Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Realistic simulator for embryo transfer training
No full textINTRODUÇÃO: O objetivo da simulação é replicar cenários de atendimento ao paciente de forma realista com ambiente para fins de feedback e avaliação. Devido ao alto custo, ao investimento de tempo e, principalmente, aos aspectos emocionais envolvidos no tratamento de fertilização in vitro (FIV), um alto nível de importância é atribuído ao procedimento de transferência embrionária (TE) pelo médico assistente. OBJETIVO: O estudo teve como objetivo desenvolver um simulador de baixo custo e altamente realista para treinamento em TE, utilizando materiais sintéticos e reutilizáveis, e validar sua eficácia como ferramenta de treinamento. METODOLOGIA: Foram desenvolvidos quatro protótipos do simulador, culminando em um modelo de alta fidelidade em elastômero termoplástico, com visualização guiada por ultrassom. A validação envolveu a participação de doze especialistas em reprodução assistida (três experts e nove não-experts) que avaliaram o simulador usando questionários que avaliavam a face e o conteúdo. RESULTADOS: Apesar da dificuldade de passagem do cateter e da não visualização da linha endometrial, os avaliadores foram categóricos em avaliar positivamente o simulador. O resultado mostra sua importância no treinamento dessas habilidades na transferência embrionária. Para futuras pesquisas, faz-se necessário fazer a validação do simulador quanto à simulação em si, o quanto que ele consegue melhorar o desfecho final de cada participante em melhorar a sua técnica do procedimento de transferência embrionária. Ressalta-se, porém, a importância de mostrar que é possível desenvolver um simulador realístico para treinamento em transferência embrionária bem mais barato e mais acessível do que existe no mercado e que o conhecimento adquirido na simulação de transferência embrionária utilizando o simulador pode ser trasladado para a vida real. CONCLUSÃO: O estudo demonstrou a viabilidade da criação de um simulador realista e de baixo custo para treinamento em TE, contribuindo para melhorar o acesso a treinamento de alta qualidade para profissionais de reprodução humana assistida. A pesquisa sugere futuras melhorias no simulador para aprimorar ainda mais a fidelidade e experiência de treinamento.INTRODUCTION: The objective of simulation is to replicate patient care scenarios in a realistic manner with an environment for feedback and evaluation purposes. Due to the high cost, time investment and, most importantly, the emotional aspects involved in in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment, a high level of importance is attached to the embryo transfer (ET) procedure by the attending physician. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to develop a low-cost and highly realistic simulator for ET training, using synthetic and reusable materials, and to validate its effectiveness as a training tool. METHODOLOGY: Four prototypes of the simulator were developed, culminating in a high-fidelity model in thermoplastic elastomer, with ultrasound-guided visualization. Validation involved the participation of twelve specialists in assisted reproduction (three experts and nine non-experts) who evaluated the simulator using questionnaires that assessed its appearance and content. RESULTS: Despite the difficulty in passing the catheter and the lack of visualization of the endometrial line, the evaluators were categorical in evaluating the simulator positively. The result shows its importance in training these skills in embryo transfer. For future research, it is necessary to validate the simulator in terms of the simulation itself, to see how much it can improve the final outcome of each participant in improving their technique during the embryo transfer procedure. However, it is important to highlight the importance of showing that it is possible to develop a realistic simulator for training in embryo transfer that is much cheaper and more accessible than what is available on the market and that the knowledge acquired in the embryo transfer simulation using the simulator can be transferred to real life. CONCLUSION: The study demonstrated the feasibility of creating a realistic and low-cost simulator for ET training, contributing to improving access to high-quality training for assisted human reproduction professionals.
