Pediatric Endocrinology Unit, Microcitemico Hospital, ASL Cagliari, Cagliari, Italy. OBJECTIVE: Insulin resistance (IR) increases during puberty in normal children. IR is the first adverse metabolic event of obesity, and the marker of the metabolic syndrome. We aimed to study the effect of puberty on IR in obese and normal-weight children. DESIGN: Cross-sectional evaluation of fasting glucose, insulin concentrations, and homeostasis model assessment of IR (HOMA-IR) in obese and control children throughout puberty. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We recruited 424 obese children (207 pre-pubertal and 217 pubertal divided in Tanner stages 2-3, 4, and 5) and estimated IR using the HOMA-IR index. Data were compared to those obtained in 123 healthy normal-weight children (40 pre-pubertal and 83 pubertal divided in Tanner stages 2-3, 4, and 5). RESULTS: In the obese children mean HOMA-IR increased progressively across Tanner stages, and was significantly higher in all groups (pre-pubertal and Tanner stages 2-3, 4, and 5) of obese than in control children. HOMA-IR was significantly correlated with BMI. CONCLUSIONS: HOMA-IR in obese children increases at puberty more than in normal-weight children and does not return to pre-pubertal values at the end of puberty. A note on a class of 4th order hyperbolic problems with weak and strong damping and superlinear source term

    No full text
In this paper we study a initial-boundary value problem for 4th order hyperbolic equations with weak and strong damping terms and superlinear source term. For blow-up solutions a lower bound of the blow-up time is derived. Then we extend the results to a class of equations where a positive power of gradient term is introduced

Decay in chemotaxis systems with a logistic term

    No full text
This paper is concerned with a general fully parabolic Keller-Segel system, defined in a convex bounded and smooth domain Ω of RN , for N ∈ {2, 3}, with coefficients depending on the chemical concentration, perturbed by a logistic source and endowed with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. For each space dimension, once a suitable energy function in terms of the solution is defined, we impose proper assumptions on the data and an exponential decay of such energies is established

    Treatment of Facet Joints

Lumbar zygapophysial joints are also called “facet joints” They are often cause of chronic back pain because of rich innervation of the articular structures. In 1933, Ghormley named the spectrum of symptoms arising from its pathological involvement as “facet joint syndrome” (FCS).FCS represents 15% of chronic pain in the lower back. It is characterized by joint pain which is usually insidious in its onset and which may derive from almost any structure in the zygapophysial joints (fibrous capsule, synovial membrane, hyaline cartilage, tendons, bone) due to mechanical or inflammatory stimulation of nociceptors. Standard treatments for pain in lumbar facet joints are mainly intra-articular injections of corticosteroids and radiofrequency denervation (RFD) of the medial branches which innervate the zygapophysial joint. We review here the anatomy and physiology of the lumbar zygapophysial joints as well as diagnostic tools and treatments

Lifespan for solutions to 4-th order hyperbolic systems with time dependent coefficients

    No full text
We study blow-up solutions of a nonlinear hyperbolic system of fourth order with time dependent coefficients under Dirichlet or Navier boundary conditions. We prove that under some restrictions on the data there exists a safe interval of existence of the solution and a lower bound of the lifespan is derived. The results are extended to a more general class of systems, where powers of the gradient of the solution are introduced. The proofs are based on some inequalities and coupled estimates techniques

Blow-up time estimates in nonlocal reaction-diffusion systems under various boundary conditions

    No full text
This paper deals with the question of blow-up of solutions to nonlocal reaction-diffusion systems under various boundary conditions. Specifically, conditions on data are introduced to avoid the blow-up of the solution, and when the blow-up occurs, explicit lower and upper bounds of blow-up time are derived

Nuovo Realismo / Postmodernismo.
