Carbides possessing excess carbon and porosity seem to be the best candidates as target for the production of exotic beams in the SPES-ISOL facility. In addition, the capability of tailoring properties such as grains size and pores size represents a step ahead to improve the ions release efficiency. In this work, multilayered graphene was used as source of carbon for the production of LaC and the main physical properties of the produced targets were compared to standard LaCx produced using micrometric graphite. The main output of the work consisted in the reduced total porosity (28.8 vol% vs 47.8 vol%) and increased shrinkage (20.4 vol% vs 5.8 vol%) of the LaCx-Graphene samples compared to LaCx-Graphite ones. This result showed how graphene can be successfully employed as sintering aid for the sintering of carbides. Further studies are ongoing with UO2 as starting reagent for carburization within the project AUL-2013-16-176 "Study of the use of graphene as source of carbon for Uranium Carbide-Graphene nanocomposites production" now under conclusion at the European Commission DG Joint Research Centre - JRC

Mutual regulation between serine and nitric oxide metabolism in human glioblastoma cells.

D-Serine indirectly caused dose- and time-dependent inhibition of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) without affecting endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in human glioblastoma cell line U87. Activity Of D-amino acid oxidase (DAAO), catalyzing the oxidative deamination of 14 D-amino acid, was enhanced by NO in a dose-dependent manner. Recently, we have reported that serine racemase (SR) is inhibited by NO and activated by D-serine through nitrosylation and denitrosylation, respectively [K. Shoji, S. Mariotto, A.R. Ciampa, H. Suzuki, Regulation of serine racemase activity by D-serine and nitric oxide in human glioblastoma cells, Neurosci. Lett., in press]. Thus, the metabolism of both D-serine and NO in U87 cells is functionally correlated in a complex manner. Suppression of NO production by D-serine in U87 cells contrasts its known action in enhancing nNOS in neurons. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved

The paper focuses on the figure of Mariotto Guiducci, a Florentine franciscan friar and abacus master from the 15th century, author of a mathematical treatise preserved in the National Library of Florence. By archival and bibliographical records, the case study may offer further insights about the topic, recently revived, on the relationship between Franciscanism and the mathematical sciences between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The article is divided in two parts: the first opens a glimpse into the Guiducci family and the teaching of practical mathematics in Florence and Prato, hinting at the convent life and experience of Mariotto; the second part is dedicated to the autograph codex and the Libro d’arismetricha, expression of a mathematical culture typical of the abacus tradition
