    Intervista a Cecilia Robustelli

    No full text
This interview provides a panorama of the institutional intiatives on the issue of gender and language in Italy since the creation of the Comitato nazionale di parità in 1983 and the publication of Alma Sabatini’s seminal study Il sessismo nella lingua italiana in 1987 to date. Robustelli argues that because of its ample scope including linguistic, cognitive, and cultural aspects, Sabatini’s work has not only raised the interest of feminist groups, but also gained scholarly and institutional attention. She claims that in the Italian context it has been necessary to highlight discriminatory language practices against women and promote non-stereotypical and non-sexist language uses. She also maintains that more time is necessary to translate a non-heteronormative framework into linguistic practices, although some progress has been made. She eventually gives information on current projects, studies, directives, and laws focusing on gender and language

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Metformin and cancer: Technical and clinical implications for FDG-PET imaging

    No full text
Metformin is the most widely used hypoglycemic agent. Besides its conventional indications, increasing evidence demonstrate a potential efficacy of this biguanide as an anticancer drug. Possible mechanisms of actions seem to be independent from its hypoglycemic effect and seem to involve the interference with key pathways in cellular proliferation and glycolysis. To date, many clinical trials implying the use of metformin in cancer treatment are on-going. The increasing use of (18)F-2-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) in cancer evaluation raises a number of questions about the possible interference of the biguanide on FDG distribution. In particular, the interferences exerted by metformin on AMP-activated protein kinase pathway (the cellular energy sensor), on insulin levels and on Hexokinase could potentially have repercussion on glucose handling and thus on FDG distribution. A better comprehension of the impact of metformin on FDG uptake is needed in order to optimize the use of PET in this setting. This evaluation would be useful to ameliorate scans interpretation in diabetic patients under chronic metformin treatment and to critically interpret images in the context of clinical trials. Furthermore, collecting prospective data in this setting would help to verify whether FDG-PET could be a valid tool to appreciate the anticancer effect of this new therapeutic approach

The TRIX index method was applied to historical data set of Senigallia Transect (Northern Adriatic Sea) to evaluate the eutrophication level in 3 stations characterised by different trophic conditions. Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen (DIN) and Dissolved Inorganic Phosphorus (DIP) were used and TRIX index showed a significant positive correlation with DIN. In 1994 the trophic front expanded up to 15 nM, in an area usually external to trophic coastal front, and we correlate this phenomenon with meteo-climatic conditions of the period.
