the meal. Conclusion: The participants in Project Meal Friend have been satisfied with the project and the social companionship that emerged during the meal, which means that this type of projects can be used in municipalities to promote healthy aging

Facilitating the BIM coordinator and empowering the suppliers with automated data compliance checking
Get PDFIn projects with Building Information Modelling (BIM), the collaboration among the various actors is a very intricate and intensive process. The various suppliers and engineers provide their input in Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), which in turn is used for design coordination. However, the IFCs have to undergo an intermediate checking process to ensure compliance with various client-set and technical requirements. The paper focuses on the potential of (semi-)automatic IFC compliance checks and discusses a relevant recent initiative in the Netherlands, according to which several IFC compliance criteria were agreed among 14 contractors. This study aims to unravel the changes induced by this development not only as to the IFC compliance checks, but also as to potentially balancing the roles between the BIM coordinator and the suppliers.Accepted Author ManuscriptDesign & Construction Managemen
A performance analysis of graduate school staff at University of Wisconsin-Stout
Get PDFPlan BThe University of Wisconsin-Stout (UW-Stout) Graduate School serves the campus community with a coordinator position and three permanent support staff positions. After a consultant from Noel-Levitz visited campus and a University wide analysis (ESURC), several recommendations were forwarded to UW-Stout Academic and Student Affairs administrators. One specific recommendation was to evaluate all permanent positions in the Graduate School and match tasks with people to better meet the needs of the graduate community. A performance analysis of these positions was conducted and the results are reported in this study. To accomplish this performance analysis, Graduate School staff, were asked to describe their position tasks and duties in detail. This analysis was documented and recommendations for possible changes to better serve the campus community were forwarded to the UW-Stout Provost and Associate Vice Chancellor for review
