    “Crecí observando a mis abuelas y a mi madre cortar hojas del “huerto” y usarlas de distintas maneras cuando ellas o alguien más de nuestra familia se enfermaba, mientras escuchaba a los vecinos y otras personas mayores hablar sobre las hojitas y hierbas que ellos mismos u otras personas habían probado para curar algún dolor o molestia, tanto leve como de gravedad. Estos episodios se presentaban con tanta frecuencia que llegaron a constituirse como una práctica naturalizada para mí. No obstante, al efectuar una revisión de ésta fui capaz de reflexionar sobre la importancia que tienen las plantas medicinales como recurso para la atención de la salud, al ser fáciles de conseguir y de bajo costo. El uso de las plantas medicinales es un tema que ha despertado el interés de diversas disciplinas, siendo la etnobotánica la principal. Las investigaciones etnobotánicas se han centrado en la documentación de la flora y los usos medicinales que los grupos humanos le otorgan en la actualidad, lo que ha dado como resultado una amplia bibliografía sobre el uso de plantas medicinales, en un tiempo y lugar específicos, que asume que el aprovechamiento de la flora como estrategia para la atención de la salud y la enfermedad ha sido el mismo desde la época prehispánica. No obstante, ciertos estudios realizados desde esta misma disciplina han reconocido que el uso de la flora con fines medicinales, así como los saberes construidos en torno a su aprovechamiento, son dinámicos, en la medida que tienden a perderse, crearse o reconfigurarse a lo largo del tiempo (Vázquez et al., 2019; Saynes et al., 2016). Como bien lo refiere Smith-Hall y sus colaboradores (2012), el cambio en los usos y saberes de las plantas puede ocurrir en un corto periodo de tiempo o gestarse en el transcurso de varias décadas”

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    “Los traslados de poblaciones tanto indígenas como españolas fueron un fenómeno frecuente en la Nueva España durante el período colonial, y presentan un abanico de causas, procedimientos y resultados tan amplio como la cobertura geográfica de los fenómenos. Pero en la historia temprana del virreinato destacó un amplio programa de movimientos de pueblos indígenas que respondió a un plan cabalmente trazado y altamente normado que pretendió hacerse extensivo a toda la geografía. Se trata de las denominadas por los investigadores Congregaciones civiles. Los estudios al respecto han arrojado múltiples factores que, con diferentes grados de éxito, motivaron los intentos de congregar o reunir a los pueblos dispersos: conveniencia para una evangelización más efectiva ante la dispersión de los naturales, creación de entidades políticas que garantizaran el “buen gobierno y policía” de los indígenas, facilitar un control más exhaustivo de la población debido a la gran baja demográfica sucedida para fines del siglo XVI y, en estrecha relación con esto último, optimizar el rendimiento económico de amplio espectro de los pueblos de indios. Esto es, las congregaciones se encaminaron a perfeccionar los cuatro ámbitos de control deseables por la corona –político, social, económico y religioso–. Las investigaciones hasta el momento llevadas a cabo han puesto mayor peso en uno u otro aspecto (lo cual será mostrado en el apartado antecedentes y desarrollo del problema). Pero, como muestra Luis Alberto Arrioja (2003), no se ha prestado demasiado interés a la ligadura histórica entre naturaleza y ser humano – incidiendo en los recursos naturales, el potencial económico, el cambio del paisaje cultural y la ordenación del territorio a partir de todo ello–, o por lo menos, no se ha hecho de manera profunda y sistemática”

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     CONGREGACIONES EN LA MIXTECA ALTA: EL CASO DE NOCHIXTLÁN, 1599-1603.

    La presente tesis tiene como objeto principal de estudio la congregación de pueblos que la corona trato de llevar a cabo a finales del siglo xvi en el pueblo de Nochixtlan, situado en el valle homónimo en la Mixteca Alta Oaxaqueña. La información acerca de este acontecimiento particular se encuentra recogida de manera parcial en un expediente que abarca los años de 1599 a 1603, y se resguarda en el ramo de tierras del Archivo General de la Nación, México D.F el cuerpo documental se acompaña de un mapa de la región aparentemente elaborado en las mismas fechas, el cual toma como centro el pueblo de Nochixtlan. Dicho mapa se extrajo del expediente y en la actualidad se conserva en la mapoteca del aún. En comparación con otros materiales de archivo del periodo colonial mexicano, los documentos pertenecientes a las congregaciones civiles no han sido trabajados con intensidad y se ha impedido de ese modo sacar a la luz la inestimable riqueza de los datos etnográficos y de otra índole que contienen. La información que encontramos no es exclusivamente de naturaleza política o económica, sino que se daban descripciones más o menos detalladas sobre el tipo de población, la topografía del terreno, el clima y la lengua de los habitantes. Es decir, estos documentos pueden ser utilizados como fuente de primer orden para la historia colonial más allá del aspecto de congregación por el que fueron elaborados. Es por ello que la justificación del estudio gira en torno a la necesidad de sumergirnos en los datos regionales que pudiéramos hallar en este y otros expedientes y documentos para aumentar en el conocimiento de las dinámicas más amplias que se generaron en la dialéctica general establecida entre el dominador y el dominado a finales del siglo XVI

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
