    Current concepts in nanostructured contrast media development for In vivo photoacoustic imaging

    Photoacoustic (PA) imaging is indeed one of the most promising bioimaging techniques for theranostics applications in humans, allowing for the visualization of blood vessels and melanomas with high spatial resolution. However, in order to overcome the endogenous contrast arising from interfering endogenous species such as haemoglobin and melanin, specific contrast agents need to be developed, allowing PAI to successfully identify targeted contrast in the range of wavelengths in which interference from the biomatrix is minimized. This has been first performed by small molecule dyes, which, however, suffer from some important limitations such as low hydrophilicity and short circulation times. For this reason, scientific research has recently directed its efforts towards the development of nanostructured contrast agents capable of providing efficient PA contrast at low concentrations with low toxicity and high biocompatibility. The principal nanostructures are based on (1) metal and semiconducting nanoparticles, amongst which variously shaped nano-gold plays the main role, (2) carbon nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes and graphene, and (3) conjugated polymer nanoparticles. In this review, the principal characteristics of this class of materials are reported and greater focus is directed towards in vivo studies. A detailed analysis is performed on various physical-chemical parameters that define the PA response of reported contrast agents, like absorption coefficients and photoacoustic efficiencies. By comparing the experimental data, this review provides a comprehensive tool for the evaluation of new nanostructured contrast agents for PA imaging

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Imprints of primordial non-Gaussianity on the number counts of cosmic shear peaks

    We studied the effect of primordial non-Gaussianity with varied bispectrum shapes on the number counts of signal-to-noise ratio peaks in wide-field cosmic shear maps. The two cosmological contributions to this particular weak lensing statistic, namely the chance projection of Large Scale Structure (LSS) and the occurrence of real, cluster-sized dark matter haloes, have been modelled semianalytically, thus allowing to easily introduce the effect of non-Gaussian initial conditions. We performed a Fisher matrix analysis by taking into account the full covariance of the peak counts in order to forecast the joint constraints on the level of primordial non-Gaussianity and the amplitude of the matter power spectrum that are expected from future wide-field imaging surveys. We find that positive-skewed non-Gaussianity increases the number counts of cosmic shear peaks, more so at high signal-to-noise ratio values, where the signal is mostly dominated by massive clusters as expected. The increment is at the level of ̃1 per cent for fNL= 10 and ̃10 per cent for fNL= 100 for a local shape of the primordial bispectrum, while different bispectrum shapes give generically a smaller effect. For a future survey on the model of the proposed ESA space mission Euclid and by avoiding the strong assumption of being capable of distinguishing the weak-lensing signal of galaxy clusters from the chance projection of LSSs, we forecast a 1σ error on the level of non-Gaussianity of ̃30-40 for the local and equilateral models, and of ̃100-200 for the less explored enfolded and orthogonal bispectrum shapes

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Gravitational lensing of the CMB by galaxy clusters

    We adapt a non-linear filter proposed by Hu (2001) for detecting lensing of the CMB by large-scale structures to recover surface-density profiles of galaxy clusters from their localised, weak gravitational lensing effect on CMB fields. Shifting the band-pass of the filter to smaller scales, and normalising it such as to reproduce the convergence rather than the deflection angle, we find that the mean density profile of a sample of 100 clusters can be recovered to better than 10% from well within the scale radius to almost the virial radius. The kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect is shown to be a negligible source of error. We test the filter applying it to data simulated using the characteristics of the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT), showing that it will be possible to recover mean cluster profiles outside a radius of 11' corresponding to ACT's angular resolution
