    Secondary-impact debris in the Didymos system: What could be observed by Hera?

    Context. The DART spacecraft impacted the asteroid Dimorphos in 2022. This small moonlet of the asteroid Didymos ejects dust, rocks, and boulder into the space around both asteroids. Part of those ejecta can re-impact the surface of the two asteroids. At the end of 2026, the ESA mission Hera will arrive at the system to analyse the binary system and the consequences of the impacts in detail. Aims. We investigated the effects of low-velocity impacts of rocks and boulders that were originally released after the DART impact on the surface of Didymos and the dynamics of the dust particles that were released by these impacts. We determined whether any of these effects can be observed by the Hera mission. Methods. The iSALE-2D shock physics code was used to simulate the re-impacts of boulders on the surface of the asteroid. To model the dynamics of the boulders and of the subsequent ejecta, we used a numerical model that included the gravity of non-spherical Didymos and Dimorphos, solar gravity, and the radiation pressure. Results. The sesquinary impacts can result in small, shallow craters on the surface of Didymos. For the given low impact speeds, the ejected mass mostly depends on the boulder mass. Ejection speeds range from ~10 to ~80% of the impact speed. The majority of the ejected dust falls back and covers a large area of the surface, mostly at low to medium latitudes. Fewer than 20% of the ejected dust escapes from the system after a few days. The space surrounding the asteroids becomes free from dust after 15- 30 days following each sesquinary impact

    Omeonga-A possible large impact structure on the Eastern Kasai Province (D.R. Congo)?

    The Omeonga ring structure (D.R. Congo) shows a remarkable drainage pattern encircling an area up to 45km wide and encompassing a central smoothed relief 20km wide. This inner circular ridge is elevated about 70m above the ring depression corresponding to the bed of the Unia River, which flows between the inner ridge and an outer irregular ridge. Landsat 7 ETM and ASTER DEM show that the structural characteristics resemble those of several wide impact structures known on Earth. Other geological modes of origin that could produce ring structures, such as magmatic activity, salt diapirism, and karst dissolution have been considered. However, after evaluating the regional stratigraphy, the distribution of volcanism, and morphometry, these processes seem to be rather unlikely. If of impact origin, the age of the Omeonga structure can be constrained to the Late Cretaceous-Cenozoic according to the youngest units in which the ring structure was formed. © The Meteoritical Society, 2011

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     COMPARISON OF DIFFERENT PAN-SHARPENING METHODS APPLIED TO IKONOS IMAGERY

    On board the IKONOS satellite there are sensors operating in the panchromatic and multispectral range: the geometric resolution of the acquired images is higher in the first case (1 m) than in the second one (4 m); on the contrary, panchromatic images have lower spectral resolution than the latter. Pan-sharpening methods allow to reduce the pixel dimensions of the multispectral images to comply with the panchromatic resolution. In this way, it is possible to obtain enhanced detailed data in both geometric and spectral resolution. This work aims to compare the results obtained from the application of eight different pan-sharpening methods, which are totally carried out by using the raster calculator in QGIS: Multiplicative, Simple Mean, Brovey Transformation, Brovey Transformation Fast, Intensity Hue Saturation (IHS), IHS Fast, Gram-Schmidt, and Gram-Schmidt Fast. Each resulting dataset is compared with the original one to evaluate the performance of each method by the following quality indices: Correlation Coefficient (CC), Universal Image Quality Index (UIQI), Relative Average Spectral Error (RASE), Erreur Relative Global Adimensionnelle de Synthèse (ERGAS), Spatial Correlation Coefficient (SCC) and Spatial ERGAS (SERGAS); however, this is a difficult task because the quality of the fused image depends on the considered datasets.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
