Restoration of historic masonry structures damaged by the 2009 Abruzzo earthquake through injection grouts
This research is aimed at developing a methodology for the emergency stabilization and restoration of historic buildings damaged by the 2009 Abruzzo earthquake, through on-purpose modified injection grouts based on hydraulic binders. Several portions of multi-leaf stone masonry walls from buildings in the towns of Onna, Tempera and Sant’Eusanio Forconese, all located in the province of L’Aquila, were selected for carrying out injection tests with six grouts. Before and after injection, a comprehensive experimental program, including chemical and microstructural tests on original and repair materials and mechanical tests on the masonry walls, was performed. The present contribution describes the tests carried out at the various levels and discusses the main results obtained
Peculiar Structure of Water Nanosheets in Slightly Superhydrated Vermiculite Clay Studied by Car-Parrinello Molecular Dynamics Simulations
Clay minerals are of remarkable interest for understanding various natural phenomena as well as for applications such as the treatment of toxic and radioactive waste materials and catalysis. Water confined in clays has been recently addressed both theoretically and experimentally for the study of fundamental water properties. Using Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics simulations at different temperatures of slightly superhydrated Na-vermiculite clay we found an unusual water structure. Water forms two closed packed hexagonal plane layers parallel to aluminosilicate sheets and linked to their surface oxygens by hydrogen bonds. The presence of these hydrogen bonds and the coordination to Na cations lying midway between the clay layers, lowers the number of water – water hydrogen bonds and makes the closed-packed structure possible. The considered water content corresponds to that of interesting experiments performed to detect dynamical crossovers in the adsorbed supercooled water
Experimental investigation of the seakeeping of a frigate model
An experimental study for ship seakeeping test of a modern frigate ship model is presented.
The transient test technique based on the interaction between the wave packet and the advancing ship model has been used in order to determine the response amplitude operator for Fn = 0:1, 0:19, 0:28, 0:34 and 0:41. The transient test results are also compared to the data provided by standard techniques in regular and irregular waves
