Le informazioni geografiche dei social network (SMGI) a supporto della pianificazione del turismo. L’esempio di Cagliari.
Il contributo propone una discussione sul possibile utilizzo delle informazioni geografiche
provenienti dai social network nell’ambito della pianificazione del turismo su scala regionale e
locale. Il crescente utilizzo dei social network da parte degli utenti in tutto il mondo ha fatto si che
queste piattaforme, e soprattutto l’informazione derivante da esse, sia utile per i turisti, che possono
facilmente ottenere dati adeguati sulle destinazioni e sui servizi offerti, grazie alle recensioni
liberamente condivise dagli altri utenti, e per gli operatori turistici, i quali possono utilizzare queste
informazioni per migliorare le proprie strategie di marketing e promozione. Questi dati,
comunemente definiti Social Media Geographic Information (SMGI), possono inoltre offrire nuove
opportunità per supportare le fasi decisionali nella pianificazione del turismo. Purtroppo la
ricchezza di contenuti sulle percezioni e sulle opinioni degli utenti, resa disponibile dalle SMGI,
non viene ancora adeguatamente utilizzata dai pianificatori per le analisi territoriali.
Lo studio propone un nuovo approccio per analizzare, qualitativamente e quantitativamente,
attraverso l’uso delle SMGI, le relazioni che insistono tra il gradimento dei turisti, le località
geografiche e l’offerta turistica in Sardegna. La metodologia adottata include la raccolta di dati da
Booking.com e TripAdvisor, la loro integrazione ed elaborazione con i dati ufficiali in ambiente
GIS, e l’applicazione di tecniche di analisi di statistica spaziale per identificare e valutare i fattori
che possono determinare il successo di una destinazione turistica.
La metodologia viene applicata alla scala regionale, individuando le aree maggiormente apprezzate
dai turisti, ed alla scala locale per la destinazione di Cagliari, per la quale vengono identificati e
valutati i principali fattori che ne determinano il successo come destinazione turistica. I risultati
ottenuti possono essere utilizzati come base conoscitiva per guidare ulteriori specifiche analisi e per
sviluppare strategie di sviluppo sostenibile nell’ambito della pianificazione territoriale e del turismo
tramite processi decisionali informati

Social Media Geographic Information: Recent Findings and Opportunities for Smart Spatial Planning
This paper deals with the opportunities of Social Media Geographic Information (SMGI) as valuable support for analysis, design and decision-making in urban and regional planning. In the light of the recent advances in digital geographic information, such as Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDI) and Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) which are fostering innovation in urban and regional planning, the authors focus on the potentialities of Social Media as source of knowledge for the planning practices. The authors argue SMGI may play an important role to inform 'smart city' strategies extending authoritative and sensor data infrastructure with experiential and pluralist citizens knowledge. To support this thesis, an innovative methodology for the advance of Social Media Geographic Information (SMGI) Analytics is proposed. To this end, the authors present an original user-friendly tool able to extract information from popular Social Media such as Twitter.com and Youtube.com and to apply Spatial-Temporal Textual (STTx) analysis . Some examples are provided at the regional and at the local scale in order to demonstrate the potential of SMGI analytics in regional and urban planning. The results show how SMGI analytics can support design, analysis and decision making in planning, and add the value of pluralism to inform smart city initiatives. The paper ends with some brief conclusions on the opportunities of SMGI analytics for possibly affecting decision-making dynamics and urban and regional planning processes, through citizens’ dialogue and integration of experiential and professional knowledge
Social Media Geographic Information: Current developments and opportunities in urban and regional planning
In the last decade unprecedented wealth of digital (geographic) information has been made available to planners to support analysis, design and decision-making. On the one hand, developments in Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDI) (i.e. INSPIRE Directive 2007/02/EC in Europe) are fostering the access and reuse of authoritative Geographic Information (GI) according to common data, technology, and policy standards (Campagna and Craglia, 2012). On the other hand, advancement in geobrowsers and mobile technologies enabled citizens acting as volunteer sensors (Goodchild, 2007) to crowdsource GI real-time in a bottom-up fashion. More recently, widespread social media success favoured the diffusion of geo-referenced multimedia (Sui and Goodchild, 2011), or Social media Geographic Information (SMGI). The latter can be considered an innovative Big Data source, inasmuch as traditional data collection and spatial analysis techniques may be not fully suitable for eliciting the full knowledge potential out of them. Furthermore, this potential may be considered still limited for the public users both in terms of access and available analysis methods and tools. Accordingly new methods and tools should be developed. In the light of these premises, the authors present an assessment framework for social media data analysis methods and tools, with the aims of defining the current state of development as well as opportunities for decision-support in spatial planning. The poster illustrates the assessment framework, referring to real world case studies documented in literature and proposes an original methodology for social media data spatial analysis (i.e. spatio-temporal-textual analysis) developed by the authors, addressing pitfalls in existing practices
From Spatial Data Infrastructures to Planning Support Systems
Developments in Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDI) offer spatial planners unprecedented wealth of
digital spatial data and services, which may be used to support more informed decision-making in
urban and regional planning. However, these resources are often underexploited due to lack of the
necessary skills by practitioners, so missing the opportunity for innovation in the planning practices.
Geodesign is an emerging approach which bridges the gap between spatial planning and design, and
Geographic Information Science. The main underlying assumption in Geodesign is that geographic
knowledge and geo-information technologies can support more informed design and sustainable
decision-making in urban and regional planning. This contribution presents two different
approaches developed by the authors to research in Geodesign. The first approach concerns the
development of methodology-oriented 1st generation Planning Support Systems (PSS 1.0) for Local
Land-Use Planning and Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA-LLUP). The second approach
concerns base research for the definition and development of process-oriented 2nd generation
Planning Support Systems (PSS 2.0). The results aim at demonstrating how Spatial Data
Infrastructures can be used as a base for Planning Support System implementation in spatial
governance
Metaplanning, Geodesign e Sistemi di Supporto alla Pianificazione di seconda generazione
Il processo di pianificazione ha subito un’evoluzione significativa negli ultimi decenni, passando
gradualmente da un paradigma tecnocratico ad uno partecipativo. Tuttavia la complessità del
processo aumenta con il coinvolgimento di numerosi attori e occorrono nuovi strumenti per
governare tale complessità, capaci di facilitare la gestione del processo. La modellazione del
processo di pianificazione dovrebbe essere alla base di un Sistema di Supporto alla Pianificazione
(PSS), contribuendo così all’ottimizzazione, all’automazione, alla documentazione dei contenuti, ed
al monitoraggio del progetto. Al fine di sperimentare questa ipotesi, il geodesign è stato individuato
come un approccio metodologico adatto al paradigma partecipativo della pianificazione, per
sperimentare la modellazione del processo secondo un approccio di “metaplanning”, attraverso
tecniche e strumenti di Business Process Management. L’obiettivo finale è di aprire la strada verso
lo sviluppo di PSS di 2a generazione

The role of Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) and Social Media Geographic Information (SMGI) in Spatial Planning
Our contribution concerns the use of Social Media Geographic Information (SMGI) as an emergent pluralist source of information which may find valuable application in spatial planning and Geodesign. On the base of empirical research, the authors propose a tentative framework for SMGI Analytics in spatial planning. Among other methods, Spatial-Temporal Textual Analysis (STTx) is proposed as a tool to investigate people perceptions and interest in space and time. Possible implications and benefits of SMGI analytics for the planning practice emerge from the overall discussion
